Dragon Age: Origins Review

Dragon Age: Origins Review

from PWN or DIE on November 05, 2009

A decade ago one of the greatest western RPGs ever, Baldur s Gate II, graced computer screens across the world. It was an expansive game that would lay the ground work for many of Bioware s later projects. After creating the masterpieces of Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect fans were beginning to wonder if the developers were ever going to tread back into the Forgotten Realms (part of the D s Gate was in). After a few years and a couple detours Bioware has responded with Dragon Age: Origins. Though it does not return to the Forgotten Realms, Dragon Age: Origins is definitely a spiritual successor to Baldur s Gate. With expectations running high, will Dragon Age: Origins go down in history as one of the greatest western RPG s? Well, I am here to assure that Bioware has met and exceeds many of those expectations. Story: 10 The developers at Bioware have been known to create some of gaming s greatest stories and that is no different in Dragon Age: Origins. Upon creating a character you will choose your race (Dwarf, Elf, Human) and your class (Warrior, Mage, Rogue). But what really sets this game apart are the origin stories. There are two different origins stories per race. For example Elves in the the land of Ferelden are treated as second class citizens. Most work in the cities as servants and slaves while others live a nomadic life wandering the forests and continuously moving from a fear of being captured. For my character I chose the latter, an elf that lives a nomadic life. When I encountered humans for the first time they treated me as someone beneath them. This can create a lot of interesting dialogue between characters and unique choices in the game. Each origin story is different but all of them will converge to a single point. Eventually you become a Grey Warden, a group of warriors tasked with fending off the darkspawn and the demonic leader, the Archdemon. There is also multiple paths to choose in your story that will lead to things you may not have expected. You can be good or evil and many characters in your party will change how they feel about you when it comes to that. However, there is no meter to track your good vs. evil standings as the game wants you to live by the consequences of your decisions. In fact I want to note that a lot of decisions in the game are not black and white. You will have to make some tough decisions that lay within the grey area. The story will likely not break new ground for those familiar with the fantasy genre. However, that s easy to forgive considering how engrossing the story is; Dragon Age: Origins can tell an epic fantasy story better than any other game to date. Gameplay: 9 Combat in Dragon Age: Origins based is very tactics-oriented. You will not be running into every fight head first. You need to be thinking about your strategy of who to make your priority. For instance, should I fight this dragon now or later? The game makes you think before every battle. However, that is all dependant on the difficulty and version of the game your playing. If you choose to play on casual your strategy will not carry as much weight but on hard you must pay close attention to what your party is doing. Also note the PC version has a different approach in terms of tactics. For example, the PC version allows players to switch to an overheard view of the battlefield and issues orders while the game is paused. Also, the console versions were streamlined more to focus on action as opposed to tactics. The fighting within Dragon Age can also be very intense. The sense of accomplishment after slaying a massive dragon is beyond satisfactory. And trust me, fighting the massive dragons in this game is both intimidating and difficult. Presentation: 9 Dragon Age: Origins is a beautifully crafted game but it will not blow anyone away in terms of graphics. The texture work can be muddy at times and there can also be some screen tearing. Besides that though the architecture in the game and the art style add to the games rich atmosphere. Every environment feels so developed that it could exist (though it may not look as good as, say, Uncharted 2). I personally played the console version, which is visually a little bit behind the PC version of the game. The voice acting within the game is almost some of the best work Bioware has ever done. These characters will draw you in to their stories and their cultures so much that they could almost be real people. The music is also top notch with moving orchestral pieces in towns and more intense pieces during battles. There is a lot of stand out work here that keeps you enchanted within the world of Ferelden. What really makes this game mind blowing in presentation is how much information and history there is. From the mythology, religion, race history, to stories of various organizations; this game details everything. It s very similar to how Bioware did Mass Effect with the codex of all the history and information between all the different species of the galaxy. Replayability: 9.5 Dragon Age: Origins is a tasking game in terms of time. I have been playing well over 15 hours and have yet to complete the first major mission in the game. There is just so much to do and so much to see that you will get lost in what you are actually doing. You tie that into each individual origin story that can take 6 hours to complete, a story that can take roughly 50 hours to beat, and multiple endings that depend on the choices you make; you are looking at a game that could potentially consume your life. If you permit to immerse yourself in the story of Dragon Age you will find plenty of things to do, just make sure you have an open weekend to do it. Plus, Bioware has said they will focus on DLC and expansions for the next two years. The only thing I want more of in the game is more armor and weapons options. I find a lot of the same items and most of them are obsolete to the armor and weapons I am using. This however is only a minor complaint and I am sure with all of the DLC on the horizon they will introduce more armor and weapons. Overall: 9.4 If I had to sum Dragon Age Origins up into one word it would be epic. With one of the finest and most detailed stories ever told Bioware has lived up to their matchless storytelling reputation again.  This game will demand your time and you will likely submit to its demandings. So make sure to tell your family that they will not being seeing a lot of you. If you are on the fence as to which version to buy I would recommend the PC version (if you have a system to support it, of course). You will be treated with better graphics as well with more tactical gameplay. Now if you could excuse me for a couple of months, I am going to give my life to Dragon Age: Origins.
