Electronically Induced Ideas
from Eklektro Breakbeat of the Week July 10, 2008
Off the Road: Reflections of a Tech-Nomad After 7 years living totally mobile, off the grid and addicted to adventure; I started to wonder if my ideal Eklektro Karavan-tech visions would ever be fully realized. And just how long could i remain dedicated to the incredible task, without the contributions of at least one other full-time kick-ass accomplice? Finding other tech-nomads quickly became the focus; and so i'd orbit the metropolis, video-blogging the bliss i'd encounter with each exodus. I was seeking to inspire, to start a band; and with each technological update that made life more magic.... solar, wireless, and electronic music... we'd be ready to broadcast! Mechanical breakdowns were to be expected, and i'd always find ways to circumvent them. But when i rushed back from Central America in sudden need of a hospital, summer '08 found me unpredictably Off The Road, and reflecting...

A Nomad's Life
from - blip.tv (beta) June 12, 2008
Directed s Life from Director Lynn TrueA Nomad s Life was conceived as part of the Kham Film Project, an association of American and Tibetan filmmakers working together to improve the quality and diversity of knowledge about Tibet by engaging Tibetans in the creation of documentary films. In making A Nomad s Life, Nelson Walker and I partnered with Rabsal, a local Tibetan NGO dedicated to using film and multimedia as a means of Tibetan self-representation. Tsering Perlo, the founder of Rabsal and an emerging documentary filmmaker himself, is a principal collaborator on the project. Perlo grew up in the nomadic community depicted in A Nomad s Life and he provided rare access to this place seldom seen by outsiders.Historically, Tibetan nomads have thrived in an extreme environment where few other humans dared to live. Until China s occupation of Tibet in 1959, the basic patterns of life had changed little since the first nomads domesticated the yak and took to the pastures over 8,000 years ago.But now, unprecedented challenges are confronting this traditional lifestyle. A Nomad s Life captures the struggles of a young nomadic family as their pastoral way of life is threatened by a fast-approaching globalization. The film follows the family of Locho, Yama and their infant daughter (whom they call Jiatomah loosely translated as spiky brown-haired baby ) who spend the summer in the pastures of Jomtod Valley in Tibet s Kham region 15,000 feet above sea level. The Chinese call this region Wu-Zui or 5 Most for its reputation as the highest, coldest, poorest, largest and most remote area in Kham. Neither crops nor trees grow here; only hearty alpine grass sustains the family s herd of yaks the treasured animals that enable Locho and Yama to carve an existence from one of the harshest habitable environments on earth. Environmental degradation has thinned the grasslands and modernization has begun to reveal alluring alternatives to the struggles of maintaining a yak herd. In response, many families have left the pasture for permanent settlement. As Locho and Yama contemplate their future as nomads, they find themselves caught between a deep attachment to the life they know and love, and intense uncertainty over what will be best for little Jiatomah as she grows up in contemporary Tibet. We completed principle photography for A Nomad s Life in September 2007 when Locho and Yama were moving from summer pasture to fall pasture. They have since moved again this time to a semi-permanent mud-brick dwelling near town where they will spend the cold mid-winter months. We anticipate they will return to the pasture sometime in May 2008, right around the time when Jiatomah will have her first birthday. We plan to return to Kham in summer 2008 to continue working on the feature-length version of the film with collaborator Tsering Perlo and to follow up with Locho and Yama.

china kazakh----the last herdsmen
from YouTube :: Tag // second life May 16, 2008
china kazakh----the last herdsmen. Kazakhs, called Hāsàkè Zú in Chinese (哈萨克族; literally "Kazakh people" or "Kazakh nationality") are among 56 minority groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. In China there are two Kazakh autonomous prefectures, the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai, three Kazakh autonomous counties, Aksai Kazakh Autonomous County in Gansu, Barkol Kazakh Autonomous County and Mori Kazakh Autonomous County in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Many Kazakhs in China are not fluent in Standard Mandarin, China's official language, instead speaking the Kazakh language, and they use Arabic script. The Kazakh language is a member of the Turkic language family, as are Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tatar, Uyghur, Turkish, Azeri, Turkmen, and many other living and historical languages spoken in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Xinjiang, and Siberia. Kazakh belongs to the Kipchak (Northwestern) group of the Turkic language family. Kazakh is characterized, in distinction to other Turkic languages, by the presence of /s/ in place of reconstructed proto-Turkic */ʃ/ and /ʃ/ in place of */tʃ/; furthermore, Kazakh has /dʒ/ (alveodental affricate) where other Turkic languages have /j/ (glide). Kazakh, like most of the Turkic language family lacks phonemic vowel length, and as such there is no distinction between long and short vowels. Kazakh was written with the Arabic script during the 19th century, when a number of poets, educated in Islamic schools, incited revolt against Russia. By 1917, the Arabic script was reintroduced, even in schools and local government. nowdays, the Arabic script is still uesd by kazakh living in xinjiang china. The Kazakh exodus from Xinjiang occurred in waves during the 1950s and 1960s after the Communist victory in China. The Kazakhs had settled in the western frontier of China, called Xinjiang, long before the communists took full control in 1949. The initial exodus began in 1950 or the Year of the Tiger, when the victorious Chinese Communist Army took control, not guaranteeing nor overtly denying the Kazakh way of life: tribalism and Islam. Families voted at Barkol and set out to preserve their way of life in the steppes of Kashmir, exiled from their homeland. This initial journey to Kashmir was opposed by the victorious Chinese Red Army as they passed through Chinese territory. The first attack happened at Barkol in Kumul Prefecture and the second near Timurlik. The Kazakh groups that survived fled into Tibet to survive. The victory by the Chinese Red Army was not the only thing that hindered the initial Kazakh exodus; they also suffered illness which killed countless individuals. It took three months for the Kazakhs to cross Tibet and arrive at Srinagar, Kashmir. Of the 400 families that fled China, only 350 arrived at Srinagar in the initial exodus. In 1962, the Kazakhs staged another exodus from Xinjiang. This time the Kazakh and members of other ethnic groups fled to the Soviet Union due to mass riots and communist reforms that again were imposed on the Kazakhs' traditional way of life. from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) May 02, 2008
Hualien Cat Australian Bird was a featured "Kuso" film at the 2008 Urban Nomad Film Festival in Taiwan. The cat portion was shot at Tylor's house in Hualien (a small city on Taipei's east coast) and the bird part was shot in Perth Australia right before the big Australia Day fireworks show. Both occaisions, I (Jason Sedor) just happened to have my camera and ended up witnessing some pretty cool stuff.
