Video: Alternate your workout and cut it by half

Video: Alternate your workout and cut it by half

from KOB Albuquerque on November 12, 2009
Duration: 0
To all the spinners and runners and stair climbers out there -- there's a new message. Spending more time at the gym may not help as much as this. Sprinting -- for even just a few seconds at a time could make your workout dramatically more efficient. Interval training may be a more effective way to lose weight than we ever realized. "We use interval training to keep it fun but also to increase the intensity without people really paying as much attention to intensity," Kathleen Kennedy, a trainer, said. It's a mind trick that appears to work. Researchers at an Australian University found people who rode for 40 minutes at a steady pace - lost an average of two pounds. While another group that rode just 20 minutes alternating between eight second sprints and 12 seconds of slower riding -- lost an average of six pounds. Half the time -- triple the results. "You work harder but I guess you get some recovery time after which makes it easier - or it feels easier to get a good workout," Melissa Burns, a spinning class participant, said. Scientists still aren't sure exactly why it works -- one theory is the sprints stimulate hormones that regulate fat cells. If cycling's not your thing - you can get the same effect on an elliptical machine - a stair climber - or a treadmill - just by working short sprints into your routine. You can incorporate it into almost anything you do - you can jump rope for three minutes at a fast pace and then sit down and rest. Bursts of energy to battle the bulge.

Video: Tyson arrested after scuffle with paparazzo

Mike Tyson was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday night. The former boxing champion was traveling with his wife and ten month old child when he got into an altercation with a photographer allegedly hitting the man. The paparazzo suffered an injury to his forehead. Tyson was not hurt. A statement from Tyson’s publicist says he was acting "in self defense as a father protecting his child." Both men reportedly plan to file battery charges against each other. Tyson has been released on his own recognizance. The Los Angeles Times is quoting an unnamed source who says Tyson told police the photographer hit him trying to provoke a response. And that the photographer claims Tyson punched him and tried to take the film from his camera. The photographer was taken to the hospital to be checked out before being booked.

Video: Clock ticks on Gov's budget cut decisions

Video: Clock ticks on Gov's budget cut decisions

from KOB Albuquerque on November 11, 2009
Duration: 0
a big decision looms tonight about what's next for the state's massive budget shortfall. state lawmakers are waiting and watching anxiously as governor richardson has one day left to approve their budget cuts - or minute thumbnail 06:00 pm wipe them out with his veto pen. stuart dyson is here with what lawmakers are worried about. call it a billion dollars - if you add up the last budget year - the current budget year - and the next budget year. that's the size of the hole the recession has blown in the state's checking account - that's what everybody's worried about. the legislature plugged most of the hole in last month's special session - approving spending cuts of more than seven percent for most state agencies - with much smaller percentage cuts for public schools - higher education - and medicaid. since then the governor has complained loudly about the cuts - painting dire pictures of prisons closing - state parks shutting down - welfare medical services dwindling away - lawmakers expect him to say no to some of their spending cuts - to cut the cuts. " without making these cuts state government is on the brink of closing - plain and simple - it is that severe of a budget crisis - we can't delay it - if we minute thumbnail 06:01 pm delay it it's just like paying our mortgage with our credit card." " we have a constitution in the state of new mexico that says we live within the budget every year - if he does that - for every cut he makes obviously it unbalances that budget." lawmakers in both parties say anything that gets vetoed will be back on the table when they come back for their regular session in january - the governor has said tax increases are inevitable. with an unemployment rate of nearly eight percent - new mexico has lost more than 40 thousand jobs in the last year - almost all of them in the private sector - there have been no layoffs of state employees - back to you. governor richardson has made two sizeable cost-saving moves since the special session. he ordered a freeze for all capital outlay projects. the freeze is meant to help identify 150-million dollars in money which hasn't been spent. the governor also a signed a bill from the special session which raids the state's scholarship minute thumbnail 06:02 pm endowment fund. the move pulls 68-million dollars from the fund -- leaving 16-million dollars behind for higher education scholarships

Video: Gov. urges New Mexicans to get flu shots

Video: Gov. urges New Mexicans to get flu shots

from KOB Albuquerque on November 10, 2009
Duration: 0
governor richardson takes to the airwaves with a flu-fighting message ... but it's leaving a lot of new mexicans asking - what's the point? stuart dyson is here with a look at ads that may be out of step with reality. it's all about flu vaccines - the governor and the lieutenant governor urging us to go get our shots - when the reality is there are no shots to get for most of us. " i'm governor bill richardson - in new mexico we're well prepared for h1n1 and seasonal flu." the governor's new tv ad advises us to stay home if we're sick - keep sick kids out of school - plus this. " and if you're high risk - get vaccinated against both flu strains." lieutenant governor diane denish's ad focuses more o hygiene and prevention - but gets to a similar point. " if you're at high risk get a vaccination against both flu strains - your children are at high risk and you are at high risk if you are pregnant - minute thumbnail 06:05 pm have a chronic health condition or care for an infant." trouble is both vaccines are in short supply and getting them is hard - even for some high-risk new mexicans. " all we hear in the news is that they don't have enough vaccinations for kids - plus my wife's pregnant - so she still hasn't got vaccinated - we're kind of on a waiting list - what kind of waiting list i don't know." " for one thing my kids have asthma so they're more likely to get it. q: they're in that high risk category? a: yes. q: still you haven't been informed about any clinics or anything? a: no. q: how does that make you feel? a: angry - makes me feel very angry." the state health department says new mexico is getting less than one percent of the vaccine as it's produced - the feds dole it out based on each stat'e's share of the population. " to date we've received - we've been able to order - what was it - 186 thousand doses - which sounds like a lot but school age children count for about a half a million." minute thumbnail 06:06 pm the governor's office says while vaccine shipments have been slower than expected - that doesn't take away from the importance of the prevention and preparation message - and more vaccine is arriving each and every week - back to you.

Video: Don't underestimate sleep in battling the flu

Video: Don't underestimate sleep in battling the flu

from KOB Albuquerque on November 10, 2009
Duration: 0
Before you rise and shine tomorrow, you may want to hit that snooze button -- getting enough sleep could be the healthiest thing you do this flu season. "It really is just as important as washing your hands and it's a major component of total body wellness," Dr. Jeremy Weingarten, an Internist, said. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found the more you sleep, the less likely you are to get sick. "People who got less than seven hours of sleep had caught the common cold more frequently than those who got more than eight hours of sleep," Dr. Weingarten said. Call it vitamin zzz's -- sleep is a natural and free way to boost your immune system. Sleep doctors say children and adults say adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep - tossing and turning doesn't count. "Limit the amount of caffeine and sugary drinks," Dr. Matthew Weissman, an Internist, said. Dr. Weissman says he reminds parents during flu season to make sure kids are getting enough sleep -- whether they're sick or healthy. "Create a bedtime routine, bath, story, pajamas, that sort of calms kids down for sleep," he said.
