U.S. Working Conditions: Surprising Findings

U.S. Working Conditions: Surprising Findings

from recent posts tagged global - blip.tv (beta) on November 18, 2009
Duration: 436
Today, ten percent of America s workforce is unemployed, and many more workers are facing underemployment or enduring poor working conditions and inadequate supports and benefits. Jody Heymann, founder and director of the Project on Global Working Families and a professor in the Faculties of Medicine and Arts at McGill University, has written a new book entitled Raising the Global Floor (to be released on November 17th). It is based on an eight-year study examining the working conditions faced by 55,000 households in seven countries on five continents. The book compares working conditions and labor laws in the United States with those in 189 other countries. In her research, Jody found that 163 nations guarantee paid sick leave, but the U.S. is not one of them. This is just one of several disturbing findings about the benefits of US workers compared to those in other countries. Legislation regarding mandatory paid sick leave is currently being considered in Congress, but other needs (maternity/paternity leave, breaks for breastfeeding, time off to take care of a sick child, spouse or parent) are still unanswered. Episode 118 - Great Lakes Eliot Ness

Episode 118 - Great Lakes Eliot Ness

The Eliot Ness is a Vienna style lager - a lager that maintains crispness while at the same time allowing some darker malts to make their way in to the beer. (Sam Adams Boston Lager is the most widely known Vienna style lager in the US.) This particular lager is named after Eliot Ness, the famous leader of The Untouchables, and it is both ironic and fitting. While Ness spent much of his career enforcing prohibition, he was also well known to appreciate a libation or two. As if that weren't enough of a reason to put him on a bottle, the mother of the owners of Great Lakes was Eliot Ness's stenographer! What's that? How's the beer? It would make Eliot Ness proud, we think.

In case you were under the weather, here's what you missed this week. As gay supporters marched on Washington, President Obama promised gay equality. Hillary Clinton denied she'd run for President again, Maine Senator Snowe gave her support to the healthcare bill and California passed a bill recognising some same sex marriages. A 6 year old Delaware boy was suspended over a fork whilst researchers found golf balls in Loch Ness. A South Carolina Priest had a big win at poker, Catholics blessed a new Hawaiian Saint, Mike Tyson opened up to Oprah and a Florida teen turned a burrito into a weapon.
