to the young, youth (195?/2008, 13 MB, 2:04 min) Poignant beautiful work from DVblog contributor Brian Gibson gently quirkily re-configuring footage shot by his late grandfather on a European visit in the 50s. Brian s work is always striking, always affecting, but the secret extra ingredient is the luminous intelligence underlying everything he does.

Sebastian Hernandez - DIY or Die #2 – Ladyfest

Ladyfest (2009, 46 MB, 4:39 min) Second in Sebastian Hernandez neat documentary series on DIY/alternative lifestyles. I like the genuine respect empathy Hernandez shows for his subjects, which doesn t, however, preclude honest three dimensional film-making. Once again Hernandez technical skills are evident (But not in a look at me! kind of way) In particular I love the jumpy camera work/edit in the second interview, which manages to be aesthetically pleasing without detracting from the actual substance of the interview indeed it adds to it.) Looking forward very much to seeing the third!

Kissin (2009, 29 MB, 2:11 min) Doing what it says on the tin (unless you were anticipating a Russian concert pianist), a vid both charming solidly made from Shawn Kornhauser Nick Sullivan which somehow transcends its premise - A Video About Being Young , which it clearly is, but it feels like they ve captured more this has something to do with the subtle, but nonetheless crucial, use of sound which really opens the whole thing out.

Gas Zappers by Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung

Gas Zappers (2007, 61 MB, 5:45 min) “My friend Gemma advises me to create a video in order to design the game characters and figure out how the game should go so I did it. The video is done and I would love to show it to all of you guys but it all of a sudden got in the 2008 Sundance Film Festival so unfortunately I cannot show you now due to the contract. Please wait a bit. Synopsis Gas Zappers is a short animation about climate change. The main character, the ironically overappropriated and fuzzy polar bear, abruptly finds itself in a position to save its home living environment through dextrous maneuvers in an Al-e Gore-ical world. The idiom of the video game is exploited to challenge and illuminate the simplistic notion of quick fixes to environmental issues. Aesthetically, graphical and musical styles from the glory days of video games conjure the triumph and delight of virtual success. As the bear progresses with celebrity companions through different climate change scenarios such as Venice underwater, confrontations with bulldozers, and anthropomorphized killer oil derricks, it narrowly succeeds each time thanks to its renewable energy defenses. A narrative unfolds that, like the artists’ previous works, waggishly interrogates the spectacular mode of ecological policy. By Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung. Music by Noah Vawter.
