Here's a pretty simple method I sometimes use when designing outfits for characters. First I paint in the shape of the body using the paint brush to add and the eraser to subtract, on a layer above the background. Next I hit Preserve Transparency on that layer, and duplicate it. This next layer is for the shading of the skin. I make sure Preserve Transparency is on and then I fill the layer with white and then set the layer to Multiply. White becomes invisible when in Multiply mode so only the shadows will show up. I use a medium gray with a tint of blue for the shadow colour and then shade the skin at around 30% opacity. Next I make a layer for the clothing under the shadow layer but over the skin layer, by duplicating the skin layer and then setting it to preserve transparency. Then I used white to lay out where I wanted the clothing to go. Mind you, this really only works for skin tight clothing like lingerie. If I was going to make something that doesn't stick to the skin, I'd make a new layer above the shadow layer, paint in the shape of the clothing and then set it to preserve transparency so I could paint in shadows and highlights and folds and stuff. That's what I did for the hair and the belt thing that this girl's wearing. That's pretty much it... I hope someone finds this useful.
