Filed under: Action, Casting, Comic/Superhero/Geek One of the more interesting comic book projects in the pipeline is an adaptation of Mark Millar's Kick-Ass (title likely to be changed?), directed by Matthew Vaughn. We previously covered the action comedy -- about a high school dork who decides to become a superhero despite not possessing any of the gifts normally associated with superherodom -- here and here. Perhaps hinting at the tone of the eventual film, the first bit of casting was Superbad's Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Though he may seem like the perfect choice to play a dweeb with delusions of grandeur, Mintz-Plasse was cast in a supporting role. A week later, they've cast the lead: it'll be 18 year-old Aaron Johnson, whom you may remember as little Ed Norton in The Illusionist. Joining him will be Nicolas Cage and TV vet Lyndsy Fonseca. Fonseca will play the love interest, while Cage will play the father of Elizabeth Rappe's future daughter, "a vicious, foul-mouthed 11-year-old who chops down criminals with a katana." Apparently he's trained her to do that as part of his quest to take down a druglord. Mark Millar, by the way, is the dude behind Wanted, a comic that was about 250 times crazier than this summer's movie adaptation. I'd like to see Shoot 'Em Up's Michael Davis get a crack at a Millar project, but I'll settle for the ultra-talented Vaughn, who can do both over-the-top violence (see Layer Cake) and elegant movie versions of difficult source material (see Stardust). We have received the official press release from Imagi Studios and Summit Entertainment (who are partnering for the flick) with the full cast for the anime update. Imagi finally found their lead in Freddie Highmore back in February and they have announced that joining Highmore in the cast are Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane, and Eugene Levy. There is no word yet on which characters from the original series will be making an appearance, but I could definitely see Lane doing a respectable job as Hamegg. Astro Boy is the story of a boy robot looking for love and acceptance after being abandoned by his creator. After a Pinocchio-like journey of servitude in a circus, Astro was whisked off to safety by the understanding Professor Ochanomizu. Of course, Astro also spent his time battling mad scientists and out of control robots in between bouts of abandonment issues. This is the mother of all Geeky tag-teams these two got to work together a little on Sin City, and it seems that Grindhouse is the next logical step: Tarantino and Rodriguez joining forces to make a modern exploitation film of the highest order. With a cast consisting of Kurt Russel, Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Naveen Andrews and Freddy Rodriguez, this is a big big big B-movie. Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, and Eli Roth are helping round out the Grinhouse feel by providing trailers for movies that dont exsist. Mobile Movie Minute 5. Ghost Rider starts off silly, but sure packs a punch. Peter Fonda almost pulls off his role as the Devil. Nicolas is far better as the Bonehead Hothead than he is as Johnny Blaze, but what the heck, he rides a mean motorcycle! 4.2 bags of popcorn - this is a fun flick, the kind that's usually reserved for the summer.
