I have been on parental leave from April 1st to end of September. My wife and I wanted to be with our daughter for more than one year. So we decided to prolong our parental leave by taking out minimum benefits. The options are that one can take out 7 days in a week, 5 days or only even less if you can afford it.This is very expensive so one has to choose to live poor for some months and be with your kid or take your kid. The social welfare system is otherwise designed so children can be institutionalized as early as 1 year from the time of birth. The Swedish native men tend to be better when it comes to utilizing their parental leave while men of other origins than Swedish mostly ignore their parental leave. In Sweden, parents divide parental leave equally. The mother takes 6 months as well as the father. Because of the family economy, many families tend to let the mother stay at home more than the father in the situation where the mother earns less than the father. Although Sweden is a modern country, women still earn about 80% of men s salary. Gender sensitivity and equality is though changing this situation drastically. Workers union and other tools like the Ombudsman helps in eliminating discrimination of this kind.A typical scenario is when a men, chooses not to stay at home with their kids instead the fathers transfer 4 moths of their leave to the mother. Sweden issues the most generous family policies in the whole world although the politics of the Right are gradually breaking down these programmes. These policies were introduced so that young couples can combine both family life and career.The family policy dictates that one parent takes out at least 2 of her or his parental leave if he or she decides to transfer the rest to the other parent. These 2 months are compulsory otherwise they would be frozen by the state. The 2 months must be utilized before the baby turns 8 years old. Naturally, mothers are forced to stay at home at least, for the first months from the time of delivery.For me, it is very important to benefit from this policy. It gives me the opportunity to be the change, to learn what it is to be a child care taker, to develop the connection with my daughter and give her the opportunity to learn who her father is. During this period, I also learn patience and child psychology. I get the chance to teach my daughter my mother tongue. This gives me hope for the survival of a modern Maasai tribe.
