University of Salford, UK. 11th September 2005. A one day Conference Against International Terrorism takes place. The conference begins with two minutes silence in memory of all victims of terror whether it be perpetrated by Al Qaeda or Western-sponsored state terrorism. The conference takes place on the thirty second anniversary of the 1973 CIA-backed military coup in Chile and the fourth anniversary of the 9-11 attack on Wall Street and the Pentagon. This page displays a video clip of Mark Curtis speaking at the conference. Curtis is a former Research Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and was until recently Director of the World Development Movement. He has worked in the field of international development for the past 12 years, including as Head of Policy at the non-governmental organisations, Christian Aid and ActionAid. Curtis is the author of several important books about the hyprocrisy and deceit of the British Establishment. These include Unpeople: Britain's Secret Human Rights Abuses and Web of Deceit: Britain's Real Role in the World. His speech further exposes the hypocrisy of Western governments over the issue of terrorism and presents a potted history of assassinations of progressive Third World leaders carried out by British agents. Due to its high elevation, Zambia has a mild tropical climate. The weather is so pleasant that is has been nicknamed "The air-conditioned state". Almost one-third of the country is given over to national parks and game reserves, which is home to some of the most abundant animal populations in Africa including big game animals. The major draw to Zambia is the astonishing Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, dropping over 330 ft below. Zambia is one of the more politically stable countries in Southern Africa with potential to be one of the richest countries on the continent. Today, Zambia is one of the world's poorest and indebted nations with a steady influx of refugees, the effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty and corruption, and food shortages that leaves the country in crisis. In Zambia there are 75,000 children who are homeless orphans, many affected by HIV/AIDS. At least 50 per cent of Zambia's populations are expected to die of HIV related diseases in the next three years. Life expectancy is Zambia is only 32.5 years.Thousands of children in Zambia live in a land where extreme poverty is the norm, many children are orphaned by AIDS, health care is woefully inadequate and public education is substandard and not free. One thing is clear. Children such as these need our help.
