Life for a Child film debuted at Tribeca festival, named Best Documentary Short at Cinequest NEW YORK - The award-winning documentary Life for a Child will make its world television debut on the Sundance Channel on World Diabetes Day - Nov. 14, 2009, at 8 p.m. EST/PST. Directed by Academy Award(R) nominee Edward Lachman, the film follows the journeys of children with type 1 diabetes amid the verdant mountains and swarming streets of Nepal, one the world's poorest countries. The children are supported with life-saving medication and care by the International Diabetes Federation's (IDF) Life for a Child Program. The Life for a Child film was produced by IDF, the world's leading diabetes advocacy organization, and Eli Lilly and Company, a global leader in diabetes treatment, to raise awareness of the devastating impact of diabetes and increase support for the Life for a Child Program. It will be presented in association with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the world's largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. Life for a Child premiered in competition at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York in April 2008 and made its European Premiere at the Vienna International Film Festival in the fall of 2008. In March 2009, it was honored as Best Documentary Short at the Cinequest Film Festival in California, and has been screened in more than a dozen countries and six festivals. One of the world's most celebrated cinematographers, Lachman was nominated for an Oscar for cinematography in 2003 for Far From Heaven with Julianne Moore, and has photographed dozens of studio and independent features and documentaries, including Erin Brockovich, A Prairie Home Companion and a historic documentary on Mother Theresa. "I wanted to tell the stories of families who are dealing with the daily struggles of life but then also have to deal with the challenges of diabetes," said Lachman, who directed Life for a Child following work on the critically-acclaimed 2007 feature film I'm Not There, starring Cate Blanchett and Heath Ledger. Produced for Eli Lilly and Company

Volunteer Abroad in Vietnam: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteer Abroad in Vietnam: Vietnam shares borders to the north with the People s Republic of China and to the west with Laos and Cambodia. The South China Sea lies to the east and south. The land is principally agricultural with a central tropical rainforest.Vietnam will forever be associated with the horrors of war, and images of verdant patchworks of rice paddies, pointed lampshade-style hats, and economic repression. But there are other scenes to be found, ones of natural beauty, ethnic culture, and imperial history, of timeless traditional villages, idyllic sea resorts and dynamic cities. The magnificent scenery and colorful hill tribes, floating markets of the Mekong Delta, and miles of white sandy beaches, draw thousands of visitors to Vietnam each year. The country has a vibrant legacy from different cultures evident in the character of its towns, as well as in the architecture and food. Despite recent economic gains, Vietnam remains a low-income country. A significant proportion of Vietnamese people live just above the poverty line. More than three quarters of the population, and 90 per cent of poor people overall, live in rural areas, mainly near river deltas. Almost 80 per cent of the country's poor people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of the Vietnam. Volunteering while traveling in Vietnam is a way to totally immerse yourself in the local culture. Volunteering in Vietnam provides a great opportunity to make life-long friends, learn a new culture from the inside out and discover that one person really can make a difference. Volunteer Abroad in Honduras: La Ceiba Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteer Abroad in Honduras: Our programs in Honduras offer an unparalleled opportunity to discover one of the most captivating lands of Central America. Honduras is a safe, democratic country bordering the Caribbean Sea on the north coast and the Pacific Ocean on the south. In Honduras volunteers have a chance to see ancient ruins from the Mayan Empire and explore the limitless eco-trips available from white water rafting to rain forest zip line adventures. The country is an ecological wonder; covered in rain forests, cloud forests, mangroves and thick lush mountain ranges with pine and oak trees. For all its natural beauty, Honduras is one of the 10 poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with almost 50% of the population living below the poverty line. Recent years has seen a growing interest in ecotourism, especially along the coast, which is helping to boost some of the local economy. Volunteering in Honduras will provide you the chance of a lifetime to explore this mysterious country while giving back to the community. The Honduran people are known for their energetic attitude, love of festivals and colorful celebrations, folklore beliefs and the extensive use of coconut, in both sweet and savory foods, and even in soups. The Honduran culture is a blend of Latin America and a multi-ethnic blend of Mestizo, Amerindian, Black and Caucasian. This mix of people influences all aspects of the culture each bringing a unique blend to society. Our volunteer projects allow you to support the local children, at orphanages and primary schools, and work in a local hospital, HIV clinic or both. Volunteer Abroad in Chile: Volunteering OpportunitiesVolunteering Abroad in Chile: Chile, the longest country in the World, claims almost 3000 miles of the Pacific shoreline. This is a land of contrasts and extremes; with glacial landscapes of Patagonia in the south and the heat of the famously dry Atacama Desert in the north. Running almost the entire length of the country are the impressive peaks of the Andes mountain chain which are visible from many towns and cities. Since Chile is one of the narrowest countries - only about 125 miles at its widest point, the sea and the mountains are never more than about two to three hours apart, anywhere in the country. Chile's striking natural wonders, its rich cultural history, friendly people and security make it an ideal volunteer location. Chile has seen many changes in the past 25 years, now boasting one of the most stable economies in South America. Though Chile's economy appears to be the fastest growing economies in the region, Chile suffers from one of the most uneven distributions of wealth in the world. There are estimates that almost 60% of Chileans live near or below poverty levels, with almost 3 million living in extreme poverty. Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Chile. Volunteering in Chile is a way to totally immerse yourself in Spanish culture. This is a great opportunity to make life-long friends, learn a foreign language and discover that one person really can make a difference. Volunteering with us and see A Broader View of the World.
