TIM BARRUS: LEATHER LIT
from me on blip.tv (beta) July 08, 2008
I created Leather Lit as a publishing venture 20 years ago. Today, the question isn't -- can the "Leather Community" support a publishing entity -- the real question is: is there actually such a thing as a "Leather Community."I took Leather Lit when I left DRUMMER magazine and published GENOCIDE as a Leather Lit book at Knight's Press.Elizabeth Gershman asked me if I might be interested in becoming the publisher of that company.Me. A publisher. I was horrified at the notion. I positively loathe publishers and publishing. Publishers are crooks and scumbags. I was not ready then and I would not be ready now to sacrifice my entire life and being to ensuring that Leather Lit would make it as a line. The struggle just wouldn't interest me especially with a house that had enormous debt.I questioned then and I would question today whether a line of books that would appeal to a "Leather Community" wouldn't suffer the fate so many gay publishing ventures eventually face when they bite the dust. I have eaten enough dust for ten lifetimes and all of it fed to me by publishing. I am a person who is about many things. Illusions are not one of those things. -- Tim Barrus

Tim Barrus: Take Your Stupid Literary Awards and Shove Them
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 23, 2008
Literature is so utterly subjective as to what is and what is not the "Best" literature. But we humans love a party. So why not another awards show. For the most stupid editor who over lived. Or the most stupid agent who ever lived. Or the most stupid publisher who ever lived. Or the most obviously, transparently vapid publicist in her Manolo Blahniks who ever lied through her lizard's teeth to Oprah Winfrey -- an award for all of these cretins for the BEST in whatever the fuck it is they do.

Tim Barrus: I Want to Be In The Resistance
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 23, 2008
I Want To Be In The Resistance I want to be in the resistance. I want more than anything to resist. Resist what. Resist the Status Quo. Resist authority. The authority of you cannot do this. You cannot do that. You must market yourself to have any value whatsoever and to survive because we say so we say your survival depends on the box you will stay in. Mainly because you are not good enough and your doing these things would undermine our authority. It's about authority. It's about being controlled. I want to be in the resistance. I want to make them pay. I want to be against them. Against who. It has to be different for different people and different situations. For me, it was publishing. It was and it is the moral police. The We Know Everything There is to Know Bloggers and Writers Who Are Just Plain Wrong. But it serves their interests to be Entrenched. I was never good enough and they wanted me to go away. Until I became someone else. A secret identity and that is what pissed them off. That I would dare not bring them to the truth as they demand to see it. They loved me until they figured out who I was. Really was. Then they screamed for blood. Because it could not be true. How could they -- the people who never make a mistake -- mistake someone they hated for someone they loved. I would resist their rules, regulations, points of etiquette, and rituals. Never write to a critic. Never say no to any of their editorial requests that you give up your life. I would write to all of them. Every critic. Every editor. Every idiot with authority. I would resist. I want to be the kind of person who has secret meetings in dark places late at night deep in the woods where desperate men drink gin from flasks and talk about who lives who dies who is the traitor and how we might free our comrades from the prison where they have all been rounded up. I want to be the kind of person who would never talk no matter what torture they might employ. I will not do it. I will not confess to the truth you want to hear. You cannot beat it out of me. Cutting my balls off will get you nothing. I will resist. I will not name the names. I want to be the kind of resistance fighter who eludes them on the chase. I want to laugh as they loose the scent and eventually retreat to their barracks. I want to carry a knife and I want to be the kind of person who would not hesitate to cut their throats whenever possible.
