Stallions are a different creature than geldings or mares, and this boy is just 3 yrs old. When driving, I keep contact with his mouth. This is all new for me, because I have a Western Pleasure background, wherein you never want the horse's mouth to touch or be heavy on your hands. He is inconsistent at quite a few things due to being still fairly new to the cart (or it may be because I am not a trainer, per se). For example, watch his stops. He will still resist the bit every now and then. Also, when I really drive him into an extended trot, he still breaks gait once in a while and picks up a lope. This should all become consistent over time. He has a very nice head set and is a willing learner. There is no tail switching or bad attitude about work. If he has been worked a while, he is not fidgety when standing, but if he is fresh, he wants to go. When standing, he likes to rub his face on the shafts and needs correction there. This video was taken on very bumpy, rough ground. I will retape him out on smooth ground, but the irrigation water was in the pasture and I wanted to take advantage of a cool morning in Phoenix (90 degrees at 8:30 AM is cool. )
