The history of the Louvre Palace dates back to 1200 A.D. when Philipp August built a fortress close to the river. Today, a modern glass pyramid decorates the courtyard of the former royal residence which, since the time of the Revolution, has been transformed into a museum that also contains one of the world's most famous art galleries. In 1670, Louis the Fourteenth founded the Hotel Des Invalides, a unique charity for soldiers that had been wounded during battle and a home for those who had previously been forced to live as beggars. The adjoining domed Cathedral of the Invalids is a masterpiece of Baroque Classicism and it contains the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Cathedral Of Notre Dame, a Gothic masterpiece, that is also referred to as the 'Mother Church of the Nation', was built on the foundations of a Roman temple and took almost 200 years to build. Kings, monsters and grotesque figures populate its fa??ades, and bizarre gargoyle-like creatures peer down from above. This is where the kings and queens of France were crowned and where Napoleon crowned himself! Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace and boasts 237 steps that lead up to its main entrance. Similar to the Marcus Cathedral in Venice and the Saint Front in southwest France, it was built in Byzantine style with 5 domes. Its interior is richly decorated throughout with reliefs, paintings and mosaics that are overshadowed by its exquisite architecture. This is still one of the world's most beautiful cities. Lyon was founded on the Fourvi??re hill as a Roman colony in 43 BCE by Munatius Plancus, a lieutenant of Caesar, on the site of a Gaulish hill-fort settlement called Lug[o]dunon, from the Celtic god Lugus ('Light', cognate with Old Irish Lugh, Modern Irish L?) and d?non (hill-fort).

Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the second-largest metropolitan area in France after that of Paris, with a population estimated to be 1,783,400 in 2007. Its urban region (R??gion Urbaine de Lyon), represents half of the Rh??ne-Alpes r??gion population with three million inhabitants. Lyon is also a major industrial center specialized in chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. There is also a significant software industry with a particular focus on video games.

It is believed that the origin of the richly decorated Episcopal cathedral of Notre Dame dates back to the time of Bishop Maurice De Sully in 1163. But the majority of the cathedral's present day architecture with its strange and fantastic creatures of ancient mythology, such as the chimeras, was designed in the 19th century. The church owes much of its fame to the famous French author, Victor Hugo and his book The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, a great classic of French literature. The stone chimeras are reminiscent of the book's main character, Quasimodo. The remarkable and beautifully designed rose windows in the transept are particularly noteworthy as each is original and dates back to 1270 A.D. In 1804 Napol??on Bonaparte was crowned emperor in Notre Dame by Pope Pius The Seventh on this famous island on the River Seine, the Ile De La Cit??. For the French nation the historic importance of this impressive monument is inestimable.
