Video: School Board Amends BudgetVideo: School Board Amends Budget
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North
June 27, 2008

The current renovations on Jim Hill Middle School has cost Minot Public Schools around 1.2 million dollars as of today. That unexpected expense has put them over their budget for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. Today the school board met to amend their General Fund Expenditure Budget by increasing it by $600,000, which all members agreed was the right decision. The board had to make the decision by the end of June to raise the budget. Superintendent Dr. David Looysen said it was an easy decision for the board because they had the money available in a reserve fund. (Dr. David Looysen, Superintendent, Minot Public Schools) There's no problems because we carry reserve funds for that. We've been criticized for carrying a large reserve fund. It's absolutely necessary in our position to carry that. Being fiscally responsible we have to carry some over so we don't have to go to tax payers for everything. The previous budget was $59,375,000 and the new budget is $59,975,000.

Perfection is the destination, imperfection is the journey. Words the graduating class at Maddock High School take with them as they move on in life. Our 'Student Spotlight' shines on the valedictorian from Maddock today Michelle Olson... (Michelle Olson - Maddock High School) I have gone to Maddock since Kindergarten and it has been nice. It is a small town so you can do whatever you want from sports, to groups, to music. I have been active in FFA in fact I was the president. I have been in music and sports and in cheerleading and science club too. My favorite class was English with Mrs. Sears because she is tough and makes you work hard. Next year I am going to Bismarck State and majoring in psychology and will then move to Minot State and get a masters in child psychology. I would like to work in state at a school or hospital or health centers. Joining Michelle at the top of the class this year in Maddock are these students. Congratulations to all of them for their graduation this past weekend.

Sidney High School's class of 2008 will be remembered fondly by the four students you are about to hear from. They are some of the top this year and all are in our 'Student Spotlight'... (Amanda Kessel - Sidney) I have gone to school in Sidney for about five years. I moved here in the 8th grade. I've gained lots from the experiences here through sports and my clubs. That has been the favorite part of my school experience. (Timothy Shenk - Sidney) Throughout high school I have been in high school and Basketball and key club and FCCLA and French club. (Afton Garland - Sidney) My favorite subjects have been math and science and business. I like math because it comes natural. Science and business are both interesting too. (Courtney Peck - Sidney) Next year I plan on attending Montana State to major in physics and after that I would like my doctorate too in astrophysics. Our congratulations to everyone at Sidney High School who has wrapped up their high school careers...especially these four top seniors.

THE BERNALILLO COUNTY SHERIFF'S ACADEMY IS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME. THE ACADEMY IS MOVING OUT OF ITS CURRENT TRAINING CENTER AT KIRTLAND AIR BASE THIS FALL... BUT BUILDING A BRAND NEW FACILITY IS GOING TO TAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND AT LEAST A COUPLE OF YEARS. ANTOINETTE ANTONIO IS LIVE AT KIRTLAND. ANTOINETTE? B-C-S-O TELLS US THEY'RE IN THE PROCESS OF PICKING A SHORT TERM TRAINING CENTER. FOR NOW ALL THEY NEED IS SOMETHING WITH CLASSROOMS AND A GYM. BUT THE ACADEMY'S LONG TERM GOALS INVOLVE MUCH MORE. BY THE END OF THE YEAR... THE BERNALILLO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WILL NO LONGER SHARE THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S TRAINING CENTER AT KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE. B-C-S-O PAYS 52- THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR TO LEASE THE SPACE... BUT SHARING JUST ISN'T PRACTICAL ANYMORE. 'the reason that we're leaving is that the training demands place on both the sheriff's department and the D.O.E. had made it somewhat difficult for us to coordinate usage of some of the facilities out there.'NOW B-C-S-O WANTS IT'S OWN CENTER. BUT IT WON'T BE JUST FOR SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES IN TRAINING. THE DEPARTMENT WANTS TO FIND... OR BUILD ... A BRAND NEW FACILITY THAT WILL ALSO BE USED BY THE BERNAILLO COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT... AND THE METROPOLITAN DETENTION CENTER. THE COUNTY MANAGER'S OFFICE SAYS THE PRICE TAG WOULD BE ROUGHLY 16-MILLION DOLLARS. 'I would think within the next couple of years we would start the process of building the location because as you know funding is an issue.'UNTIL THEN.. CAPTAIN MATTHEW GONZALES SAYS B- C-S-O WILL FIND SOMEWHERE FOR CADETS TO TRAIN. 'short term we need a facility with several classrooms as well as a gym, long term we need a facility with classrooms a gym as well as a firearms range and a driving track things of that nature.'THE COUNTY MANAGERS OFFICE SAYS THE 16-MILLION DOLLARS FOR A NEW FACILITY WOULD COME FROM STATE, COUNTY, AND BOND MONEY. School was out of session today at Minot State for a scheduled assessment day but the classrooms were still busy with learning the learners were just a bit younger. The Minot State Science Club hosted close to a thousand area elementary kids for a science open house where they brought the lessons the kids learn out of their science book to life! All three floors of the science building were bustling with curious kids and they were getting plenty of excitement and of course some education snuck in there as well! Cory Mattern works with the Science department and says this annual event is always a blast... (Cory Mattern - MSU Science Department) Lot of explosions and flames and neat things that they don't usually get to see in the day. SO WHAT DO YOU HEAR FROM THE KIDS? Lots of 'Wow!' and 'More can we see that one again?!' 4th, 5th, and 6th graders were at Cyril Moore science center today for the event.

While the goal of most all college students is to achieve the highest grade point average they can, the goal of the institution they attend is to give those students the best opportunity to do just that. Learning how to do a better job of educating was the goal today at Minot State University. Today was a scheduled assessment day with students given the day off staff members were there learning how Minot State could improve the education it delivers. Visiting professor Jillian Kinzey from Indiana University-Bloomington told them getting students and staff working together is key... (Jillian Kinzey - Indiana University-Bloomington) Get students to dedicate more time on the activities we know are important for learning like studying, and working on group projects in and out of class. How can we get more students to do that? The schools that are effective are the schools that structure that into the plans are hold each other accountable. Kinzey met with staff and faculty members this morning and Minot State students this afternoon.
