Tim Barrus: Where Are the Catacombs

Tim Barrus: Where Are the Catacombs

from Films reliés ensemble on September 16, 2009
Duration: 36
http://le-too.blogspot.com Tim Barrus and Mary Scriver Where Are the Catacombs Inside or Outside The two of you seem like you are always doing this dance between what is internal and what is external and where is reality in that. I do not have the answers for you. Only more questions about what is art. I was not with Cinematheque when you were making Orpheus, but I have now gone through many of those materials that are in Cinematheque's video library. I wish I had been around for that when you were making the catacombs, but it took me a year of banging on the door to even get in. I was reading you on the Internet when you were in Amsterdam. Orpheus intrigued me very much. I still want to walk through those catacombs. I have an observation about Orpheus and a little video I made to try and show you what I mean in my observation. For much of this work, Orpheus and the catacombs seems to be a place. An art studio in a renovated Dutch factory where Cinematheque still maintains a space but with only two artists there at the moment and I see that the situation there is very fluid. I am hoping to be able to go there to make video someday. Orpheus seems grounded in the idea of place being a physical space like the catacombs where things happened, but every so often you played with the idea that Orpheus' catacombs were a space inside the mind where things happened. You go to the internal and then it gets scary and so you retreat back to the external where you then hide in your histories while at the same time Tim keeps telling us that we cannot do that and we must focus on right now. Tim seems totally paranoid about people peering in at his secrets. Maybe I am wrong because I am assuming about what is written from what is filmed. It was very interesting because most catacombs (like Paris is what I know) is where nothing happens only death and bones. You seemed to come down in favor of the physical space being what is real. Your work is very much an exploration into what is reality. Your work is also art that has a paranoid aspect to it especially Tim. I liked the times when you were suggesting that the catacomb was inside the brain and that introspection was the peering in and what you saw was us. Or maybe it was just the turmoil of us. You seemed to recoil from turmoil in general at which point you then retreated to the catacombs as being a physical space in an art studio labyrinth where things happened. You do not make up your minds. Are the catacombs real? I will not know until I am allowed to go there. The catacomb being something inside the mind seemed to almost scare both of you. You toyed with it then you jumped back into your own pasts and layered it with a perspective as to who we were and I am not sure it worked. I have only seen the videos and some of the text so I could be way off here. I could be making wrong assumptions. Tim doesn't maintain a coherent page by page record of anything which is very frustrating. My video is an attempt to say that the real catacomb is what we make inside the mind. I am suggesting that this is the real world we live in. I am saying that maybe we recoil from what turbulence we find there, too. Please feel free to respond to me. My video is only 35 seconds long. I have put so much time and effort into this and I know it is not much but these things are harder to make that I knew when I started. Your comments would mean a lot to me. We do not have grades like a traditional school. I do not know if my video works. This makes feedback very important. Tim, I used your Itunes but I need my own account please. Tim, what are the possibilities of my being able to move to Amsterdam please. Thank you. Aimon

Tortoises, composed by C. Saint-Sa ns, is another piece that suits the bass ocarina very well. This movement is making fun of a famous melody written by another composer. Can you tell what this tune is? I play on the Enigma Bass Ocarina from STL Ocarina. You can find more information about this ocarina at: http://stlocarina.com/enigmabass.htmlIf you like to learn this piece, you'll find sheet music here:http://stlviolin.squarespace.com/free-sheet-music/2009/2/6/tortoises-by-c-saint-saens.html
