New Zealand

New Zealand

from Travel Guide :: City Guide :: www.CheckMyCity.com :: worldwide video travel community on November 29, 2009
Duration: 109
New Zealand is known in the native Maori language as Aotearoa, often translated as The land of the long white cloud. New Zealand is a country of stunning and diverse natural beauty: Soaring mountain peaks, fiords, lakes, rivers, and active volcanic features. The islands are inhabited many species of unique fauna, including the elusive kiwi, which has become the national symbol. The Maori culture continues to play an important part in everyday New Zealand life, and there are abundant opportunities for the visitor to understand and experience the history and the present day form of Maori life. The country is sparsely populated, but easily accessible. New Zealand has modern visitor facilities, and developed transportation networks. New Zealand often adds an adventure twist to nature, and is the home of jetboating through shallow gorges, and bungy jumping off anything high enough to give a thrill. New Zealand has been called God's own country and the Paradise of the Pacific since the early 1800s. Travellers generally agree New Zealand deserves this description. Lonely Planet named New Zealand the world's top travel destination for the second year running (2003/2004), and it was voted best long-haul travel destination in the 2004 Guardian and Observer’s People’s Choice award. It has won the award in three out of the past four years. At the 2005 Condé Nast Traveller Awards, readers voted New Zealand as the best holiday destination in the world.

Queenstown is a scenic town in the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of the most beautiful regions of Otago and offers year round attractions. The town sits on the edge of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by the Southern Alps. The most remarkable sight is the Remarkables, which is a saw-toothed range of mountains on the opposite side of the lake from the town. Queenstown lies at the outlet to Lake Wakatipu, one of New Zealand's Southern Lakes. It caters for tourists on a wide range of budgets, from backpackers to luxury tourists. In many respects Queenstown can be a tourist trap. However, reasonable prices and bargains can be found for those prepared to look for them. Queenstown is a party town during high seasons. if you plan on getting a good nights sleep, then you might consider staying slightly out of town. It is common to see people on the street up to 5AM in the morning, coming back from the disco or pub. If you are looking for a relaxing scenic holiday, Wanaka (an hour drive) is smaller and more tranquil (with less of a party atmosphere).

Putting the plug back in the gene pool. Why rare breeds may be invaluable for the future of farming

Putting the plug back in the gene pool. Why rare breeds may be invaluable for the future of farming

from Highfield Veterinary Centre Podcast on November 24, 2009

Farm animals as we know them today have been selected for desirable traits or characteristics such as fast growth rate, heavy muscling, good fibre production, good milk production or perhaps temperament. Along the way, some breeds may have been discarded from main stream farming for a variety of reasons, and their numbers have dwindled, perhaps even to the point of extinction. Some domesticated breeds may have returned to the wild, and in doing so returned to a free living state. In New Zealand the guardians of these animals are The Rare Breeds Conservation Society, whose role is to conserve, record and promote these breeds with the particular aim of maintaining genetic diversity within our livestock species. In this interview, I talk with Mike Willis, a spokesman for this society, and himself, a custodian of a number of rare breeds. Have a look at the New Zealand Rare Breeds website at http://www.rarebreeds.co.nz/
