Paul Backers married Oona Marie Houston on July 12, 2008. The event took place at the beautiful Monarch in Capitola overlooking Monterey Bay. Ric Masten's let it be a dance and a Western Tiger Swallowtail were highlights to the event. This video contains stills from Tom Houston, Michael Houston, Jerry Houston, Lorena Houston, and remarkable action shots by Sun Hee Lee. Arts 2008 at Andy Ausonio Library, Castroville

The Arts Council for Monterey County partnered with the Friends of the Castroville Library and the Free Libraries of Monterey County to sponsor a community art class by Jose Ortiz for people of all ages at the Andy Ausonio Library. The paintings are charming. This video features explanations of who the partnership developed by Nancy Ausonio, Supervisor Louis Calcagno, Richard Anderson, and Shirley Dawson. Traditional Mexican harp music played live by William Faulkner is featured in this ten minute video is featured. Michael Houston shot the video and Picture America.org provided production services.

2008 Robert Campbell Monterey High School Poetry Awards

Each year the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts and the Monterey Public Library present the Robert Campbell Bilingual High School Poetry Awards. This year over 250 students throughout Monterey County entered the competition to write winning poems in English or Spanish. Jean McCombs of the Monterey Public Library welcomes the participants. Robert Reese and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts act as MCs. Barbara Mossberg of California State University Monterey Bay gives the keynote reading. Teachers participating include Jackie Ambrose, Gonzales High School; Dale DePalartis and Barbara Stienberg, Carmel High; Nancy Hunt and Simon Hunt and Gerry Kapolka of Santa Catalina School; Jack Krell of Siver Star Center; Christian Lamonea, Wellington Smith School; Lynn Larsen and Jan Pratt , Pacific Grove High School; Katie Leikam, Boronda Community School; Vournee Nolte and Genievieve Phillips, King City High School; Cheryl Smeltl , North Monterey County High School; Lois Van Buren, North Salinas High School. The program was filmed by Michael Houston and edited by Michael T. Houston of Monterey High. Picture America.org provided production services. The Arts Council joined the ATT ProAm, The Ralph Knox Foundation, the Community Foundation for Monterey County, Volunteer Services of Monterey County, The Pebble Beach Company Foundation, The Yellow Brick Road Benefit Store, and the Roberson Jeffers To House to sponsor the event.

Poetry Out Loud Monterey County

Poetry Out Loud has come to Monterey County with the sponsorship of the Arts Council for Monterey County, California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Garland Thomas, Poet Laureate of Pacific Grove and West Coast Slam organizer coordinated the event at the National Steinbeck Center with students from North Salinas and Gonzalez High students taking the gold, silver, and bronze. Next year will be even bigger. Recitation and performance are major new trends in poetry. There has been a recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music. Video by Michael Houston. Music by Jay Tolagson. SALINAS CHILDREN - THINKING THROUGH ART was a featured exhibit at the National Steinbeck Center in SalinasMarch 7 - 31, 2008 Presented by the Arts Council for Monterey County, In the video Linda Pedrazzini Hevern explains the importance of the project to the Board of the Arts Council for Monterey County. This exhibition shows artwork from three projects supported by the Arts Council for Monterey County and taught/ facilitated by Kira Carrillo Corser and Linda Pedrazzini Hevern. It represents pro-active methods of improving the health, education and safety of Monterey County s communities, beginning with East Salinas. The three projects featured include: The Migrant Ed Art Institute, ASES Program Art Classes, and East Salinas COmmunity Group with Poder Popular. Michael Houston shot the video and stills. Music was provided by Jay Tolanson. Video services were provided by John Longenecker and Picture America.org.
