The odd thing is, I wrote this novel in 1992 when nobody, including me, had heard of Barack Obama and when book critics wanted bloody racial conflict whenever black and white characters mixed in the pages of a novel. Maybe I was 16 years ahead of the times. Babcock is part of the San Puerco trilogy, which makes it a companion book to Boone Barnaby: same characters (plus a few new ones) and more adventures in the scrappy little town of San Puerco. The book won awards as a novel for children, but it has many adult fans, too. Most of the issues appeal to an adult perspective as well as a child’s, though with different understanding. Welcome Thomas Gideon to the site. Today he s increasing our non-fiction selection with The Inner Chapters, Volume 1: The Inner Chapters journal my own quest to improve in the craft of programming. Each chapter reflects on a specific practice or principle through the lens of my own experiences both as a professional and an enthusiast. The name refers to the Chinese classic of philosophy, the Chuang Tzu. Divided into two sections, the Inner Chapters make up the first part attributed to the philosopher Chuang Tzu himself. The commentaries on the first section, written by his students and others, are known as the Outer Chapters. I hope you will contribute to my Outer Chapters by sharing your own thoughts and experiences on growing as a programmer. Today we re releasing a newly remastered edition of Mike Luoma s Vatican Assassin. Why a remastered version? Mike says: Back in September of 2006, I began podcasting Vatican Assassin as part of my Glow-in-the-Dark Radio podcast. Learning about digital audio and podcasting as I went along, the recordings were good, but in retrospect could have been better. In a misguided attempt at tightening the audio was also severely edited throughout the book. These recordings turned into Vatican Assassin on Podiobooks.com in 2007, and they ve been downloaded over 106,000 times now. But when I finished the third book in my trilogy Vatican Abdicator earlier this year, and as I began to go through my files for upcoming downloadable audiobooks coming from Podiobooks.com (more info on that later), it became clear I d learned a lot in the intervening three years since I d recorded Vatican Assassin it was time for a new edition! I rerecorded the first ten chapters of the book coming from a radio advertising background where you try to fit as much as you can into 30 seconds, my early reads were just too fast. The rest of the reads were fine, but the editing reflected my commercial background as well, there was no breathing room, no spaces! So I went back to the original source files for the rest of the book and re-edited them, restoring and/or adding breathing room to the reads. My noise reduction techniques have also improved over the years, so the entire book has been redone with improved (less harsh, more accurate) noise reduction as well. Sounds good to me.
