Author: MediaEngine Added: Sun, 31 Aug 2008 00:35:24 -0800 Duration: 121Harry (Academy Award winner Chris Cooper, Best Supporting Actor, 2002, ADAPTATION) and Pat (Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson, 2003, Best Supporting Actress, PIECES OF APRIL) have a nice, respectable marriage. But when Harry falls in love with a beautiful young lady, he decides he must kill his wife, because divorce would cause her too much pain. Richard (Pierce Brosnan) is Harry's caddish best friend who realizes he must have Harry's lovely mistress (Rachael McAdams) for himself. Love and friendship are contemplated with noir-style suspense and wry humor in this sly comedy that reveals there's nothing quite as devastating, or as divine, as married life.

Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, Romance, Universal, Theatrical Reviews I'm slightly mistrustful of titles that include exclamation points. They always remind me of the musical version of The Elephant Man, Elephant!, in The Tall Guy ("... there's an angel with big eeears..."). But in the case of Mamma Mia!, I'm actually surprised the title only included one exclamation point -- you can imagine the filmmakers or the creators of the stage version embracing even more emphatic punctuation, just to let you know that This! Is a Musical! And also Wacky!! As if chorus lines of men in flippers, Meryl Streep waving a feather boa, and enough ABBA music to sate the leads of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert wouldn't have clued you in. The movie, like the stage musical it's adapted from, is essentially and unabashedly an extended gimmick -- an excuse to sing and perform songs that originated from the Swedish musical group ABBA. Characters spontaneously burst into song not because they're aspiring performers (Chicago), or because their singing is meant as a melodious soliloquy (Sweeney Todd), but because the situation or their emotional state reminds them of an ABBA song (sometimes more tangentially than others), and they decide to share it with everyone. I've had friends like this in real life, although that seems to have been a college-age thing.Continue reading Review: Mamma Mia! Permalink | Email this | Comments
Danny DeVito Going Back Behind the CameraDanny DeVito Going Back Behind the Camera
from Cinematical
July 16, 2008

Filed under: Comedy, Casting, Deals, Family Films, Newsstand I have a soft spot for nearly everything Danny DeVito's directed. Death to Smoochy was a waste of a cast and a concept, but most everything else -- The War of the Roses, Matilda, and yes, even the underrated Duplex (I haven't seen Throw Momma from the Train in forever, but toss that one in too) -- has a dark, unforgiving sensibility that I really appreciate. For one thing, I'm pretty sure that DeVito is the only filmmaker to truly get what Roald Dahl was all about. DeVito's next directing project, and his first for the big screen since Duplex flopped in 2003, will be an adaptation of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, a young adult book by a dude named Avi (yes, just Avi). It's about a 13 year-old girl who's crossing the Atlantic on her own in 1832 and gets caught in the middle of a mutiny. Saoirse Ronan, Morgan Freeman and Pierce Brosnan are attached to star. The funny thing is, I read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle at some point while traversing the middle school netherworld back in the mid-to-late 90's, but I'll be damned if I remember a single thing about it. (The plot does sound vaguely familiar. I think there might be a parrot involved, but I'm not sure.) To Kill a Mockingbird it ain't. But if DeVito (who also wrote the screenplay) can give it some character, I'm down. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Drama, Casting, Mystery & Suspense It was just last year that Christopher brought us the news that Roman Polanski had selected Richard Harris' novel, The Ghost, as his next big film project. So even though it took some time to get name actors to sign on the dotted line, the wait is over now that MTV reports that Pierce Brosnan and Nicolas Cage will star in the political drama. Ghost is the story of a writer hired to complete an autobiography of a soon-to-be ex-Prime Minister (with Brosnan playing the PM, and Cage as the writer). Through the course of the interviews, the ghostwriter uncovers some troubling secrets from the Minister's past that put our writer friend in some high-stakes danger. Rumor has it the original idea for the book was loosely based on former PM Tony Blair, but I would assume that any similarities were kept well in the realm of fiction.Continue reading Pierce Brosnan and Nicolas Cage Sign for Polanski's 'The Ghost' Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Solve All Of Your Problems With This Ancient Chinese SecretSolve All Of Your Problems With This Ancient Chinese Secret
from Bigg Success
February 26, 2008

Today we ll share a timeless principle for solving all of your problems that s amazingly simple. But first, let s discuss three ways that DON T solve problems. Ignore it and hope it will go away. Some people get overwhelmed by an abundance of problems. They don t know where to begin solving them so they just don t begin solving them. Result: The problems usually just get bigger and bigger. Use a knee-jerk reaction. Other people just jump to a solution. They don t aim; they just fire. It may or may not be the right solution, but it doesn t matter they ve got it off their plate. Result: They may end up with a bigger, more complex problem down-the-road. Approach it willy-nilly. Still other people have no problem-solving process. They try a little of this and little of that. They don t have any order so they don t approach their most pressing problems in an orderly way. Result: The problems just keep piling up. Noble endeavors James Clavell wrote a great novel called Noble House. It inspired a mini-series in which Pierce Brosnan played the CEO of Struan s. Struan s was the Noble House, the most prestigious trading firm in Hong Kong. He inherited a number of problems from his predecessor. Now, he has a severe shortage of cash. He s overextended with his bank. His stock price is falling rapidly. He faces a raid on his company by an American businessman, who has inside information. His Hong Kong rival is trying to bury him. The founder of Struan s had made a promise to the locals that he must fulfill. His world is crashing in around him! It seems that everybody wants something from him. Yet few are willing to give him any help. In the end, he managed to overcome all the odds and Struan s remained the Noble House. How did he do it? By looking at his problems the Chinese way. It s a simple, two-step process to solve all of your problems: Put all of your problems into their individual compartments. Picture yourself at your bank. You re in the safe deposit area. You see box after box after box. Take each problem and put it in its own box. You may group similar problems together, but each one should have its very own box. That will be very important for the second step. Put them away to de-clutter your mind. Because if you try to solve all of them, you end up solving none of them. So this first step is very important! Not to mention, there are new problems surfacing all the time. Just keep putting them away so you re ready for the second step. Pull one problem out at a time when, and only when, you re ready and able to deal with it. Sounds simple, doesn t it? But how do you determine what problem to pull out? It s a matter of timing do you have the resources available? Do you have the time, the money, and any other required resources? If not, keep it tucked away. So when you open up the compartment, do you keep it open until it s completely solved? Not necessarily! You may pull it out, do as much as you can and then put it back and pull out another one. Keep repeating until all your problems are solved! A lot of people never look at their problems this way. There s a real calming effect when you do, because you don t have all of your problems staring at you all at once! Just click the Share This button below to pass this ancient problem-solving secret on to a friend. You ll be a hit if you do! But Shhhh it s still a secret! Next week, we ll expand on this subject by sharing a problem-solving process we call SOLVE IT. For our bigg quote today, we thought it only appropriate to consult with Confucius, who said, Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. Even when complications arise, keep it simple and SOLVE IT! Next time, we ll offer some advice that s not for the faint-of-heart. Consider yourself warned! We ll discuss a common perception that keeps many people from succeeding bigg! Until then, here s to your bigg success!
