Novemeber 20th, 2009District One Semifinals Neshaminy- 22North Penn- 35 Knights stop 'Skins in playoff contest On the road for tonight s game, the Skins traveled a short distance north to take on the North Penn Knights in a District One quarter-final playoff match-up. And with the venue moved to Souderton s new turf field just in time for the kickoff (due to some wet weather over the last few days), the word was sent out quickly to allow for the change in location and driving directions. Be that as it may, and as usual, loyal Neshaminy fans were out in force to watch these two SOL and D1 Gold Standard teams meet in the post-season for the third straight year. Plus with the 11-0 Lansdale squad seeded number one in the district and in the top three in most state polls, and the 9-2 Skins in the top five in SEPA and in and out of the Top Ten statewide rankings during the season, this one looked to be a barnburner between these two rivals. And as usual, as the game on the field is where our attention should be focused, let s get right to it. Stepping out for the coin toss, Neshaminy showed some style as they wore their red home pants and white away game jerseys for a bit of a throwback look. And it apparently helped with the coin toss as the Creek Kids called it right and elected to receive. With the kickoff in the end zone, the Schmidtmen started at the twenty and moved it out to the 37 before stalling out. Bryan Reice s punt was then downed by Ariel Hoffman at the North Penn 29 where the Knights offense began their first effort. From there, and although forced into several key plays including a fourth and five at the Blue and Red 20, the Knights drew first blood and a 6-0 lead after their two-point conversion failed. After the kick it was the Skins starting off at their own 27 after the return by Ricky Williams. And trying some magic on a third-down play, Bryan Dean lofted a halfback pass that was intended for Williams but which was intercepted at mid-field with Lansdale then back in business at that spot. A couple of plays saw the ball moved inside the thirty when the first-quarter ended and the second began. After changing sides, it was the Knights set up at the 25 with a third and four. Looking sharp, a couple of plays later they put it in for the second time to make it 12-0 which is the way it stayed after another two-point conversion failed. With the following kickoff taken by Dean, he returned it to the 25. From there it went to third and seven when Charlie Marterella nailed Dean for a big gain to the North Penn 43. Some nice running took it down to the 13 where Marterella located Rick Brebner through the air for six. Ricky Domico s PAT was good and the game tightened up at 12-7. With Neshaminy then trying an onsides kick, North Penn alertly recovered at their own 38 where they then started that drive with four minutes in the half. Two minutes later, and courtesy of two nice passes, the Knights scored again to make it 18-7. Yet again, the two-point attempt was short. With Williams then taking the ball out to the 22 on the kickoff, the Skins were back in business. But getting themselves in a jam in a hurry, a Titus pass was picked off and returned to the 30 where North Penn s offense came back out on the field. But some tough defense by the Skins held the Knights to a 38-yard field goal. And with not much time remaining after that, the teams headed for the lockers with North up 21-7. With the Knights receiving to start the second half, they began at their own 40 after the short kick. And picking up where they left off, they covered the distance in no time to make it 28-7 after the PAT. Following the North Penn score, a very pretty return of the kickoff by Williams had the Skins starting at their own 45. But in no time at all another Neshaminy pass was picked off and returned to the 25. A couple of quick plays later saw it 35-7 for the Knights. After the next Blue Men kickoff found the end zone, it was Neshaminy starting at its own 20. Showing some life, a couple of nifty passes and determined runs had it down to the North Penn one with a goal to go. But it was not to be as the pill came loose and was recovered by the Knights where they set up shop. Holding them at that spot, North Penn punted and following a nice return, the Indians had good field position at the 22 as the third-quarter rolled over to the fourth. Going to fourth and three at the 15, Titus nailed Brebner who made a circus grab before coming down in the end zone. Going for two, it was Titus to Dean as the score then showed 35-15 in North Penn s favor. Once again, the short Neshaminy kick gave North Penn a good spot at their 40. Forced to punt after a three and out, Dean fair caught the rock at the Moleskinner 30 where Langhorne s offense started it off with 8:52 left in the game. But almost immediately another loose football was recovered by the Knights at mid-field. Going to fourth down, Lansdale punted away. Dean caught it at the ten and with a nice return and a late hit, it was first and ten for the Blue and Red at the 45. Two plays later it was down to the 21 on a great pass by Titus to Frank Csaszar. Then not much later, it was Corey Majors from one yard out after a couple of short passes fell incomplete from that spot. With Domico on the money it went to 35-22. Trying another onsides kick, it didn t quite make it ten yards as North Penn recovered at the Neshaminy 49. From there it was just a matter of time before the clock expired to end the game. First of all, we offer congratulations to the North Penn Knights. They played a tough and mistake-free game tonight to push their mark to 12-0. And now moving on to a District One Championship Series game next week against Avon Grove, we wish them the best. Next, we sadly write that the season has now ended for the 2009 Redskins as their run in the playoffs stops at two games with their overall record going in the books at 9-3; however, we do salute them for what they accomplished this year as it was almost a brand new team that first entertained us against Souderton way back in early September. And entertain us they did as another group of fine young men made us proud as they did their part to add to the Neshaminy story all season long. No doubt about it, we ve got plenty of terrific memories of their efforts on the gridiron over the past 12 games. So thank you Redskins! Especially the seniors who are moving on as we ll miss you guys -- good luck in all you do. And we also remind you to never forget the part you played in making it just as true today as it was when Harry Franks first penned it some 60 years ago: Time will never dim the glory of the Neshaminy Redskins. See you next year. *Taken From Neshaminyfootball.com

November 13th, 2009 Neshaminy - 24Abington - 17 Rematch goes to `Skins in playoff opener On a blustery, damp and rainy Friday the 13th night, the 7-2 Ghosts of Abington made their way to Langhorne for the Preliminary Round of the District One Championship Series. And as the 8-2 Tribe was seeded at the number eight slot in the 16 team arrangement, with fellow SOL-National Conference member Abington at number nine, it couldn t have been called as much closer going in to kickoff. Well, that is unless we look back just a month or so ago to that 28-24 thriller that went to the visitors at their home field (which surely added an extra element to what was being billed as the Game of The Week around the district). So with the table set for a humdinger, let s dig right in on this one as scholastic grid fans in Lower Bucks surely couldn t have been more ready for the feast these two clubs promised to deliver! With the visitors winning the toss they elected to receive the ball. And after a bobbled catch, a Ghost was forced to fall on it on the 22 where they set up shop. Moving it out well, Abington took it to mid-field before running out of gas. Following the punt, Neshaminy then took over at its 26 before going back to the 21 on an offsides call. But failing to convert, Neshaminy went into its own punt formation only to see the kick blocked with the ball then returned into the end zone by a Ghost defenseman. With the PAT good, the visitors were suddenly up 7-0. Kicking off after that, the Blue and Red set up on their own 35 after the return. Stitching together an almost eight-minute drive in the drizzling and misty environment, the Redskins moved it down to the enemy ten before stalling out. From there it was Ricky Domico popping a 24-yard field goal to make it 7-3 as the first-period was drawing to a close. After the Neshaminy kickoff, a solid return by Abington and holding penalty against the Skins, the Ghosts were in business at the Indian 44-yard marker as the teams switched sides for second-quarter action. But with the Schmidtmen defense stiffening, Abington punted after failing to make any headway with the ball hitting the end zone. As the rock was then brought back to the twenty, that s where the Skins took over. From there Neshaminy moved it out to mid-field before a Tribe running back lost the handle. With nothing but Ghosts in the vicinity, the ball went back to the Abington group. The rain was now making it tough for both sides, though, as it was a three-and-out for Abington. Then after the punt, it was Neshaminy starting at the three-yard line with six-minutes in the half. Not able to take it out of the red zone, it was Bryan Reice back to punt again. And under pressure, the kick was short and high with Abington then starting off on the Skins 26. Not getting it very far, Abington salvaged a 30-yard field goal to make it 10-3. But the Creek Kids refused to mail it in as Bryan Dean then returned the following kickoff to the Abington 45 where Langhorne put its offense back on the field. From there it was some passing and running that had the ball down to Abington s ten with fewer than 30 seconds to go. And deciding that the time for poking and prodding was over, Corey Majors then barreled up the middle for the score. Domico nailed the PAT and the score went to 10-10 which is how it remained as the team headed for the lockers. After the break, and short kick, it was the Skins starting off at their own 36. And showing they could smack and bang around with the best of them, the Creek Kids burned eight minutes off the clock on a very pretty 74-yard drive for six. And despite the wet weather, it was Charlie Marterella finding Ricky Brebner for the last 12 yards. Domico didn t miss his shot either as it then went to 17-10 for the Old Lincoln Highway gang. Kicking it away to the Ghosts, this time it was Abington moving a bit slow as their offense just couldn t find a gear. Going three and out, the punt from the 13 was returned to the 25. And on first down it was Dean to the 15 but a penalty took it back to the 30. Then mixing it up with a pass here and a run there, it was Dean who traversed the last ten yards for the touchdown. With Domico in the groove, it went to 24-10 for Neshaminy. With Abington still not finding its groove, another three and out resulted in a punt. And although the Redskins looked solidly in control as the third-quarter ended, Abington caught a break when the wet ball slipped free from Neshaminy with a Ghost recovering it at mid-field. Finally putting something together, Abington roped together a drive that found the end zone with some strong help from a Neshaminy personal foul. As the conversion was good, it went to 24-17 as the game had obviously tightened up. Following the kick, it was then back to the Skins as they set up on their own 22. Beginning from that spot, the Blue and Red started to weave their way down the field before stalling out in Ghost territory. Punting on fourth down, the ball found the back ten and then came back out to the twenty where it was first and ten Abington with two minutes to go. From there Abington punched it out to the 36 before going to a fourth and five. With the desperation pass falling incomplete, the pigskin went back to the Blue and Red as the clock was burned out by the Neshaminy offense. And so with no complaints from our end, here it comes: Game to Skins! Way to go Neshaminy and a sixteen-gun salute to the Ghosts too for another great game between these two squads. And now with the field in District One down to eight in the 4A level, and around the state to just 32 schools in all, our guys can begin to focus in on the immediate task at hand: Old friend and rival - the North Penn Knights. For with their win over the Indians of Council Rock North tonight, the Lansdale based club moves on to the quarterfinals next week too. But with North Penn s number one seed, the Skins will be taking to the road for this one as Heartbreak Ridge has now enjoyed its last game of the 2009 season. On a closing note, and knowing the Blue Knight program like we do, there s not much to say except that it s time to buckle up the bonnets and get in the old three-point stance as North Penn always means business. Course, when it s our Skins on the other side of the line of scrimmage, the books are often thrown out the window -- so get on the road early next week, as it s sure to be a packed house for this donnybrook. *Taken from Neshaminyfootball.com For more stats and facts head over to Neshaminyfootball.com

November 6th, 2009 Neshaminy - 20Pennsbury - 27 Overtime sees `Skins edged by Falcons It s been eighty seasons since the Skins and Falcons first lined up in 1930. And reviewing the series revealed that before kickoff, seventy-seven games were in the books with the overall record all knotted up at 35-35-7! Wow - does this ever get old? Nah, it sure doesn t, not at all. Plus this evening s tangle at Falcon Field was anticipated to be another terrific match-up between the two Lower Bucks County next door neighbors. With both squads at 8-1, and the SOL-National Conference title on the line along with all-important District One playoff seeding , is there anything else that needs be said? Well, there might be one more thing bragging rights for another year were also up for grabs. So as it s not necessary to write another word - except that the SRO crowd in Fairless Hills couldn t have had a more cooperative Mother Nature as she provided crisp air, no rain at all and just a bit of a breeze making for perfect football weather - let s get right to it. With the Falcons winning the toss and electing to receive, they opened up that first series on their own 35. And although starting it off with a very nice clock eating drive, that effort eventually stalled and Pennsbury was forced to punt. Then on one that might have been better let go, Bryan Dean stepped up to make the return at the ten. With a Falcon right in on him, the ball came loose on the hit with Pennsbury recovering. Shortly thereafter it was the home team then up, 7-0. But looking to make up for it in a hurry, it was Dean who returned the following kickoff to the Orange and Black 34 where the Neshaminy offense took over. From there, and although they pushed it inside the ten, the Skins couldn t put it away and the 31-yard field goal attempt was botched when the snap went awry. And with that the ball went back to the Falcons at their 33. Moving to the second period, Pennsbury had it down inside the five-yard line in what seemed like no time at all. But with the hitting on the field as crisp as the night air, a Pennsbury back lost the ball at the one where Neshaminy recovered. And then with back-to-back personal fouls against the Falcons, the Redmen were at the 31 after the penalties were added in. Not getting a first, though, Neshaminy was forced to punt with Pennsbury back in business on its own 38 after the exchange. And showing their stuff, Pennsbury moved it right back down the field helped by a nice quarterback draw for some big yardage. Punching in another one, the PAT was on the money too and it was Pennsbury out in front, 14-0 with just over five minutes left in the half. After the kickoff, it was the Schmidtmen starting it off at their own 20 and looking to get something going. Looking good too, they had it out to the 35 in a hurry but that s where the Blue and Red offense came up a cropper yet again. Forced to punt, it was Brian Reice putting his toe into as it rolled to the Pennsbury 16 where the hosts took over with a few minutes left on the clock. With the two teams thinking the locker room was a good idea, it wasn t much longer before the gun sounded to signal the break with no further scoring. Heading back out for the second-half, it was Neshaminy s opportunity to receive the kickoff. And the timing couldn t have been better as Langhorne needed to get on the stick and start making some noise. With Ricky Williams taking the grab, it was the Skins starting off on their own 25. But Pennsbury s defense said no dice and the Redmen punted; however, the Creek Kids caught a break when the Falcon return man fumbled with Neshaminy's Brian Rugghia covering it at mid-field. Capitalizing on the break, Dean had it at the Falcons 36 in two plays. From there a pass to Williams and run by Corey Majors put it on the 18 in a hurry. Going to fourth down, it was Majors making the first down at the one-yard line with Dean ramming it in from there. With Ricky Domico putting the PAT down the middle, it tightened up to 14-7. Following a nice kickoff return, the Falcons were set up at Neshaminy s 49. And with the Tribe s defense stiffening, it went to fourth down at the 40 before the Falcons drew an offsides penalty on a jumpy Langhorne lineman for a first at the Skins 35. Then a nice Black and Orange pass had Pennsbury knocking at the door inside the ten. A few plays later they just slipped it in but with the PAT missing, the scoreboard read only 20-7. On the ensuing kickoff a fantastic Redskin return saw the Pennsbury kicker save a score when Williams was finally forced out at the Pennsbury 30. Two plays later saw the fourth period roll around with Neshaminy stuck in low gear after a sack on Charlie Marterella left our guys at 3rd and 21. Then after changing sides, a Marterella throw to Frank Csaszar resulted in a pass interference call giving Neshaminy a first down at the Fairless Hills 26 yard line. What followed was a little of this and a little of that all topped off by a three-yard scoot by Dean which made it 20-13. Domico then finished it off with his toe as the score went to 20-14 with nine minutes on the clock. After the short pooch kickoff, Pennsbury started that next possession at their own 35 but soon stalled at the 50. The punt that followed had Neshaminy pinned at the 15 but not for long as Brian Titus immediately found Williams all alone as he took it 85 yards for a score. Domico s PAT was short after a penalty moved the team back and the game was then locked up at 20-20 with 6:27 remaining. Kicking it away, a sloppy bit of ball handling almost saw the rock go to the Skins but a Falcon covered it at the twenty for a first and ten. And this time it was Neshaminy s defense saying no dice and after the Falcon punt, it was the Skins with the ball at their own 49 with 4:19 to go. Not being able to move it past the 45, though, Neshaminy kicked it this time and it was soon Pennsbury starting at their own twenty with 2:40 remaining after the Reice kick found the end zone. That Falcon drive was also doomed to failure and after the punt it was Neshaminy with the ball once again at mid-field with just 1:06 on the clock. A nice hook-and-ladder saw Dean rumble to the 30 as Majors followed that up with a ten-yard punch to take it to the 18-yard stripe with 41 seconds still to go. But not able to cover the last few yards, a Domico 35-yard field goal attempt came up short as the game then went to overtime. With Pennsbury winning the toss and starting it off on the ten-yard line, they earned their TD after two Neshaminy personal fouls helped the Falcon cause. As the PAT was true, it then went to 27-20 for the Fairless Hills crew. With Neshaminy next up at the ten, it quickly went to 4th and goal to go at the five as a Marterella pass was then knocked away to end the game. But what a game it was as both Neshaminy and Pennsbury left it all on the field with the fans that had made the trek treated to a monster example of scholastic football at its finest. So right here and right now a salute to the Blue and Red and the Orange and Black for delivering the goods just as promised. As to our boys, finishing the season at 8-2, they can now turn their focus to the second season: The playoffs. And even though tonight s ding wasn t the ending any of Neshaminy s loyal fans and followers wanted, next week will see our guys dressed in home team red as Round One of the District One championship series gets underway at Heartbreak Ridge. So let s all take a deep breath and shake this one off for just as one door closes, another always opens. *taken from Neshaminyfootball.com For more stats and facts head over to Neshaminyfootball.com
