I can see the leaves beginning to turn color and the TV is getting turned on a bit more frequently. Fall is coming and with it comes new TV, new music and football. On MPAD#159 I m playing some new music from a couple of folks that have risen back from the ashes of yesterday, Juliana Hatfield and Wayne Hussey. There s also local band the Silent Years. I saw them play last night and I have to say seeing them live is an almost spiritual event. In the middle are a couple of electro-pop/dance tracks that are very infectious. There s TV talk as I cover what I m watching this fall, by the way, I watched 90210 last night and believe it or not, it s good! Reminds me of the old 90210 with a fresh spin. I should have mentioned that I m watching the Shield and the first episode of it s last season was pretty great.music -Juliana Hatfield, Richard Butler This Lonely Love (feat. Host: Duke Eastwood Recently Duke Eastwood was DJ at an L.A. screening of the film "You Weren't There," a documentry about Chicago punk spanning 1977 through 1984. After digging up all relevent records and putting the set together, then listening to its power, he decided the set was too amazing to just be heard that one night in a loud crowded theater; so here it is! Hear tracks from windy city giants such as the Effigies, Strike Under, Naked Raygun, the Mentally Ill, Articles of Fairth, Big Black, and many, many more. After you realize you wish you had been there, go over to www.regressivefilms.com, and check out the film for yourself!

From Toronto Ontario, Canadian foursome Put the Rifle Down seemingly has the incredible talent that allows them to craft non-disposable synth-pop styled masterpieces, which also happened to spark the same hibernating auditory receptors that lept to life when I first heard New Order in the 80s. Architekt is a demo from PtRD s upcoming Selector album which was featured on the first edition of the SXSW 08 compilation of tracks released to festival attendees. Unfortunately the band couldn t attend the festival due to logistical reasons, but do hope to be back for an appearance next year. The artwork for the new album will be pieced together by LA designer BustBright and the record will feature eight songs plus three remixes, hopefully dropping this month on Summer Lovers Unlimited. Host: Duke Eastwood GARAGEPUNK PODCAST #666 Yep, it's the 666th podcast from garagepunk.com! And what else can be said other than Duke Eastwood is going to hell just for this podcast alone, even though he was probably going anyway. No shit, you may actually be offended by this one, and thank god; it's about time. From this point out, we're all devil whorshipers. You are down, arn't you? Don't be a whimp, hit play and get on the guest list to the underworld with the rest of us who know how to have fun.
. . . anyone remember all the 80's music ?? ... not duran duran and devo , but real hardcore stuff mostly from Europe that pretty much started the techno, synth , electronic genre . . . WELL this is my tribute to the era i grew up into . . . if ur from the S F bay area u might remember One Step Beyond in Santa Clara, The Edge in Palo Alto, and Steve Masters on Live 105 and The Quake...(had to split it in 3 parts .... just too damn long)
This is from my archive of old cassette tapes I've had since high school (early 1980s). This is from a tape I found where I had recorded some portions of the "Freeform" program that ran on KWK FM 106.5/AM 13.8 and hosted by John Hutchinson. This program had a HUGE influence on my musical tastes at the time, and if it wasn't for it, I might still be listening to "classic rock."
Industrial Wasteland is among the oldest of all Anything Box songs. It was supposed to be on Peace, but we voted it out. I was secretly thinking it would be on our 2nd album, Worth. That proved to be wrong due to the album s darker leanings, and although I feel the lyrics in Industrial Wasteland reflected Worth s sensibility, the arrangements were too poppy. Somehow, the song seems to have remained stuck in 1988, a twist of time and its solid grip holding it to its own retro condition. And yet, I still love playing it. Why is that? -- Claude S. About Anything Box Some of the loveliest and most cunningly arranged pop music around And yet they still don t receive nearly as much airplay as they deserve. Well, who cares anyway? They certainly don t. What they do care about (and vehemently so) is the art itself. And they love and revere their fans support. And thus here we are. The videos presented here are unique in that the footage to create them comes mostly through fan tapes. Anything Box was working on a film entitled, Fan Tapes and Time Travel , and some of the episodes are indeed on this site. Since then, they have begun to release individual songs from the series, and this is what is presented here. We encourage you to share this music with everyone, and please comment, as this is very appreciated by Claude, Paul, and Dania. And BTW, all this great music is available on iTunes and CDBaby.com. This version of Every Single Day is the Remix that I did back in 1994. The video was directed by Greg Baird, a college student that Dania knew. We sometimes looked at this one a failed attempt to capture the Pop Rave scene that was in Los Angeles. Although we were not part of it officially, we were always invited to play these events. At what was supposed to be the largest, the cops showed up and arrested everyone. Our equipment was thought stolen, but it was later given back to us by a fan that had managed to keep it from the police. Talk about good luck, huh? Heaven60 is a song I wrote about the two absolutes in life: being born and dying. What do we do with the uncertain in-between? Contemplate or experience it? It was also a goodbye to my father who died of Cancer. Aside from that, the meaning is up for debate, which is what songs should do. This was recorded in El Paso at Club 101. The footage was badly damaged, and so I had to re-create the track, using both the vocals from the tape and the original song when the drop outs happen. The extra strange footage was pure chance discovery -- Claude S. When We Lie is a testament to how far some people will go to film a concert. The guy who submitted this footage had five friends with cameras at the show, and the footage was stitched together from all the angles that were shot. The audio was restored as much as we could, and it is quite good. I love the girl close-up towards the end. It always brings a smile to my face This was in Mexico, where shortly after this song, a riot broke out and we had to run for our lives as fans chased us. Dania s mom was with us, too. She thought the whole riot thing was fun -- Claude S.
Yesterday was an unfair whim of mine. I convinced the band to do it as an encore and it almost didn t happen. None of them really knew the chords, we had never rehearsed it. Gary and Dave worked out their parts just seconds before and we went for it. I think it is one of my happiest of moments. I am very grateful to my friend Marcelo for having captured this moment in time We ve never done it since -- Claude S. To my great shock, the late, great Thomas M. Disch committed suicide on July 4, 2008. This was his last face-to-face interview before his death, conducted on June 25, 2008 at his apartment. For more on Disch, start here. His most recent book was The Word of God. Condition of the Show: In memoriam. Author: Thomas M. Disch Subjects Discussed: [List forthcoming] EXCERPT FROM SHOW: Correspondent: I wanted to also ask you about A.J. Budrys, who I know you I saw your LiveJournal where there were many caustic remarks directed his way. But I should point out that when I received this galley well before June 9th, when he died, you referred to him as the late Algis Budrys. Disch: (laughs) Yes! Correspondent: I m wondering if you had some inside dope or if this is another example of your divine powers. Disch: I guess so. I mean, I never know what my divine powers are going to do often, until they ve done it. And this is certainly a case where I had picked the right horse without even knowing. Correspondent: Well, I mean, why did you type the late so early on? I mean Disch: (laughs) Well, for one thing, I didn t know. Correspondent: You didn t know he was alive? Disch: Yeah. I sort of figured it was likely that he was dead. And wishing it to be the case, I just wrote it that way. Correspondent: Or he was dead to you in other words? Disch: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, if I had my druthers, there he is. Photo credit: Flickr
Show kicks off with âDoggy Doggy Doggy.â Darrin and Jim begin the episode by paying tribute to Haley and Jose, and dedicating âFuzzy Puppyâ to them. Afterward, Wayne Michael Reich joins the fray to discuss his role in the film âHi, My Name is Ryan.â Not losing site of the dog theme, the show ends with âFlambeâ (wait, is that about a dog?) and âMy Dog,â another molding oldie from the Sha-Pink vaults.
