Keep an eye-out for Make Vol. 14, which has a special section on optics. You'll learn how to make an inexpensive but powerful digital microscope that will allow you to display bacteria colonies on a video monitor, a vintage-looking opaque projector that can display artwork from books onto a wall, a model of a crazy-angled room that makes things appear to change size, and a cool kaleidoscope. MIT Physics Demo -- Microwave PolarizationMIT Physics Demo -- Microwave Polarization
from MIT News Office
May 15, 2008

A polarized microwave emitter and a polarized microwave receiver face each other on a table. At first, the emitter and receiver are polarized in the same direction (up-down), and all the emitted signal gets received. When a metal comb in inserted between them, with the teeth pointed down, the signal is blocked. This is because the microwaves are polarized in the same direction that the teeth are pointing, creating small currents in the metal that reflect the microwaves backwards. When the comb teeth are turned horizontally, the signal passes through undisturbed. When the receiver is turned 90 degrees, no signal is received. However, when the comb is inserted at a 45 degree angle, some signal passes through. This is because light waves are made up of two perpendicular components that add up to form the polarization of the wave. When one component is knocked out, the wave changes polarization. Read more about polarizers here.

Author: Yalo Added: Tue, 13 May 2008 12:19:33 -0800 Duration: 416Final part of the 35 mm film camera lens equivalent conversions. Some actual camcorder video in this clip at the 32 mm long zoom focal lenght. Equivalent to the 407 mm 35 mm film lens we calculated in Part II. Of note the video is rendered in windows and converted to flash so it is not the original video clip and the web specs list the equivalent 35 mm lens equivalent number for this camera as 422 mm. But for our calculations to get in the ball park we got 407/8. So when I refer to the 408 mm lens in the video it is the really the 32 mm focal lenght setting of my camcorder.
