Shandong has also been the home of a large number of historical figures, including Confucius, the great thinker and educator from China. Shandong Province is also considered the birthplace of China's pottery, porcelain and silk. Throughout the province the tourist can find traditional items like the clocks and watches of Yantai, the porcelain of Zibo, the kites of Weifang, the shell-carving and beer of Qingdao host of the 2008 Olympics sailing events. There are daily flights from Beijing to Yantai, less than an hour, costing less than $80. Weekend excursions can be arranged to visit the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square. Volunteer Abroad in Kenya: Volunteering Opportunities Due to a dramatic improvement in the political situation in Kenya that has brought calm and peace to the country, we are happy to announce the resumption of our volunteer programs. Including new projects in Nairobi and with the Masai people. Volunteer Abroad in Kenya: lies along the equator on the eastern coast of Africa. Kenya is bordered by Somalia and the Indian Ocean to the east, Ethiopia to the north, Sudan to the northwest, Uganda to the west and Tanzania to the south. The country has incredible topographical diversity, including mountains with snow-capped peaks, the Rift Valley with its scarps and volcanoes, flat desert landscapes and coral reefs and islets on the Indian Ocean coast. When most people think of Kenya, they think of world famous wilderness reserves and safari vacations but there is so much more. Kenya is home to over 50 different ethnic tribes, all with their own languages, cultures and customs. Regarded by many as the 'jewel of East Africa', Kenya also has some of Africa s best beaches, scenic countryside and a sophisticated tourist infrastructure. 10% of the land is designated as national parks and reserves and the wildlife sightings are one of a kind. Like so many countries in Africa, Kenya has been hit very hard by the Aids epidemic, especially in the rural areas. Million of people are infected with the disease and children are the worst affected. Many children are left orphaned, or raised by overburdened family members, or worse, end up living in the slums of Nairobi. One dramatic impact of AIDS deaths is the decline in life expectancy. The Central Bureau of Statistics estimates that because of the large number of AIDS deaths, the actual life expectancy is 46 years old! Parentless children and aging grandparents now compose many communities, unbalancing the socio-economic structure of the region which promtes continued poverty in many areas. We have volunteer programs available in Mombasa, and in Makuyu village about 30 miles north of Nairobi. In this district, 98% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity.

Volunteer Abroad in Cameroon: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteer Abroad in Cameroon: is a safe Central African Republic bordered to the west by the Gulf of Guinea. One of the most diverse countries in Africa, Cameroon is often referred to as "Africa in miniature . Cameroon has everything you would expect from the African continent; tropical rainforests, deserted golden beaches, great expanses of desert, vast lakes and savannah, and volcanic mountains in-between.Compared with other African countries, Cameroon enjoys political and social stability. Nevertheless, large numbers of Cameroonians live in poverty as subsistence farmers. The unemployment rate is high and those who are employed perform mostly agricultural tasks. The HIV/AID crises have hit hard especially the children, many of whom lack proper healthcare. Cameroon has one of the highest school attendance rates in Africa. Although attendance rates are high, there is a shortage of teacher leaving schools chronically understaffed.Cameroon is having two seasons that is the rainy and dry season; the rainy season runs from March to September while the dry season runs from October to February. The major spoken languages are still English and French but a multitude of more than 200 ethnic languages are also in circulation, with various tribes populating the country. Our programs are located in Buea and the surrounding rural towns where English is predominately spoken. The nearest airport from our head office is Douala International, about an hour drive from Buea. All participants should book their flights to Douala Airport. The volunteer program goal is to give international support to local organizations helping needy children and young people throughout south west Cameroon. Our program focus is on community development, health, agriculture, housing, feeding and educating these needy orphans and street children. By implementing sustainable programs and working with the community, our projects work to strengthen the present living conditions to allow all orphans and struggling street kids a chance to survive the crisis of poverty. With our volunteer programs we allow you to discover the wonders of Central Africa, while doing meaningful and rewarding community work. This is a great opportunity to explore life in rural areas in Cameroon, live and work amongst the locals and realize one person can make a difference.Volunteering with us and Gain A Broader View of the World!Location pages:Buea Home | Why Volunteer? | Organization/Info | Inclusions & Costs | Volunteer Application Process & Form | Volunteer Program Terms & Conditions News & Travel Links | Photo Gallery | FAQ | Spring Break | TELL A FRIEND | Privacy Policy AbroaderView.org - 1001 Dell Lane Suite B, Wyncote, PA 19095, USA Volunteer Abroad Project Tel: 1-215-780-1845 / Toll Free: 1-866-423-3258 / Fax: 1-215-887-0915 volunteers@abroaderview.org - www.abroaderview.org - info@abroaderview.org

Volunteer Abroad in Tanzania: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteering Abroad in Tanzania: is the largest of the East Africa countries (i.e. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) and offers spectacular landscape from the coastal plains to the east; the inland saucer-shaped plateau; and the highlands and the coastal islands. The country is named after Tanganyika, its mainland part, and the Zanzibar islands off its east coast. Gaining independence in 1961, Tanzania is a stable, peaceful country with few tribal or regional divisions. Tanzania draws many first-time Africa travelers because of its well developed tourist infrastructure. It is a land where you're most likely to spot large numbers of big game, plus world-class views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The country is recognized both in terms of wildlife and beauty. With national parks extending over some 33,660 sq km (13,000 sq miles), Tanzania has more land devoted to national parks and game reserves than any other wildlife destination in the world. Some of Tanzania s ecologically significant wildlife parks include the famous Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park in the north, and Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park in the south. Gombe National Park in the west is known as the site of Dr. Jane Goodall's studies of chimpanzee behavior. In addition to its stunning landscape, Tanzania is home to approximately 120 tribal groups. Tribal diversity is respected and far from being a source of separation, Tanzanians place a high value on their country s multicultural heritage. We have programs available in the Mwanza and Arusha, In these districts, 90% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity. The poverty experienced in these rural areas is not just a lack of money but also the inability to access basic needs, such as health care and health facilities as well as voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Despite having a lack of such basic needs, the Tanzanian people are world-renowned for their friendliness. Most volunteers are humbled by the everyday happy attitudes of the local people. Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Tanzania. Volunteer Abroad in Ecuador: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteering Abroad in Ecuador: Ecuador, a small South America country, is bordered to the north by Colombia, to the east and south by Peru, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The country is divided into four distinct regions; the Amazon, the Highlands, the Coast, and the Gal pagos Islands. Compared with many South American countries, Ecuador is very small. Nevertheless in this limited area there are at least 50 types of natural terrestrial vegetation, diverse ecosystems and an immense variation in wildlife. Ecuador is one of 17 mega diverse countries in the world according to Conservation International. With 1600 bird species (some 15% of the world's known bird species) in the continental area, and 38 more endemic to the Gal pagos. There are also 25,000 species of plants recorded; it has 106 endemic reptiles, 138 endemic amphibians, and 6,000 species of butterflies. The country has a plentitude of national parks, wildlife reserves, natural springs, volcanoes and ecological reserves and beautiful cities.Ecuador gives the tourists a mega bio-diversity and a chance for great adventures in the mountains, volcanoes, jungle, white beaches and exotic islands.Although in recent years Ecuador has benefited from a rise in tourism offer some economic relief, millions of people live below the poverty line, mainly children. Governmental statistics estimate that over one million children work to survive and maintain their families. Growing poverty, lack of education and limited governmental resources further worsen the problem of street children and orphans in Ecuador. A government study* concluded that 45% of the population between the ages of 10 and 16 are working, 60% of the children under the age of five are malnourished and a third of the population has not completed the first part of their basic education. (*First Congress on Nutrition Development, Quito 2000) Our volunteer projects allow you to help street children and orphans in Quito, teach English in a local Andes village, work at one of the numerous ecology/conservation bio stations or animal welfare reserves located throughout the Amazon, coastal and Andes regions. Volunteer Abroad in Costa Rica: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteer Abroad in Costa Rica: In 1502, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. Mention Costa Rica and people think paradise. The country's Disney-like cast of creatures ranging from howler monkeys to toucans is prolific and relatively easy to spot. The waves are prime; the beauty is staggering and the sluggish pace seductive.Costa Rica, despite being such a tiny nation, draws well over a million visitors every year - and you can see why. The incredibly varied topography means you can cruise a cloud forest one day, climb a volcano the next, and finish passed out on a hot sandy beach.Costa Rica is a tropical country and experiences only two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season is generally between late December and April; the wet season lasts the rest of the year. The highlands are cold: San Jos and the Central Valley get an 'eternal spring' with lows averaging 15 C (60 F) and highs averaging 26 C (79 F). Both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts are pretty much sweltering year-round - get ready for some bad-hair days. Temperatures vary little between seasons; the main influence on temperature is altitude. The humidity at low altitudes can be oppressive. We offer the following programs in Costa Rica: (1-4 week placements Optional start date) Program Length: 1-4 weeks Program Date: Flexible Start s day care center, rain forest restoration projects, horticultural and fish farming projects and infrastructure construction projects including work on a Women s Center. This is a great opportunity to experience the life and culture of the local indigenous people. Volunteers live with a local host family in a shared room; all meals are provided by the host family. Proficiency is Spanish is required, as well as an adventurous spirit. *2 week minimum suggested.Social/Welfare Service:. Volunteers work at a local children's home which doubles as an orphanage and day care. The children range in age from infancy to 12yrs old, some with mild handicaps. Volunteers assist the local staff with the basic needs such as feeding, bathing and clothing; as well arrange games and day trips with the kids. Teaching English, math, as well as manual labor (sweeping, painting, and gardening) may be involved. Basic/Proficient Spanish is required, as well as a positive, self-starter and flexible attitude.Education/Teaching: Volunteers can teach, or assist the local teacher with English classes. The kids vary in age and most do not have any proper schooling. By speaking English, new opportunities are available to the children that would otherwise be destined to stay in the cycle of poverty. Volunteers do not need previous teaching experience, although it would be helpful. Basic/Proficient Spanish is required, as well as a positive, flexible and committed attitude. Volunteers will need to create their own lesson plans with the help of the local teachers. Program Includes: Homestay or local guesthouse or on-site volunteer accommodations at orphanage. Includes three meals a day. Airport (or bus) transfers on arrival and departure. Our local Project Coordinators will provide orientation briefing, city tour, half day Spanish lessons. Introduction and placement in a volunteer work project. *Additional Spanish classes can be arranged for you locally. The project coordinator is available 24/7 in case of emergency, health-related or otherwise. They can assist in arranging sightseeing excursion before, during or after the volunteer program.Location pages:CaribbeanPacific Guanacaste Region

Volunteer Abroad in Honduras: La Ceiba Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteer Abroad in Honduras: Our programs in Honduras offer an unparalleled opportunity to discover one of the most captivating lands of Central America. Honduras is a safe, democratic country bordering the Caribbean Sea on the north coast and the Pacific Ocean on the south. In Honduras volunteers have a chance to see ancient ruins from the Mayan Empire and explore the limitless eco-trips available from white water rafting to rain forest zip line adventures. The country is an ecological wonder; covered in rain forests, cloud forests, mangroves and thick lush mountain ranges with pine and oak trees. For all its natural beauty, Honduras is one of the 10 poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with almost 50% of the population living below the poverty line. Recent years has seen a growing interest in ecotourism, especially along the coast, which is helping to boost some of the local economy. Volunteering in Honduras will provide you the chance of a lifetime to explore this mysterious country while giving back to the community. The Honduran people are known for their energetic attitude, love of festivals and colorful celebrations, folklore beliefs and the extensive use of coconut, in both sweet and savory foods, and even in soups. The Honduran culture is a blend of Latin America and a multi-ethnic blend of Mestizo, Amerindian, Black and Caucasian. This mix of people influences all aspects of the culture each bringing a unique blend to society. Our volunteer projects allow you to support the local children, at orphanages and primary schools, and work in a local hospital, HIV clinic or both. It has a population of 27 million, over half of which are under 18 years of age. Famously called the "Pearl of Africa" by Winston Churchill, it is home to one of the most diverse and concentrated ranges of African fauna including the highly endangered mountain gorilla and the chimpanzee. Unlike its neighbors; Kenya and Tanzania with their built up tourist infrastructure, Uganda is still growing meaning visitors can experience "real" Africa. There are bustling open markets, lush subsistence farming, charming rural villages and a multitude of National Parks. Today, Uganda has one of the highest orphan rates in the world, mainly due to the terrible HIV epidemic that has engulfed Africa. There are over 2 million children living with this disease, most of whom are under 15 years old. We have programs available in Jinja, Kampala and in the rural villages of Mpigi District. In this district, 98% of its population lives in rural areas, and subsistence agriculture is the major activity.
