Video: Bottineau Winter Park Prepares for Winter
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on November 27, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
With one of the first snow-less Thanksgivings in recent memory behind us...many are looking toward December for the official start of winter...and perhaps the first major snow. However, that lack of winter weather is making things run a little differently at Bottineau Winter Park. Catherine Ross shows us how the employees are preparing for ski season under some unusual circumstances. All the pieces of the puzzle are coming together at Bottineau Winter Park for the winter season...but looking around this week...one major element is nowhere to be found. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "After a month ago when we had six inches of snow on the ground, I really thought we'd be in business by now." But what seemed like an early start to winter transformed into an unseasonably warm fall...yet still, he admits, it's a bit easier to get last-minute work done outside in above-freezing temperatures, so when the season hits, they're ready. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "Wen the cold weather does get below 20 degrees, we can hit the switches and start making snow as fast as we can. It's kind of like baking a cake. We build the cake first, and we hope mother nature will put the frosting on the top of it." But it's a waiting game until then: Knudson says rushing to make snow on warm ground can create run-off and damage the slopes for the rest of the season, so for now, patience is the name of the game. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "We could have made snow a week ago, but with 50 and 60 degree weather, and the ground still warm, we would have melted from both directions." And though they've had to open a little later in seasons past, Knudson is confident just as many folks will hit the slopes this winter as in years before. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "It's never hurt us to be open a little later; if we build it, they'll come." And if one thing's for sure in North Dakota, it's that winter will *also* come...and Knudson says they hope to be up and running at Bottineau Winter Park by the first week in December. In Bottineau, Catherine Ross, KX News. Knudson says last year the park saw a little less than 10,000 visitors and they hope to top that number this season.

Video: Woman hopes to use Web to catch burglars
from KOB Albuquerque on November 26, 2009

A homeowner in the east mountains has posted a warning on her door for anyone thinking about breaking into her place. She's fired up over the rash of home burglaries and is now working on ways to stop them. Joe vigil is here with our top story. This is the note a burglar would see at one resident's home. The woman who put it up says it's no joke. Breaking into debbie battaglino's east mountain house might be the last home a burglar wants to hit. Asked her to read the note she put up on her door. "beware. Due to the recent break-ins we don not answer the door. If you are a home invader, please leave a contact number for someone to come pick up your body parts." So how serious is she about that threat? "i have a baseball bat a golf club, other assorted incendiary weapons of mass destruction ...i'm not going to be a victim. I am not going to be a victim." Residents tell us burglars just hit three more homes tuesday. 2 in the tablazon subdivision and one home in the sierra vista south area. From january to june -- deputies say burglars hit 70 homes throughout the east mountains. From june to now one hundred homes. That's why battagilino is trying to get organized. Instead of using a little notebook to keep track of suspicious vehicles and people...she wants to get a webpage going where people can report suspicious activity for everyone to see. "where people can coordinate information, not point fingers and accuse people. Just say i saw a vehicle i'm not familiar with, a day, time date tag number." She also hopes law enforcement will share information on the webpage about crime... To see if patterns come up. She hopes that will help curb the break-ins instead of having to take drastic action herself. Residents tell me those break-ins that just happened --happened on trash day. And some wonder if thieves are looking for homes where trash bins sit out all day -- giving the appearance that no one is home. Battaglino actually drives around a puts trash bins away for people.
