Experiencing Fall in the Pacific Northwest

Experiencing Fall in the Pacific Northwest

from KUOW Presents Podcast on September 24, 2009
Duration: 0
Seattle travel writer Crai Bower is a former New Englander. He knows what it's like to see, feel, taste and hear fall coming on. But here in the Pacific Northwest, some say it's hard to vividly experience seasonal change. Crai disagrees. He recommends getting outside now to experience the season change in the sounds of cracking seed pods during an evening stroll on a Puget Sound beach. Crai Bower spoke with KUOW's Dave Beck. His most memorable experience of fall in the Pacific Northwest happened when he was a college student visiting Mt. Rainier.

One of the rarest things in the modern world is silence. Especially on radio. Silence makes some people nervous, but not Gordon Hempton. Gordon is an Emmy Award winning sound recording artist who calls himself the Sound Tracker. He traveled to almost all 390 of America's national parks in search of the place with the least human noise and the most natural silence. Then, he found it in his own back yard in the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula. Gordon calls the spot One Square Inch of Silence, and he's fighting to preserve it. KUOW's Sarah Waller met with Gordon to bring us the rarest noise of all.
