I met Lori and her daughter Savanna while visiting a rotating shelter in Detroit, Michigan. I cannot imagine the challenges of raising a child without permanent housing. Yet children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. According to data collected on night in January 2007 50% of homeless populations are families and children in a given year. 13% of families are homeless due to domestic violence. 39% of the homeless people are children under 18 (5% are unaccompanied youth) Researchers estimate that between 4-7% of youth will experience homelessness before their 18th birthday. Homelessness takes a toll on young children. For example, a child who has experienced homelessness experiences post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at twice the rate of returning war veterans. Lori hopes for a better future. One where she can provide for Savanna - she says, live a good life like everybody else . My name is Lana and I am 6 years old. My Mom taught me that even when something bad happens, you can try to make the best of it and good things may come from it that you can be grateful for later. I am thankful for my life, and everyday, I try to make the best of it!

Eshte nje shkodran i vertete. E quajne Agron dhe ka jetuar perjetesisht ne qytetin e vjeter. Ai nuk e mesoi dot kurre te verteten e ardhjes se gjysherve te tij ne Shqiperi gjate komunizmit. U rrit i vetem dhe i izoluar, ne nje bote ku ngjyra e lekures e bente shume te ndryshem. Jam dalluar prej te tjeterve. Kjo ishte edhe mire dhe keq per mua. Si race tjeter njeri nuk kam pas pervec gruas dhe femijeve. Me ka ndihmuar shume shoqeria, me ka afruar, shprehet Agroni. Per shkak te vecantise dhe habise qe shkakton ngjyra e afrikano-shkodranit, ne qytetin e tij nuk ka njeri qe se njeh. Megjithate, ai e ka te pamundur te thyeje paragjykimet mbi veten. Ndihem i diskriminuar. Kur shkoj te kerkoj pune, thone: ce duam kete te zi. Edhe ne komunizem por edhe sot nuk e shikoj veten kaq mire. Gjithmone jane njerezit qe shmangen per ngjyren time duke mos me marre ne pune, thote ai. Ka vetem nje gje per te cilen Agroni mburret e krenohet. Familja. Ai e kaloi rinine ne nje epoke kur njerezit i luftonin paragjykimet seriozisht dhe kjo i dhuroi atij dashurine e bashkeshortes se ardhshme, Safetes, teksa ishte thjesht djaloshi qe punonte si shofer prane ndermarrjes se saj. Kam hyre ne pune e re. Aty na lindi dashuria, por prinderit nuk me degjuan atehere dhe u detyrova te largohem nga shtepia. Agroni ishte njeri shume i mire, pohon Safetja. Cifti do te trashegohet gjate marteses me plot 6 vajza, sot te gjitha te martuara, me perjashtim te Mireles, e vogla e shtepise. Agroni ka qene gjithnje tipi i neshtruar i njerut, i cili pranon fatin dhe gjen kurajon per te bashkejetuar mes botes se te ndryshmeve. Ai ka qene nje shofer i dalluar ne rini, jo vetem per shkak te tipareve, por edhe zellit ne pune. Ky njeri e ka vecuar gjithnje veten prej te tjereve, megjithate ne Shkoder te njohurit e tij e ndajne pershtypje te jshtezakonshme. Agroni eshte ndjere gjithmone i vecuar dhe shume i ndryshem. Edhe sot qe mosha e trete e ka zene ne te njejtin qytet, ai ecen rruges duke mbajtur mbi supe peshen e qindra syve qe e shenjestrojne.

Growing up in Lake Benton, MN, it was my job to shovel the driveway. Dad and I would work in the yard and then come in to warm up. This sketch is of me leaning on my snow shovel in dad's office watching him study. We had some great conversations then and I'm thankful for the memories. I should probably give some additional backstory. Two years ago my dad had a stroke and lost the ability to communicate through speech. He recently had a fall and was in the hospital in MN. My family and I went up there to be close to him and this was drawn while sitting with him in the hospital. Since we can't visit, this is a way for us to connect. I sketch and talk about what I remember while he watches. There are a few phrases he can speak but not enough to carry on conversation. Thus, the memories of our conversations are a big deal for me. He's a wise man, my hero, and had perhaps the most profoundly hilarious sense of humor I've ever known. Though he's still with me, I miss him. Thanks for reading and watching.
