Mobile Research Station no.1

10365282 (2009, 1 MB, 14 sec) 10366629 (2009, 7 MB, 1:26 min) Here s the blurb: In a wilderness at the heart of Berlin a strange apparition has landed. Simon Faithfull’s Mobile Research Station no.1 is a curious hybrid – half hi-tech Antarctic Research Station / half rusty-broken-dumpster. Using a standard building-waste container as its basis, the station nevertheless forms a luxurious designer-pod provided for an eccentric set of researchers. Rather than researching the frozen wastes of Antarctica or the moons of Saturn, the invited artist/researchers have begun their investigation into the surrounding wilderness and urban zones of uncertainty that still lie at the centre of Berlin. There initial findings and questions can be found in this blog as and when they happen. I really liked Simon Faithfull s recent show at the BFI. He does something genuinely witty engaging with the kind of play-acted science * that seems to be so in vogue with artists at the moment. This project has similar premises but it doesn t resonate in the same way. Of all the work up on the site these two little movies by Tim Knowles detained me the longest although it s a shame they weren t made with more care (perhaps, though, there s a deluxe DVD edition for sale somewhere along the line..) They do look nice though. * It sounds entirely dismissive but it s not meant to be. Well, not entirely. If I had to enlarge I d say it was an attempt to enlist a kind of sympathetic magic whereby some of the presumed authenticity of science rubs off on the artists work. But of course because we re all ironists now we re all quite aware that there s a kind of Tati-ish, childlike going-through-the-motions-of-science actually going on ( ooh those artists!) presumably it s in this disjuncture that the art purportedly emerges. With Faithfull (and Knowles) the results at least are visually engaging and to an extent affecting if not particularly deep. OK. Fine. But just how many times round do we go before it becomes the most painful of clichés?

to the young, youth (195?/2008, 13 MB, 2:04 min) Poignant beautiful work from DVblog contributor Brian Gibson gently quirkily re-configuring footage shot by his late grandfather on a European visit in the 50s. Brian s work is always striking, always affecting, but the secret extra ingredient is the luminous intelligence underlying everything he does.

Sebastian Hernandez - DIY or Die #2 – Ladyfest

Ladyfest (2009, 46 MB, 4:39 min) Second in Sebastian Hernandez neat documentary series on DIY/alternative lifestyles. I like the genuine respect empathy Hernandez shows for his subjects, which doesn t, however, preclude honest three dimensional film-making. Once again Hernandez technical skills are evident (But not in a look at me! kind of way) In particular I love the jumpy camera work/edit in the second interview, which manages to be aesthetically pleasing without detracting from the actual substance of the interview indeed it adds to it.) Looking forward very much to seeing the third!

Bowl (2009, 2 MB, 1:52 min) Bowl/Glass (2009, 2 MB, 1:01 min) Bowl/Flower/Vase (2009, 3 MB, 57 secs) Little River (2009, 2 MB, 1:00 min) Recommended to us by the sublime Sam Renseiw who, when he speaks, we listen. Nonetheless I had some difficulties in coming to grips with this. Sam tells me it relates to some current You Tube thing whereby people throw ping-pong balls into various receptacles with a high degree of accuracy. Clearly I should stay in more. So in this case the balls are substituted by a species of cookie, apparently known in Denmark as chamberlains . (I asked Sam exactly what a chamberlain was. He says: Chamberlains is an odd translation of kammerjunker that can both be a chamberlain and danish cookie/biscuit. It is usually consumed in summer with koldskål (Fridge buttermilk with vanilla and lemon flavour.)) Here s an interview with Dom Cheverti, here s his site here s the whole sequence.

Armed with nothing but thrift-store suits, the Yes Men lie their way into business conferences and parody their corporate targets in ever more extreme ways basically doing everything that they can to wake up their audiences to the danger of letting greed run our world. Gas Zappers by Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung
from DVblog on October 23, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
Gas Zappers (2007, 61 MB, 5:45 min) “My friend Gemma advises me to create a video in order to design the game characters and figure out how the game should go so I did it. The video is done and I would love to show it to all of you guys but it all of a sudden got in the 2008 Sundance Film Festival so unfortunately I cannot show you now due to the contract. Please wait a bit. Synopsis Gas Zappers is a short animation about climate change. The main character, the ironically overappropriated and fuzzy polar bear, abruptly finds itself in a position to save its home living environment through dextrous maneuvers in an Al-e Gore-ical world. The idiom of the video game is exploited to challenge and illuminate the simplistic notion of quick fixes to environmental issues. Aesthetically, graphical and musical styles from the glory days of video games conjure the triumph and delight of virtual success. As the bear progresses with celebrity companions through different climate change scenarios such as Venice underwater, confrontations with bulldozers, and anthropomorphized killer oil derricks, it narrowly succeeds each time thanks to its renewable energy defenses. A narrative unfolds that, like the artists’ previous works, waggishly interrogates the spectacular mode of ecological policy. By Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung. Music by Noah Vawter.

Truth or Consequences (2009, 90 MB, 10:03 min) Very nicely made and engaging documentary, first of three, all of which we hope to feature here, by Sebastian Hernandez, amply fulfilling earlier promise. Technically this work is even more assured. I have to say personally I preferred the politics of his earlier work. (Not that I assume Hernandez views are necessarily to be identified with those of his subjects, so, to put it better, I preferred the folks in the earlier movies) There s more context here.

Video Cat (2009, 11 MB, 1:34 min) Aguas De Maio (2009, 9 MB, 1:19 min) Two videos from earlier this year by Regina Célia Pinto, who has taken big time to the short video form with -naturally- gusto, skill imagination. One is a fetching bit of painterliness and the other a gentle slice of observation (not, of course, just of the cat). She s extraordinarily good at conjuring atmosphere. Regina previously on DVblog. ******************************************************************************************************** PS You should also check this out, particularly if you re an academic, curator or similar. Not only an act of huge personal generosity on Regina s part but David Daniel s project is a magical, sui generis affair absolutely must be preserved propagated
