Las emisiones de dióxido de carbono a la atmósfera amenazan la supervivencia de los arrecifes de coral y de numerosas especies marinas, cuya desaparición afectaría a los ecosistemas oceánicos. Esta es la conclusión principal del informe 'Acidificación. ¿Cómo afecta el CO2 a los océanos?' elaborado por la asociación Oceana. Este grupo ecologista ha reclamado la inclusión de esta cuestión en la agenda de la Conferencia sobre cambio climático que se celebrará el próximo mes en Copenhague. El CO2 de la atmósfera absorbido por los océanos provoca un proceso de acidificación que impide la formación de estructuras de carbonato cálcico por parte de organismos marinos como crustáceos, moluscos y corales. Dichos organismos necesitan este componente para la formación de sus conchas y esqueletos externos.
