Some sounds for New Zealand for your pleasure. This release comes via the netlabel, Lo-Kiwi. I found it on the hiddenplace music blog. The release is called Tender Pecking. Many songs about owls. I like owls. There are some excellent tunes on the release. I'm looking forward to spending more time with Owltree and Lo-Kiwi. Owltree - Daylight is Not for Owls

I said a boom, wakka chikka, wakka chikka, boom. Oh, man is this a great track from ccMixter.org that was posted to the site on Friday. Here at Camp BSWC, we are fond of our Sex and Space theme. This tune fits the bill on both accounts. Starting with the very velvety guitar sample posted by Victor Fourstones, along with the luscious spoken words from Marika, aka essesq, Spinmeister pulls together an extremely sexy number that is so hot you might forget the summer humidity. At least I did. [Update 7/23/08: The preceding paragraph is in error. Marika is responsible for "imádlak" and essesq bringing the 'pella to the table. I regret the error.] This selection should definitely be in consideration for the Wakka Chikka, Wakka Chikka, Porn Music for the Masses, vol. 3 (if one ever materializes). Some bass, some drums, some jazz and some just so. This is a fantastic track from a recent anniversary compilation released by the netlabel, 12rec. The signature of this release is the mix of instrumentation and styles. A lot of organic sounds mixed in with the electronics. This track is has a nice, building jazz push that is heavy on the piano, bass and drums. Really excellent. Go to the release page and sample the wares...you are bound to find something you like. Go with this one. It really develops into an amazing piece of electronic music. Klipp is Hector Zarate and Jorge Soriano. This live track is from a Discos Konfort release called Ciudad de Mexico. Discos Konfort is a netlabel devoted to Mexican electronic music. They have some marvelous releases. I was reviewing their catalog and stumbled on this live track. I've listened through it three times and decided it was time I shared. Klipp - cs (Live @ Ciclo XT)

Well, damn it, I'm going to do it. I'm unsure of the license behind this download from Lushy's site, but here it is anyway. They have two tunes posted at their website, lushy.com. I'm digging on this little disco ditty...not to mention that it goes along with our unspoken sex and space theme here at BSWC. Lushy features a very good friend of mine, Andy Sodt-we go back to high school, by god. If you hang in Seattle, check them out. Lushy - Spaced Out

Well, how about that, two posts on the same night. There is a lot of great music out on the net. Followers of BSWC will recognize our bias towards the mixters at ccMixter. One mixter has always intrigued us and his name is Cezary Ostrowski. This is a mysterious piece...haunting and beautiful. Ostrowski is using the entrancing vocals of Shannon Hurley who has issued a call for remixes using a cappellas from her “Ready to Wake” album. His work here is brilliant. Thanks to Spinmeister for including it in ccMixter's Editor's Pick section. Cezary Ostrowski - We are in love (very deep mix)

The Dutch netlabel, On-Mix Productions just posted their 100th release and its a doozy. It is called VA-The best ON-Mix tracks according to Kodjax [onmp100] They asked DJ Kodjax to pick the top 41 tracks from their previous 99 releases. I'm always up for a compilation so I put my ears to the metal. I found a lot of variety, but with the unrelenting beat theme going on throughout. You will definitely have to pick and choose your favorites...everyone will have a different reaction. I have several that have really struck me and interestingly enough, they are new to me. I have some familiarity with On-Mix and Kodjax introduced me to some really outrageous stuff. Thanks. There will probably be more from this release in the feed. Stay tuned. Why I like Netlabels so much! Why I like Netlabels so much!

July 11, 2008

Netlabels are Fortune Cookies | Here and than, I ask myself: What is so fascinating about netlabels, that I stayed in touch all over the years? Why am I so excited and keep digging into the wild woods of netlabelism? Isn t it exhausting digging through 5 Gigabytes of music to find only one row diamond? Yes, it is. But you have to cut the shit everywhere, sometimes a really huge pile. But when you find those nuggets, you re excited that musicians allow you to spread the music, the vibes and show them legally to your friends. But there are still more reasons why netlabels are amazing, read on! Why I like netlabels so much! Netlabels invite me to spread their music for free and let me make propaganda not only by mouth, but with music itself! If I do an interview with a netlabel or if I write about netlabel-music, I always can attach music to make my articles sound! A small vinyl label produces a limited copies of a release. If the release is sold out, it s sold out - Basta! A netlabel keeps its backcatalogue online - hopefully forever! Even dead netlabels still can be heard in their tomb over at archive.org! Free Culture and Gift Economies are an utopia, but more and more this movement is speeding up, thanks to the internet. Netlabels are a big part of this movement. Have I forgotten any important reasons? Please give the critics some proove And here are some - hopefully - excellent examples to proove my points: With each netlabel music compilation I am able to make propaganda for musicians and netlabels I like. Please download them :) Read articles about Netlabels like Camomille, Broque or Dharmasound and listen directly to their music! If a music label closes its gates, the music no more available. But sleeping netlabels like subsource.de don t operate but keep their identity live, visible and can still be experienced while dreaming. There are netlabels which had an impact, which where long gone. Thanks to the archive.org and scene.org-shrines they are still available like Textone, Tokyo Dawn or Please Do Something. Just read and listen on Phlow-Magazine.com, dig the wonderful nerdy netlabel directory over at netlabels.org or feed your download-manager with music from www.archive.org/details/netlabels. Once again: Have I forgotten any important reasons? Please tell me :) I update the list then!

Here is something new from the Foot side of the Bumpfoot netlabel. Bumpfoot is a netlabel based in Japan that has two sides. One is the Bump which features music that is more uptempo and beat oriented. The Foot side of the label is more laid back and relaxing. This is what we find with Jupiter Makes Me Scream. The release is called Tuesday Morning Hurricane EP and was posted at archive.org on Sunday, July 6th. It took me a couple listens to catch up with the beauty of these five tunes. I picked one to share, but I recommend listening to the complete release in order. They work with and compliment each other. Tuesday Morning Hurricane EP was produced by Karolis Buržinskas. He is the Lithuanian behind Jupiter Makes Me Scream. Enjoy this release. Jupiter Makes Me Scream - Alinai

Another blocSonic release hit the net last night. It is a good one. Perhaps a little quieter than some, but there are some fantastic cuts on this compilation. This Trondheim tune is from an Aerotone release called Zum Abschied (AER013). Aerotone is a netlabel with the catch phrase, "welcome to aerotone. we are a netlabel and we love melancholic music." This gives you an idea of what to expect from this track. Like other Trondheim efforts, this one has a strong classical feel to go along with chill beats and gentle atmospherics. I've posted material included on blocSonic compilations in the past (last week, as a matter of fact) and really appreciate the work that blocSonic impresario, Michael Gregoire has put into the effort. June 27, 2008

The notes at archive.org talk about The Harvey Girls' ability to "...weave sweetly delicate melodies into hauntingly evocative soundscapes, creating a seamless fusion of pop and sonic experimentation..." and I can hear it, yes I can. This is a truly innovative release that totally works. I can hear where I've been and where I'm going--if that makes any sense. Guitar and pop lyrics with some very original touches...I would like to hear more. The release is self-titled and appears on the imaginary netlabel. The Harvey Girls - Good Morning Bubblegum

I've been wanting to post this for a few days now and finally have a moment to get it done. You need to listen to this tune. Channel 3000 have a number of releases out on the Glam Slam netlabel. Holiday and Ice Cream is on a release called Siesta. I love the sampling and the pure fun of this tune. It is quickly becoming my summer anthem. Channel 3000 - Holiday and Ice Cream

New this week: netBloc Volume 14 (Kills 99.9% of Bacterium Poppus Radiolus!) The netBloc volumes are compilations put together by Michael McGee at his site blocSonic. McGee has really devoted himself to promoting the netlabel, copyleft music scene and in the process has captured and documented some rare finds. He is meticulous in the preparation of liner notes and artwork, as well as full and complete permissions and licensing. This is no small effort. Volume 14 has some really great material. There are ten tracks, but the first track really grabbed me when I gave it a spin. This tune was originally released on Wakka Chikka Wakka Chikka - Porn Music For The Masses Vol. 2, a February 2008 release from WM Recordings. John Cage samples in a sexy milieu that is full of little musical surprises. Very cool. Mikrosopht - Very Deep Pleasure (With John Cage)

So, Creative Commons has put an RFP on the streets offering to sell ccMixter. I heard about it on Friday from Jon Phillips via Tweeter. This morning I looked at what Victor Stone, ccMixter's principal administrator had to say about the prospect. Essentially, CC is looking to get out of the social networking business, something in which, they acknowledge, they have little expertise. My impression is that the RFP goes to some length to protect the resource. My fingers are crossed. Meanwhile, I took a gander at the site and, as usual, found some amazing work posted. I was quite taken by this remix by DURDEN. It has a ethereal quality that marries some strong vocals by Amelia June with incredible work by ccMixter regular Trifonic. Durden’s epic treatment surrounding Amelia June’s sorrowful vocal track from Trifonic’s masterful “Emergence” album is a symphony for the new millennium. Surrounding pained sadness with determined power, gentle strings giving way to powerfully melancholic guitars, soaring and circling above a rhythmic foundation made of pure rock. If you haven't already delved into the musical treats at ccMixter, then now is the time to visit the site and see for yourself. DURDEN - Broken (DURDEN Version)

It is hot here. Hot, hot, hot. I'm posting from a shady porch surrounded by trees. I'm listening to an excellent tune that seems as if it was created for the very purpose of creating calm and keeping cool. I found Das Kraftfuttermischwerk at scene.org which is a tremendous source for great copyleft music. I probably don't go there enough, but the user interface is rough and finding stuff can be difficult. Usually I find myself at scene.org after following a link from a netlabel or other front-end source. Das Kraftfuttermischwerk have excellent bio materials at their MySpace page, here is an excerpt: "Born in 1977 and 1976 Nico Wawersig and Ronny Kraak grew up in eastern Germany – the Wall casting a cloud over Berlin. At the time electronical music was unfamiliar, for cultural activities were of governmental concern."Enjoy these opening days of Summer. Stay cool. I have enjoyed Sigfried Gautier in the past and he has been featured before on these pages, but all of that material was from Jamendo. This wonderful little tune was recorded years ago (November, 1999) and appears at archive.org. I love the smoky mystery that develops as it goes along. Timeless. The name of the release is Deux mille ans de bonheur. Hailing from France, Gautier has played with Psychonada and Creme Brulee. And, as I discovered in my first CC posting in several months he has material waiting to be discovered-one of the exciting things about this gig is the discovery. Hidden Techno-House-Treasures RecoveredHidden Techno-House-Treasures Recovered

Embed our player or listen in PopUp! Five Excellent Free Techno-House Tracks | From time to time I stumble upon netlabel-releases which don t convince me with the whole release. Unfortunately you discover sometimes on these albums true hidden treasures. What to do? Being picky? Right! Otherwise you would miss some really great tunes for your ears. Tosol - Trip around Midnight EP (Auflegware) German sound-engineer Tosol enjoys playing with sounds and tricky beats. His Trip around Midnight EP is a Techno EP where Minimal meets some Breakbeat-trickery. All tracks are slightly dirty and what I like best, is how Tosol twists beats and sounds. Unfortunately not the whole EP convinced me, but his track Format 2000 is a monster. The track reminds me a bit of Funk Phenomena by Armand van Helden but is much more techy and stands for itself. Selffish - Splash Selffish is one of the netlabel-scene-veterans who already released his music years ago - especially on Thinner. On www.leibniz.ru he published a marvellous and cosy House-Tune called .Splash . This production is a true sweet spot. Open up and let some relaxed sounds into your home. glander - shakershoes (clear-cut-records) Glander is the labelhead behind the fabulous Yuki Yaki Netlabel. Over the years Glander develloped his own style of deep and relaxed House inbetween Dub and Techno. One of his best releases is his Vate -EP for 1Bit Wonder. shakershoes continues his quest in producing dubby melodic slow-motion groovers. Get on the bass for a relaxed ride and maybe you want to enjoy the whole compilation on clear-cut-records. k-jano - evolution (no-response) On evolution you find three tracks. All tracks are nice, but the title-track is the real hammer. evolution is a sunny tune with a melodic grooves and a trance-feeling. You can trip on this track the whole day and cool down after a busy day. Check out the whole EP at the Techno-House Netlabel no-response. Leavemotte - Steps for Kids (Ne Rnx Mix) Fragment Music from Russia is one of the well-designed website. I like the colors and the technical look of the website. The sound is similiar: clear, techy and well-produced. One of my favorite tracks to date is still the wonderful TechHouse Remix for Leavemotte done be Ne Rnx. The production of Step for Kids is melodic, deep and very groovy for a TechHouse-production.

Note to Biotic: When in doubt, check the editor's picks at ccMixter...oh, wait, I already have that note... No duh, the amazing stuff that the ccMixter site brings forward every day is simply incredible. I went to visit today and found this absolute gem. Ditto Ditto has already been featured on these pages and this little ditty, created in collaboration with Barbarella. It was posted on Sunday: "This song has had many lifes (remixes), but, recently, Barbarella wanted to sing, wanted to try. So i’ve said..Ok, let’s give to this song another life. Barbarella had never sung before that, it’s the first time for her, to sing in a microphone. I’ve bought a new microphone for this occasion and we have recorded the voices last Friday, in only 2 or 3 hours..and after, i’ve played a new arrangement. If you are interested, we have uploaded the acappella and the lyrics of Ani Casals on the Barbarella’s page. Hope you’ll enjoy our first musical collaboration."Like I said, amazing. Man, this song has been haunting me all week. I've been at a content management show in Boston all week. Big time corporate types realizing that all this 2.0 stuff has relevance in their world. While riding on the shuttle buses between the convention center and my hotel, I lost myself in a playlist that included some tunes from a Alpinechic release called Kill Alpinechic. I'm so glad that the release included the song "Du und Ich". I just played it for my partner and she wants it in her workout playlist right away. Perhaps you will feel the same. Followers of the blog will recognize alpinechic. Artists from the Swiss label that have appeared in this space include Tim and Puma Mimi, Freiraum, Pureape. They have a nice model of online CC releases and physical releases. And, if I was anywhere in Switzerland, you can bet that I would be at their live shows, too. Du und Ich - Goldmund
