When I closed my eyes and pictured the greatest villain costumes in sci-fi movies, I was surprised how often hair -- and headpieces -- come into play. That makes sense for those of us who are not costume purists because we're thinking of the character as a whole, and in movies we're very often looking at close-ups of villains. We want to get up close and personal, to study the sneer, to examine the evil eyes, to absorb the dismissive scowl, to observe the raised eyebrows. Isn't it the whole package that sells a character as a villain? The actor makes all the difference in the world, no matter if he's buried under a ton of makeup or becomes nearly unrecognizable, but the costume plays an important role. In honor of all those who will sally forth this weekend in costumes that are good, bad, and ugly, we salute the designers of the top ten (plus a couple of bonus selections) greatest villain costumes in sci-fi movies, and the actors who wear them. The Emperor Ming (Flash Gordon) It takes a truly evil villain to pull off this particular outfit. Arrayed in varying shades of deep red and gold, Ming (the always game Max von Sydow) threatens to steal the show when those eyebrows are raised. Somehow Ming looks both sartorially forward-thinking -- what is that raised cowl doing back there except to frame his bald head -- and ridiculously, gloriously silly. This is a project based on the epic genius that is TERMINATOR 2. It is in no way trying to take credibility for how awesome the movie is it is purely a homage to how much we love it, a dedication to our appreciation of a masterpiece. This video was written & produced by DJ MAYHEM & features the polish & vocal skills of Mouthmaster Murf, both from the up & coming band THE ANOMALIES & DJ act THE FARCICAL 3. When setting out to make the follow up to the Amazing Robocop Rap Dj Mayhem had originally began work on an Amazing Aliens rap & got about a third of the way through completing it when the duo went on a tour with the Anomalies & ended up watching Terminator 1 & 2 in the back of the van during the journey. Overcome again with how spectacular the films were the decision was made put Aliens on hold & work on Terminator 2 immediately. Work began at the usual lacklustre pace & after about 3 months it was halfway done when disaster struck: The note book containing all of the lyrics for the terminator rap & the aliens rap was lost (presumably stolen by jealous rivals & not left somewhere by sheer stupidity). Mayhem fell into a deep depression, & searched for it for a month but when he couldnt find it he eventually had to start again when to his dismay he realised he couldnt remember hardly any of it. On a mission now he worked on it feverishly & completed the whole thing in 2 weeks. The rest as they say, is history (albeit, very recent history). This is not a very interesting story but a story none the less: You are now dumber having read it. KENDALL: I thought- I thought this was a joke. HANSEN: You thought what was a joke? KENDALL: I should have known better. HANSEN: What did you think it was? KENDALL: Truly- truly, a set up. HANSEN: And why would someone try to do a set-up like this? KENDALL: To catch people that shouldn't be talking to teenagers. HANSEN: People like you. KENDALL: Definitely.
