A series of short video interviews, Notes on Prisma tries to sketch the experience of the Prisma Forum in Mexico at the end of June and beginning of July 2009 for those who were not there (which includes me). Immediately having access only to participating artists who are in New York, I'm learning about the event as I go from one conversation to another. Different artists, invited in different capacities and engaged in different ways talk about what they did, what impact the experience has had on them and what they think Prisma adds to the current practices of production and distribution of work, as well as the discourse and modes of collaboration that were been explored.minimum background information: Prisma Forum, coordinated by Monserrat Payr and Horacio Lecona, launched a sophisticated website/initiative calling for an encounter to take part in Mexico this past summer. Participants would come together for two consecutive weeks, first in Oaxaca then in Mexico City, to share their work and explore diverse modes of collaboration, exchange and discursive forms. Global in scope, Prisma was also experimenting with democratic politics in opening the Forum to anyone through online proposals.

A Talk by Paola Gutierrez Galindo St. James Church, Johnson City, NY October 22, 2009 Why do millions make the unlikely decision to leave their communities to live in a country with increasing anti-immigrant hostility? Why did the number of Mexicans who made this decision more than double after the implementation of NAFTA? Paola will untangle the complex factors that have pushed so many to abandon her community and come live among ours. --Paola Gutierrez Galindo was born and raised in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, Mexico. --About 90% of Paola s family has migrated north. She is the only member of her graduating class not living in the U.S. --As a community organizer, Paola works in local indigenous communities to respond to the causes and impacts of migration. --Paola holds a degree in indigenous law and is working on a masters degree that explores the impacts of migration on identity and family in Oaxacan indigenous communities.
