Virtual Maestro... and a Robot Maestro (Soundcheck: Friday, 16 May 2008) from WNYC's Soundcheck on May 16, 2008 0 views
If you’ve ever dreamed of leading an orchestra on stage, there's a new video game to satisfy your urge. The UBS Virtual Maestro allows would-be Leonard Bernsteins to lead their own "virtual orchestra" via an electronic Wii controller. As the game currently tours concert halls across the U.S., we hear from one of its developers, Yuri Ivanov. And there's another reason for conductors to be concerned for their job security: On Tuesday night, Asimo, a 4-foot-3-inch Hondo robot led the Detroit Symphony in a performance of "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha." Detroit Free Press music critic Mark Stryker tells us about it. Our blog: John Schaefer on "toying" with musical skills Tell us: Are music simulators good or bad for music? Can they spark new interest, or do they "cheapen" the study of music?

MOON CRASH by Claudia Tomaz and Kevin Walsh from DVblog on May 16, 2008 3 views
MOON CRASH (2008, 58 MB, 4:42 min.) MOON CRASH is a 360 degree immersive experience using DJ sets and mutant slides, painted live with video projections. All visuals are painted on acetate using slide mounts, vitrail glass paint and drops of water. The paints are solvent based and don’t mix with the water; the water creates a vacuum which permits the movement. Each time the slides are projected they form a unique landscape. The slides also react to the heat of the projector. These slides have a short life as the water tends to evaporate and the slides to dry. The slides are painted, projected, filmed and manipulated live mixed with pre-edited materials. *Proposal for a Rhizome.org commission.

EP158: Who’s Afraid of Wolf 359? from Escape Pod on May 15, 2008 6 views
2008 Hugo Nominee! By Ken MacLeod. Read by Stephen Eley. First appeared in The New Space Opera, ed. Gardner Dozois re as old as I am, you ll find your memory s not what it was. It s not that you lose memories. That hasn t happened to me or anyone else since the Paleocosmic Era, the Old Space Age, when people lived in caves on the Moon. My trouble is that I ve gained memories, and I don t know which of them are real. I was very casual about memory storage back then, I seem to recall. This could happen to you too, if you re not careful. So be warned. Do as I say, not as I did. Some of the tales about me contradict each other, or couldn t possibly have happened, because that s how I told them in the first place. Others I blame on the writers and tellers. They make things up. I ve never done that. If I ve told stories that couldn t be true, it s because that s how I remember them. Here s one. Rated R. Contains profanity, nudity, and in flagrante delicto. Audible.com Promotion!
