The Boy They Called "Bus Head"
from Indybay newswire (audio) July 12, 2008
When he was housed at the state prison in Pittsburgh, he participated in the Scared Straight program, and spoke to young people coming into the prison, deeply impressing upon them the emptiness and loss of imprisonment. He did all he could to convince them to avoid this fate. Bushead was 50 years old. He lived from the streets to the prison, a high octane, high energy, high volume life. His illness, which led to his long and tortuous suffering, was utterly debilitating. Hi memory among many prisoners, will evoke smiles, and hearty laughter, despite the manner of his passing.

The Crimes of Kings
from Indybay newswire (audio) June 28, 2008
Centuries after a revolution, in the name of democracy , and it's still 'the king can do no wrong.' Or as Richard Nixon put it, "When the President does it, that makes it legal." Clearly, if George W. Bush has studied anything, it's Nixon. From secret prisons to legalized torture; from renditions abroad to wiretaps at home; from illegal wars to ruinous occupations, crimes - as in violations of both U.S. and International laws - have become presidential prerogatives.

Is Obama's Victory Ours?
from Indybay newswire (audio) June 11, 2008
With the nation's manufacturing base also a thing of history, amidst the socioeconomic wreckage of globalization, with foreign affairs in shambles, the rulers reach for a pretty, brown face to front for the Empire. 'Real change that you could believe in' would be an end to Empire, and an end to wars for corporate greed, not just a change of the shade of the political managers. That change, I'm afraid, is still to come.

Plan Mexico threatens peaceful Mexican communities
from Indybay newswire (video) June 08, 2008
Plan Mexico, officially called the Merida Initiative, is a $1.4 billion U.S. aid package to Mexico in order to "fight drugs." Mexico's law enforcement is extremely corrupt; its members consume the drugs themselves and commit hundreds of human rights violations with impunity. This video shows a peaceful community in southern Mexico that was recently invaded and threatened by Mexican law enforcement, shortly after the U.S. House voted to approve Plan Mexico. Our tax dollars would be spent on these kinds of abuses. It's important to urge the Senate to stop this initiative.

from Indybay newswire (audio) June 02, 2008
William 'Billy' Tilley has been on Pennsylvania's Death Row for a lifetime. For much of that time he worked as a librarian, insuring that hundreds of men received weekly reading materials. He seemed to enjoy his job, and performed it in an efficient and upbeat manner. On early Tuesday, May 27, 2008, around 6:30 am, his long shift on Death Row came to an end. For it was then that Tilley was found, hanging in his cell.

When The State Attacks: (FLDS Raid)
from Indybay newswire (audio) May 31, 2008
The El Dorado raid, which resulted in the state's seizure of some 450 children... revealed how the State can isolate and attack those seen as different, with the support of the corporate media. While I'm no fan of polygamy, and definitely oppose the sexual abuse of anybody, I don't recall any kind of similar raids on Catholic churches or parish houses, where the abuse of kids happened for generations, and was, if anything, an open secret.

The Politics of Ignorance & Fear
from Indybay newswire (audio) May 22, 2008
Politics is often seen and interpreted as, well, 'the will of the people.' It is often described in lofty judicial decisions and thick political science texts as democracy in action--the People choosing their Government, and ultimately, the American 'way of life.' Yet, how much is simply unbridled ignorance? How much is simply blind racial hatred? How much is just plain silliness?

Philadelphia: City of Brotherly Thugs
from Indybay newswire (audio) May 14, 2008
The scene is as common as sunlight: cops beating Black men in the streets. This time, captured on videotape from a hovering helicopter, a malevolent swarm of cops pull occupants from a car, and then proceed to beat the paste out of the men, kicking, punching, and slamming with a club. At least 15 cops are seen in the broadcast beatdown; an average of 5 to 1.... If ever there was irony, the three car occupants were charged with aggravated assault, and criminal conspiracy. How much do you wanna bet that the cops, who were caught on film in the midst of aggravated assault, and as they committed the crime in common, criminal conspiracy, are never charged with these crimes -- and probably will never be arrested?

Sean Bell's Second Slaying
from Indybay newswire (audio) May 07, 2008
The defense utilized the "bad company" argument: that Bell was shot and killed because he was among "the wrong crowd." That such an argument swayed Supreme Court justice Arthur Cooperman (in New York state, unlike most other states, the trial court is termed the Supreme Court, and the state's highest court is their Court of Appeals.) is a measure of how devalued Black life is, and how easy Black men are to demonize and disparage.

MARCH TO I.C.E -- Immigration Rights Coalition
from Indybay newswire (video) May 05, 2008
On Friday, May 2nd - the day after thousands of Bay Area residents marched for immigrants' rights - immigration agents conducted a large-scale raid at taquerias across San Francisco and the East Bay. Agents arrested about 60 employees at several locations of the El Balazo chain. Some of the workers have been released, but forced to wear electronic ankle bracelets while they await deportation hearings. Others are still imprisoned. Many were interrogated without legal representation. ICE claims that it targets those involved in criminal activity and doesn't do random enforcement. But most of the Balazo employees had no criminal records. They were arrested for the crime of working to support their families. Four-minute QT movie. 54MB.
