La situaci n de pobreza en Nicaragua afecta a 2,3 millones de personas, casi la mitad de la poblaci n total del pa s, de las cuales aproximadamente 830.000 (el 17% de la poblaci n total) sobreviven en situaci n de extrema pobreza. El ingreso promedio anual de la poblaci n pobre se sit a en 455 $. En cuanto al acceso a servicios b sicos en el rea rural, s lo el 28% de la poblaci n tiene acceso permanente al agua potable y el 55% de las viviendas del pa s carecen de instalaciones de saneamiento b sico.

Houve um debate com a filósofa Sueli Carneiro, Doutora em Filosofia da Educação pela USP e Diretora do Geledés -- Instituto da Mulher Negra. Logo após o debate, a Oxfam foi lançado um conjunto de publicações que trazem diferentes reflexões sobre o tema de gênero, todas desenvolvidas a partir de experiências concretas dos seus programas implementados no Brasil. Os textos analisam e sintetizam a experiência de trabalho da ONG em contextos diferentes, como nas zonas urbana e rural, em comunidades indígenas e quilombolas e na própria capacidade de sustentação das organizações da sociedade civil.
