My second major project, this time it's a boxing vid profiling four fighters (Muhammad Ali, Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones Jr and Floyd Mayweather) with that unique, inimitable talent that comes along once in a generation or so. This vid was a lot harder than anything I'd worked on so far for a couple of reasons. For starters, while I had things almost entirely planned out beforehand with my other stuff, I went through ideas like crazy on this one with everything from the fighters to use, (some others that were considered: Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Meldrick Taylor, Mike Tyson, etc) to how to present them, and so on and so forth. Secondly, before I'd only worked with one video source, and this time I was pulling footage from dozens of other tribute videos (links to the major ones I used are at the bottom of this) and fights. It made for a lot of work in editing. Even then I found myself wishing I'd gotten more video to work with by the end, especially with Mayweather. Lastly, I had serious technical problems throughout the process, but my stubbornness to gets things done turned out to be greater than my computer's to screw it all up. A quick blurb on each fighter: Muhammad Ali needs no introduction. Probably the greatest heavyweight of all time and one of the greatest fighters of all time, (although not the greatest, Sugar Ray Robinson holds that honor), a gold medalist, a 3 time heavyweight champion, one of the most complete fighters in history. (Speed, footwork, power, heart, toughness, good chin, you name it). He was probably the easiest to work with because I'm a major fan of the man and know his footage inside and out. Also, I was able to steal almost all the footage sued from Sitiyzal's great tributes to him. Pernell "Sweat Pea" Whitaker may be the greatest defensive boxer of all time, with the possible exception of Willie Pep. (Pep isn't much remembered these days, but had a career record of 230-11-1, and once won a round without throwing a single punch. He was just that good). Also a gold medalist and a champion in four weight divisions, Whitaker was amazing to watch, not just for his defensive abilities but for his showboating which he'd do by doing things like jumping up and smacking someone with his gloves or pulling down a boxer's trunks, like he did to Roger Mayweather. His defense was so good, it could make legends like Azumah Nelson and Julio Cesar Chavez look ordinary. According to some reports Whitaker could be an ass outside of the ring, and he screwed up both himself and his late career with drug addictions, but his recent induction into the boxing Hall of Fame was richly deserved. Roy Jones Jr certainly has a style all his own. A flashy mix of speed, power, and the flat out weird, (like when he'll start dancing in the middle of his moves, or imitating one of his fighting roosters), characterized Jones' style. All but impossible to hit until the end of his career, (when it turned out he had a bit of a glass jaw) Roy used to be right there in the debates about whether he deserved a shot at being considered the greatest fighter of all time (or at least in the top 10 or so) until his career started coming apart after he moved up to heavyweight and added that title to his list of accomplishments. Floyd Mayweather is, like Jones, incredibly elusive, although he prefers deflecting blows with shoulder rolls or catching them on his arms to outright dodging like Jones does. His punches are also unbelievably fast and accurate, and combined with his elusiveness it has led to some of the most lopsided punch counts in history, with there being multiple fights in which opponents have scored 5 hits or less per round on him. Mayweather has been talking a lot about early retirement, and if he does we may never know just how good he is, although what we've already seen is impressive. Hopefully he'll show us more before he goes for good, although, like all boxers, hopefully he'll know to stop before he gets hurt. Eugene Skeef is joined by his creative colleagues Clive Sithole, Vimmi Vatish and Adam Barker in a morning rhythmic meditation in preparation for a workshop with local school children. The workshop was part of a project called How Do Udu, which is part of Eugene's international udu project. Clive, who is a potter, travelled from South Africa to Kent, England to join Eugene to make udus with the young people.
