Until the 19th of December 2009, Hauser Wirth Zürich presents an exhibition of new paintings on canvas and works on paper by Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal. Many works in the show relate to Wilhelm Sasnal s first ever feature-lenght film entitled Swiniopas (Swineherd), which he realized in the past year. Swiniopas is an adaption of a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of the same name. Wilhelm Sasnal s film is shot in black and white and set in bleak, rural Poland. It s about a swineherd who smuggles letters back and forth between a farmer s daughter and her lesbian lover. Wilhelm Sasnal was born in Tarnów, Poland in 1972. He lives and works in Krakow. Major solo presentations of his work include ‘Lata walki’, Zacheta Narodowa Galeria Sztuki, Warsaw, Poland (2007); ‘Pintures’,
CaixaForum, Barcelona (2007); ‘Paintings Films’, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2006); Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt am Main (2006); and Kunsthalle Zürich (2003). In November 2006 the artist received the prestigious Vincent Van Gogh Award. A comprehensive solo exhibition of Sasnal’s work is on view at K21, Düsseldorf, until 11 January 2010, and a solo exhibition of recent works will be at Centro de Art Contemporaneo, Malaga, Spain from 28 November 2009 – 24 January 2010. Jenny Holzer is considered as one of the most popular contemporary artists. Holzer is known for her use of words and ideas in public space. In 1982 she publicised her statements and aphorisms ( truisms ) on one of Times Square s gigantic LED billboards, in 2008 she created a site-specific light projection for the newly renovated facade of the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, Switzerland, is now presenting Jenny Holzer s first large sale exhibition in a Swiss museum. The focus is on recent works, some of which have never before been shown in Europe. On display are Jenny Holzer s famous LED installations, combining poetic, socio-critical, and political texts and visual effects, as welll as paintings and sculptures. The exhibition is supplemented by a selection of works the artist has chosen from the Beyeler Collection (Giacometti, Picasso, Malevich, Bacon). The presentation of Jenny Holzer s work is not confined to the museum space. The show extends outdoors to the public space. Jenny Holzer conceived light projections on key buildings and sites in Basel and Zürich. These will only be on view on special nights. The exhibition has been conceived in close cooperation with the artist and the MCA, Chicago, and curated by Elizabeth A. T. Smith and Philippe Büttner. During Frieze Art Fair 2009, The Embassy, a multi-disciplinary group show, presented works by Marco Brambilla, Terence Koh, Rosey Chan, Tom Gallant, Alastair Mackie, Oliver Clegg, Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, Bruce French, Henry Hudson, Michael Lisle-Taylor, Laurence Owen, Karim Rabik, Hugo Wilson and Yarisal Kublitz. Curated by Dellal and Xerxes Cook, the exhibition was intended to be a parody of outmoded cultural diplomacy in the form of an anonymous country’s embassy, a dystopia whose tyrannical government has tested the patience of its people and brought them to tipping point. The show was produced by Alex Dellal s 20 Hoxton Square Projects, in collaboration with Zoom Art Projects. A mixture of painting, sculpture and installation, works featured in The Embassy include a national anthem by the pianist Rosey Chan, a presidential palace built from mud by Alastair Mackie, a flag by Tom Gallant, and former service man, Michael Lisle-Taylor will present his Tournament of the Dirty Nurse, an ornately embroidered boxing ring still covered in the blood, sweat and tears from bouts that have taken place within it. Other works include paintings on old school desks by Oliver Clegg, lungs in three stages of the pulmonary cycle shock, agitation and panic by Hugo Wilson and caricature regal portraits by Henry Hudson in his distinctive plasticine style. (Excerpt from the press release). The Embassy took place at the former residence of the Sierra Leonean ambassador to Britain, 33 Portland Place. Antony Gormley: One & Other / Finale
from VernissageTV art tv on October 21, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
At 9 a.m. on Wednesday 14th October 2009, the last participant of British artist Antony Gormley s One Other project, Emma Burns, stepped onto the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. The 30 year old medical photographer from Darlington is one of 2,400 people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and from all over the UK which have participated in this unique piece of art. They have travelled from as far afield as Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands to Belfast, Northern Ireland to be part of this collective portrait of the UK of 2009. Antony Gormley s One Other has seen a different person take their place on the Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days. The project has been commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts, and supported by Arts Council England. The participants used her hour on the plinth in most different ways: There were activists, raising awareness for causes such as animal welfare, the environment, and human rights; creatives from painters to dancers who brought their art to the plinth; people who promoted themselves or their companies; and participants who simply did nothing. A full list of plinthers profiles can be found at www.oneandother.co.uk. Altogether 2,400 participants were chosen at random by computer algorithm from nearly 35,000 applications received via the website www.oneandother.co.uk and through post. There was no audition process. The only four criteria – participants must be aged 16 or over and must live, or be staying in, the UK, an equal number of men and women were chosen, and the population of the UK was represented proportionally by choosing a certain number of people from each region. Antony Gormley said: “Art should be for everyone, this was an experiment to see whether everyone could be involved in making it. Who can be represented in art? How can we make it? How can we experience it? These are questions that have exercised me for years. I am inspired and given hope by what we have done this last three months. Whatever goes on the plinth hereafter the square will never be the same; the memory of this summer’s living sculpture in all its diversity is indelible.” Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. He has participated in major group shows such as the Venice Biennale and the Kassel Documenta 8. Angel of the North and Quantum Cloud on the Thames in Greenwich are amongst the most known examples of contemporary British sculpture. The Fourth Plinth project is funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England, London. It involves a rolling program of contemporary art commissions to be installed temporarily on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square. Previous projects have been realized by Marc Quinn, Thomas Schütte, Mark Wallinger, Bill Woodrow, Rachel Whiteread. The next work to be installed as part of the Fourth Plinth commissioning process will be a scale replica of Nelson s ship, HMS Victory, in a giant glass bottle, by Yinka Shonibare. Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell / Opening and Performance by Patti Smith

If she ever wondered how many people fit into her gallery space, now Alison Jacques knows. The opening of the current exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell reminded visitors more of a Guinnes Book World Record attempt than a vernissage. The reason for this rush was obviously the announcement that the American singer-songwriter and artist Patti Smith would perform at the opening. VernissageTV captured the event in this video, which is a short version of a full-length version that will be up on our HD page soon. Apart from the exhibition, the video shows Patti Smith performing her song Because the Night in an a capella version with support from the audience. Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell brings together a range of works in a variety of media, including rarely seen collages. For the first time in a European gallery, 5 major early works are on display, a series of collages from 1968-69 when Robert Mapplethorpe was living with Patti Smith at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. Drawing on the Catholic culture of his upbringing, Mapplethorpe was inspired to make shrine-like works out of a broad range of materials, from menʼs underwear to prayer cards. However these works, both formally and substantially, become transformed more into objects of fetish than images of devotion, revealing the incessant influence of his religious background on Mapplethorpeʼs life and art, and his irreverent and rebellious relationship to it. As Mapplethorpe himself said ‘A church has a certain magic and mystery for a child…. It still shows in how I arrange things. Itʼs always little altars.’ Later in his career Mapplethorpe became more renowned for his photography, yet the themes of Heaven and Hell, the sacrehis work. (Excerpt from the press release). In June 2009, conceptual artist John Baldessari received the Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, now the Tate Modern in London dedicates him the most extensive retrospective to date in the UK. John Baldessari: Pure Beauty will bring together more than 130 works and examine the principal concerns of this legendary Californian artist. With humour and irony, Baldessari’s work dissects the ideas underlying artistic practice and questions the historically accepted rules of how to make art. Fascinated by language and meaning, he has always been interested in the connection between working in the visual field and working with words. (Excerpt from the press release). John Bock: The Greased Bendsteering… – Lecture / Fashion Show at HKW Berlin

German artist John Bock s event at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin was announced as a lecture, bearing a rather long title – and turned out to be an entertaining fashion show with weird vogue, underground action and some animals that were not injured. John Bock s show Die abgeschmierte Knicklenkung im Gepäck verheddert sich im weissen Hemd (The greased bendsteering in the luggage gets tangled up with the white shirt) is described by the organizers as a GlitterMotterRun of Quasi Me s. Wrappings bend into analytical diagrams. The animalistic Existo sprays lubing-sparks into the Recipient-Cuboid. Turnaroundround round around from beginning over Now-Time to the end of Later-Time with have hair nice. The same in German: Einen GlidderModderlauf der Quasi-Me s. You don t understand a thing? Don t complain. As art aficionado you should be used to cryptical catalog texts and press releases. But if you know what it means, please send an equally unobscured explanation / translation of it to the VernissageTV HQ. We promise to publish it. Even if it s in the Libyan dialect Muammar Gadafi uses. The lecture itself was entertaining indeed. Although some art professionals complained about being bored by the show. Quote: Real fashion shows are far more exciting and too much fashion, too little John Bock . Well, I m not a frequent guest at Karl s or Tom s shows, so I wasn t bored. That s a lot for me because one of the reasons I love contemporary art is that I m not forced to wait for the concert to be over when I enter a gallery. But yes, there was a little too much fashion and too little John Bock, and as my friend Philippe is Dada in text and person, I wasn t too much impressed by the KnicklenkungDadaBlaba either. Conclusion: The lecture / fashion show was a pleasant surprise, and the cotton swabs, with which I identify him, had also their appearance. John Bock was suggested by Rirkrit Tiravanija for The Spirit of the Haus, the events celebrating the 20th birthday of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. His fashion show has been performed on September 25 and 26, 2009. VernissageTV filmed the performance on September 26, 2009. For this year s edition, Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair moved from Tempelhof s Hangar 2 to the main hall of the former Berlin Central Airport. With the new location, Preview Berlin set up a new, different exhibition concept. The new approach was necessary because of the specific requirements of the new space in the historic building. The fair chose a layout without the classic white wall booths. As a result, the focus is on the fields of sculpture, installation, performance and video. Among the artists presented are Marcel Bühler (Cream Gallery, Berlin), Hesselholdt Mejlvang (Charlotte Fogh Contemporary, Arhus), Thomas Kilpper (Patrick Heide, London), Dominik Stauch (Bernhard Bischoff Partner, Bern), Andrea Lehmann (Anna Klinkhammer, Düsseldorf), Frederik Foert (myVisit, Berlin), Alain Josseau (Sollertis, Toulouse), Dieter Lutsch (Jarmuschek + Partner, Berlin), Stephanie Backes (Loop – Raum für aktuelle Kunst, Berlin). Sarkis is one of the most important Turkish artists. Site points to all the stages that Sarkis career has gone through in the course of half a century. Originally a painter, Sarkis soon expanded the focus of his work to include sculpture as well as audiovisual installations. He participated in Harald Szeemann s famous exhibition When Attitudes Become Form at Kunsthalle Bern in 1969. He has also taken part in Documenta VI (1977) and VII (1982), the Venice Biennale (1993), and several Istanbul Biennials (1987, 1989, 1995, and 2007). He will be taking part in this years Lyon Biennial. In 2010 the artist will be holding two major exhibitions: one at the Georges Pompidou Center for the Contemporary Arts in Paris and one at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Geneva. While the key theme concerns itself with the theoretical question of how photographers view the orders of images, other individual exhibitions are dedicated to related thematic fields that pose our question with particular emphasis: body and youth, war and landscape image, archive and absence. (Excerpt from the press release). On display at Fotofestival Mannheim Ludwigshafen Heidelberg are works by artists such as AES+F, Cao Fei, Thomas Hirschhorn, Peter Piller, Bettina Pousttchi, Sean Snyder, and VVORK. The festival has been curated by Esther Ruelfs, an art historian who specializes in photography, and Tobias Berger, an expert in Asian Pacific art. 3rd Fotofestival Mannheim Ludwigshafen Heidelberg: Images Recalled.
