keep his job as albuquerque's police chief. that announcement was made tonight by mayor-elect richard berry. some city councilors say berry's decision proves that he's not living up to his promise of bringing change jeff maher broke the story - - he's live at a-p-d headquarters downtown with tonight's top story. mayor-elect berry says leading minute thumbnail 10:00 pm up to his decision he got many letters from the albuquerque police officers association, and other groups wanting shultz to stay. but some city councilors say many police officers in the department wanted schultz out. "first, i am proud to announce that i am re- appointing ray schultz as chief of police for the albuquerque police department" mayor-elect richard berry is keeping ray schultz, who has been the city's police chief since 2005. he also named two new deputy chief's for the department. "what i'm hearing is the police officers want some different change, i think that this is really going to hurt the morale of the police department, in the years i've been city councilor i've seen that is very political at the upper level" berry ran his campaign on a atform of change and new direction. but he tells us he always had a strong liking to schultz "and what i said during the campaign is i thought minute thumbnail 10:01 pm we had someone who is a tremendous law enforcement officer, a fine gentleman, and i would make my decision in that regard once i was elected, if i was elected, and given that opportunity" sources tell eyewitness news four that ed adams, who was the right-hand man for mayor martin chavez as the city's c-a-o, will be appointed by berry as the chief operations officer. city councilors brad winter and debbie o'malley are both against that, saying berry's decision- making thus far is a disservice to the voters who wanted a change. but city councilor ken sanchez says berry is making the right call "i think we need to retain that institutional knowledge, i think it's critical to the city and critical to the new mayor that he retains some of these individuals that have a great deal of experience" chief schuz says he's planning on bringing some change to the police department -- including reducing the number of bureaus from four to three, and consolidating the department to improve efficiency chief schultz took over as minute thumbnail 10:02 pm police chief in april 2005. he replaced gil gallegos--- who stepped down because of a scandal involving the evidence room. after a year long investigation--- the state attorney general's office found 58-thousand dollars in cash disappeared. missing evidence-- and in some cases--- evidence destroyed.
