What is 'La Diablada'? It represents the denial of the imposed religion by the invaders. Spaniards thought of the devil (el Diablo) as the opposite force to their religion. Therefore, Indigenous cultures had to be in contraposition to this deity. The lithurgic drama is played out with the 'diablos' symbolizing centuries of cultural resistance to various invaders.The well-known musical group LLAJTAYMANTA peforms la Diablada which is danced by the KORY WAYNAS (Golden Youth) in Montreal, 2006.Kory Waynas is member of the Bolivia Action Solidarity Network (www.bolivia.grupopoyo.org)

Morenada - Llajtaymanta & Kory Waynas

The Morenada is a traditional dance in the Bolivian carnival and originates in Oruro. It is inspired in the sufferings of the African slaves brought to Bolivia in order to work in the silver mines of Potos . The enormous tongue of the dark masks is ment to represent the physical state of these mines workers and the rattling of the Matracas are frequently associated with the rattling of the slaves chains.
