Derrick Jensen presents us with the problem, anticipates all of our rationalizations and evasions, destroys them with brutal clarity and compassion, and then calls us to action. I'm struck by his use of the term 'horizontal hostility, which means our habit of attacking those who should be our allies. I've long recognized this as a problem, but stated it (far less succinctly) like this: Two right wingers meet and find they disagree on nine issues out of ten. They then form a coalition and get to work on their common ground. Two left wingers meet and find they agree on nine issues out of ten. They then proceed to tear each other apart over that one issue, and part mortal enemies. I'm exaggerating, but in essence isn't that the way it so often goes? I wish I knew what it is about progressives, radicals, and otherwise intelligent, caring people that makes them so dysfunctional. Maybe their higher awareness of the issues makes them feel alienated and estranged, and they have thus lost the ability to relate, to see things from any perspective but their own. Maybe their anger at their own inadequacies, contradictions and powerlessness trips them up. Whatever the reason, it has a lot to do with why the Evil Empire is kicking our butts. Derrick refers more than once to transformation, by which he means transformation into a sustainable society, one which does not require the importation of resources. I know there's a deep spiritual current running through Derrick's writings, so I'd like to delve into my own spiritually oriented view of transformation. Our sense of being, our consciousness, is mediated by the ego, which tells us that we are all separate...separate from each other and separate from nature. Most people would be surprised to learn that humans did not always experience themselves this way. (In fact, because ego-based consciousness is so self-evident and all they've ever known, most people would flat out refuse to believe it.) To take this further, the society we live in is the outer projection of our inner spiritual state. Hence our dominant institution, the corporation, is a fictional immortal person (the ego cannot admit death) which operates on the assumption that the nest it fouls is always someone else's. But in fact we all live in the same nest, and in that nest the oceans are dying or already dead, breathing may be hazardous to your health, and...but you know all of that. It gets even worse though. Our society has a vested interest in making certain no one ever undergoes a spiritual transformation to a higher state of consciousness in which our fundamental oneness is realized, because then we might not be so willing to participate in the destruction of the planet. Therefore any spiritual leanings must be ridiculed, marginalized, or safely diverted into patriarchal religions. But mostly we are distracted by a constant parade of trivialities and consumables, and never quite find the time to ask the larger questions. Meanwhile, the (quite profitable) destruction of the planet proceeds apace. So in our search for answers we would do well to remember that the inner and outer are intimately connected. And no, I'm not following Derrick's call to action with a call to inaction. Just as the politicos must open to a greater spiritual awareness, so must the spiritually inclined roll up their sleeves and get to work. In an apocalyptic age, there can be no fundamental separation between politics and spirituality. For a much deeper look at these ideas, I recommend that you read anything by Andrew Harvey, but especially his book, The Way of Passion. I misspoke in this video when I said that there are four kinds of sub-nuclear gravitational forces. Only one of the four is gravitational. Here is a link to a timetable calculated for 9pm EST (Philadelphia, US) around the world: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=5&day=10&year=2007&hour=21&min=0&sec=0&p1=198 100th Monkey Theory: I heard about this from a friend a few days ago. I just read about it at http://www.wowzone.com/monkey.htm. Apparently they were sweet potatoes, and there is scientific documentation that explains the progression. The collective unconscious change was not scientifically represented in this experiment. http://www.stickam.com/profile/katiesopinion?save=Return+to+Profile
