E' stata una partita più complicata del previsto per il numero 2 del mondo contro un avversario, numero 130 del mondo ma che fu numero 59 nel 2005, che è stato la più grande sorpresa del torneo: passato attraverso le qualificazioni ha poi battuto uno dopo l'altro Haas, Almagro e Davydenko, i primi due rimontando da due set a zero sotto, e oggi ha fatto soffrire l'ex re del tennis. Ma Federer si è limitato al minimo indispensabile, giocando bene i punti importanti, in particolare quelli del tie-break.
