YOu start off on a path that looks good, then encounter an obstacle. Sometimes you can get around it, sometimes you have to go back and start a new path. Barack Obama has a big fan base in Hawaii and he should have considering he was born in the Aloha State. He also amazingly has a large following in Japan in at least one city that shares the same name; Obama, Japan. Do you ever give someone a compliment about something newish, and they come back with something like, "Oh, I guess that means you thought the way it used to be sucked." In Waikiki at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua, extends this beautiful jetty simply called The Waikiki Wall. It s a favorite local spot that s been around for decades and is popular for boogie boarders and the occasional jump off the wall. On July 4th we spent our day hanging out in Waikiki soaking up the sun and catching some of the latest action at the wall. While this is a beautiful place to enjoy some fun in the sun and a splash in the water, we CAUTION you that it is very DANGEROUS to jump off the wall and to boogie board here due to the shallow waters that surround the wall. In fact if you do take a visit to the wall, you ll notice how the more knowledgeable locals wait for a wave to come in before jumping off the wall. Despite the dangers it is still one of the best places around for some genuine ocean fun, so be sure and pay it a visit! iPod | Phone | 4:11 Last week Barack Obama launched a new web site Fight the Smears to be able to respond to false attacks and politically-motivated slurs. It reminds of FactCheck.org which is a non-partisan site run by the Annenberg Foundation. In the old days, someone could start a rumor or make a claim and it was very difficult to combat it. Once it made it onto the airways, where media and communication was in the hands of a very few, one bad story could make or break a person. Not anymore. Bloggers and journalists alike can put forth their own view of the "facts" and more than ever we can choose whom to believe and support. I like that. iPod | Phone | 4:52 A new social web application I've been playing with called Plurk has a feature called karma points. You earn points by inviting people to join, posting messages, etc. In other words, you earn good karma by promoting their service. I find it irritating, and was discussing this with David Beaudoin, and such was the inspiration for this episode. I find karma to be a concept that mis-places blame where none is due, induces guilt when consciousness is more useful, and confuses genuine feedback aka cause and effect from any given situation with shoulds and should nots. She approached this situation with a lot of consciousness and planning. She makes a great case for her actions and I agree with her. Risk can be managed so much more consciously than most of us do. Some of them are understandably longer term items, like house remodel tasks. I am working on moving them out of the way, so their place on the board makes sense. In this episode I get to mix my two podcasts. In October 2007 the Disney Company announced that they were going to put in a Disney Vacation Club resort in Hawaii. I took my camera out to the Ko Olina resort where the DVC is going to be built and take a look at the location. Nothing going on out there at the moment, but in 2011, the expected opening year, there will be another 800+ rooms on this site. This is big for Oahu in that it is estimated that they will create about 1000 jobs with the building of this resort. With a number of people that commute into urban Honolulu from the west side of the island, the addition of these jobs is expected to have a big impact for that side of the island.
