June, 2006Averill Park, NY Contact: Reed Dunlea, redunlea@vassar.eduCreated by Hudson Mohawk Independent Media Center, www.hmIMC.org---------- Student protest to target military Averill Park groups that oppose recruiters on campus plan rally By DANIELLE T. FURFARO, Albany (NY) Times Union Staff writer June 8, 2005 SAND LAKE -- Military recruiters on campus make Reed Dunlea and some of his fellow Averill Park High School students uncomfortable. "We don't want our classmates to be manipulated into signing up for the military and then dying for it," said Dunlea, 17, a senior. After spending months trying to persuade the school's administration to kick military recruiters off campus, three student groups organized a protest at the school's dismissal time today. Dunlea said he expects about 100 students, from his and other schools. Superintendent Michael Johnson recently asked recruiters to stop using the cafeteria and restricted them to the guidance office, auditorium and an instruction room. "I rethought that and decided to do the same thing with them that we do with the college recruiters. ... I didn't want them to have a captive audience." Under the rules of the No Child Left Behind Act, schools are required to give military recruiters the same access to students as colleges or employers or risk losing federal funding. But the rally sponsors -- the Averill Park Students Against War, the Averill Park High School Gay Straight Alliance and 51%: A Feminist Organization -- said they believe they have legal standing to bar the recruiters. They say the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which requires gay military personnel to hide their sexual orientation, discriminates and is a reason to ban recruiters from campus. "If an employer wanted to come in and recruit and they didn't hire black people, they would not be allowed in the school," Dunlea said. Military recruiters said they were upset to hear of the planned protest, but they would leave the school if they are told to. "If they want to keep the military out, we would have to stand behind that," said Doug Ream, public affairs officer for the Navy's Buffalo recruiting district, which includes the Capital Region. Dunlea said the groups tried to persuade Johnson to require recruiters to sign a waiver saying that they don't discriminate. But Johnson balked at that. "I don't intend to get in the middle of a lawsuit," he said. "The kids have the right to their personal points of view. But, at the same time, the military has rights to our school."
