In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch discuss: Blockbuster s decision to select Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Chia-Lin doesn t think we should write off HD-DVD yet as the porn industry is still a strong supporter. Steve still thinks that shiny discs full of video are irrelevant. John thinks he s only half right: owning content is very different than renting it. A big week for Yahoo: Is there a Yahoo deal in the works? Who will be involved and what might the structure look like? Some people think it might involve Newscorp swapping MySpace for a 30% stake in Yahoo which would value MySpace at $12.3 Billion. (Excuse me!? Come again!?) Terry Semel steps down as CEO, Jerry Yang steps up. John thinks it s a way to portray the Yahoo that once was. If nothing else, it s good for employee morale and their ability to attract talent. Lonelygirl15 once again using product placement as a monetization strategy. This time with Neutrogena. She ll still be lonely, but with good skin. We think this bodes well for niche content and UGC especially for this demographic as teens watch more online video than any other demographic according to the results of a new study. Fans of VuGuru s Prom Queen (the production company founded by Michael Eisner) number in the tens of thousands based on the show s MySpace profile. Is this relevant? Veoh creates a browser-like (media center-like?) online application that retrieves video streams from around the Internet and presents them for simple, easy playback. Joost is seeking to embed itself in hardware from TV and set-top box makers. We re keeping our eye on Joost. We think it will be one of the only VOD plays that s scalable, thanks to its peer-to-peer architecture. Steve and Chia-Lin (and to some degree, John) are perplexed at the Web 2.0 / Native App dichotomy of the iPhone. What s the video format for YouTube Mobile? (Not the iPhone YouTube Mobile , but the YouTube Mobile for us iPhone-less peasants ) The Open Mobile Technology Forum is asking technology companies to agree on a broadcasting standard for mobile video. The problem with that request? The term broadcast. Don t give us broadcast on our phones - give us video on demand! Our wine this week is an incredible Amarone that Chia-Lin brought.
