The basis of the words to this song are by Clarinda(Mrs Nancy McLehose) with whom Robert Burns became acquainted in December 1787, just about the time when he intended leaving Edinburgh for good; but, between the effect of her charm and a temporary lameness, caused by being knocked down by a drunken coachman, he remained in Edinburgh until the end of the following February. With the exception of one line, the first two verses of the song were written by Clarinda to Burns. The third and fourth verses were by Burns. The music was added less than 20 years ago.
