The Poetics of Great Lyrics

from KUOW Presents Podcast on October 24, 2009

Most song lyrics fall flat without the music to prop them up. But Karen Finneyfrock believes that some songs have lyrics so well written that they can stand on their own as poetry. Karen is a poet and writer in residence at Seattle's Richard Hugo House. Today, she shares three songs that infuse poetry into our daily lives.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen, Norway

from Tweet your city :: www.CheckMyCity.com :: worldwide video travel community on October 06, 2009
Duration: 286
Bergen is the second largest city in Norway. Founded around 1070 AD, Bergen quickly evolved into one of the most important cities in Norway. It was the country's administrative capital from the early 1200s until 1299, and the largest city in Scandinavia. Bergen was one of the most important bureau cities of the Hanseatic League, interconnecting continental Europe with the northern and coastal parts of Norway, thus becoming a central spot for the vending of stockfish and the commercial hot spot in Norway. It was the largest city in Norway until the 1830's and has a long maritime history in shipping and finance. The city still has relics of its Hanseatic heyday, most notably the old harbor of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bergen has been ravaged by several fires; the most recent major fire took place in 1917, a fire which destroyed most of the buildings in what is today the central parts of the city center, centered around the large square Torgallmenningen. Bergen is located far west in Norway, sheltered from the North Sea only by a number of islands. It is situated along latitude 60 degrees north, as Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg and Anchorage. The city is the most hilly and mountainous in Norway. The city center is surrounded by a group of mountains and peaks known as the Seven Mountains, a defining characteristic which has given the city its name. The geographic conditions of the city are very visible; limited space to build on made it necessary in the 19th century that new city blocks be built on the steep slopes of mount Fløyen. Except for the dense city center, which made up the entire city before 1916, Bergen is the least dense of the four largest cities in Norway. Most of the settlement inside the very wide city borders is concentrated in the western part of the municipality. The rest of the municipality is made up of mountains, as well as some farmland and smaller settlements. Bergen is one of the most important cultural centers in Norway. The city is the home of the Bergen International Festival, Nattjazz and Bergenfest, festivals of international renown within their genres. The local symphony orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, was founded in 1786. It is one of the world's oldest orchestral institutions. Bergen was the home of Norway's great composer, Edvard Grieg. Henrik Ibsen, the famous playwright, started his career in Bergen as the manager of the Norwegian theater. Around 2000, a number of artists from the rhythmic music scene in Bergen gained international fame. In the domestic press, this became known as the Bergen Wave. Musicians and bands with roots in Bergen include: Annie, Burzum, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Erlend Øye, Kings of Convenience, Röyksopp, Sondre Lerche, and Datarock. Recent years, the people behind the Bergenfest festival have been hosting concerts the rest of the year. International artists who have visited Bergen include Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Black Sabbath, P!nk, Amy Winehouse, Dolly Parton, Iron Maiden, Anastacia, Roger Waters, Snoop Dogg, Rufus Wainwright, Metallica, Kiss, Foo Fighters, Eric Clapton, R. E. M. and Neil Young. In summer 2009, Bergen will be visited by Coldplay, Depeche Mode and Eagles.

If it keeps on rainin , levee s goin to break, If it keeps on rainin , levee s goin to break, When The Levee Breaks I ll have no place to stay. When it came to hurricane provisions I was always one of those people who chuckled at the sight of watching shoppers fill their carts with water and canned goods.  It would never happen here right? Those people were just paranoid, buying up all the water and making the lines at the gas stations too long at every mention of a hurricane. Then along comes Katrina. Neil Young - No Wonder

Neil Young - No Wonder

from Favorites of Africanbusker on July 04, 2009

From the Jonathan Demme directed Heart of Gold (2006), a filmed live debut of Neil Young's Prairie Wind album (2005) at the Nashville's fabled Ryman Auditorium. Nice slide action on this one, and some signature Young-style guitar picking. See the bluebird fly easy as a dream Dipping and bobbing in the sun Could she be the one I saw so long ago Could she be the one to take me home This pasture is green I'm walking in the sun It's turning brown I'm standing in the rain My overcoat is worn The pockets are all torn I'm moving away from the pain Tick-tock The clock on the wall No wonder we're losing time Ring, ring The old church bell The bride and her love Seeking guidance from above Amber waves of grain bow in the prairie wind I'm hearing Willie singing on the radio again That song from 9/11 keeps ringing in my head I'll always remember something Chris Rock said Don't send no more candles No matter what you do Then Willie stopped singing And the prairie wind blew The green kept rolling on For miles and miles Fields of fuel rolling on for miles Tick-tock The clock on the wall No wonder we're losing time Toll, toll The fallen soldier bell The old church on the hill Still standing when so many fell Back when I was young, the birds blocked out the sun Before the great migration south We only shot a few They last the winter through Mother cooked them good and served them up Somewhere a senator sits in a leather chair Behind a big wooden desk The caribou we killed mean nothing to him He took his money just like all the rest Tick-tock The clock on the wall No wonder we're losing time Ring, ring Ring the wedding bells The bride takes the ring And the happy people sing

BRANDY by the Greenhouse Effect is One of the biggest songs World Wide on the internet in 2008. And 2009 Looks to be even bigger for the band that 'smells like' the next big 'thang' of the World !! ..Certainly, the Internet Universe has gobbled up G.e. and made Hagins and his songwriting exploits one of alternative 'emo' rocks most celebrated and new Pop indie music sensations of the college rock circuit !! and a household name ! - to ANYONE WHO OWNS A COMPUTER....this internet guru marketing genius says that his music is his key and not his ability to 'network' all across the net ,..and particularly on Myspace and Youtube... So what does Clark hagins think of Hip Hop artist who casually use his name and the project by Asher Roth "The Greenhouse Effect mixtape"; ?? Says Haggins; "You know rock n roll is hard work,...we in rock - we worshop people like Pete Townshend of the Who and Kieth Moon,...and Jimmy Page and Zeppelin and David Bowie,..real musicians that get all sweaty working hard and playing 'real' instruments like our rock n roll hero's - people like Jimi hendrix,....you know man,..we do not take kindly to people speaking into a mic and talking over some pre-fab electronic beat about crack and nonsense ! I am a real musician - a drummer and guitarist - who very complicatedly multitracks and overdubs instruments,...most of the whole music world fucking respects my fucking ass ya know,..i'm 43 years old and i remember the Yardbirds, and the Turtles, and the Monkees and KRTH 101 IN LOS ANGELES,...I'M A FUCKING MAN HERE !! I MAKE MY MUSIC AND FUCKING PEOPLE KNOW IT ...and they back up on away from me where ever i go now,..they don't dare talk shit anymore about the fucking guy with 60,000,000 views on google and millions of downloads of 'Brandy' and 'White Black',...i'm a fucking songwriter who plays real instruments - and i got no respect --NO FUCKING RESPECT AT ALL FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T !! SOMEONE WHO JUST YELLS INTO A MICROPHONE ABOUT HOW MISERABLE THEY ARE OR HOW FUN IT IS TO BE DUMB or how supposedly bad that their neighborhood is,...well,..THEY FUCKING DON'T KNOW SHIT; THEY NEED TO COME TO 251 AND MEET DOUG AND JEFF !! THEN,..THEY WILL KNOW REAL FEAR - THEY NEED TO SEE MY CHILDHOOD,..AND SEE HOW LONG ITS FUCKING TAKEN ME TO GET ANYWHERE IN THIS WORLD ...NOBODY FUCKIN' EVER LISTENED TO ME BEFORE MAN,..but they are listening to me now !! i think that the guy Asher Roth is actually ripping off the name from that 'other' hip hop act outta Ohio, man !! he's raggin' on THEM - NOT EVEN ME - AND THATS WHATS SO FUNNY ...I GOT REAL TALENT AND RAP MUSICIANS GOT NONE !! THATS THE BOTTOM LINE HERE,...me and great people like Phil Keegan who work hard to get to the top of the internet for success,..yeah,...we think that rap thing is a piece of worthless shit !! FUCK THAT !! WE WRITE REAL SONGS,..WITH REAL FEELINGS,..REAL EMOTION,..AND FROM REAL FUCKING LIFE EXPERIENCE OF SUFFERING MAN ,..WE'VE WATCHED PEOPLE DIE OF fucking CANCER N SHIT -...we ain't gonna take this ,..and we've been called Greenhouse Effect since FUCKING 1985 !! FUCK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY - THEY STEAL NAMES, THEY STEAL STYLES, THEY STEAL IMAGES, THEY EVEN FUCKING STEAL YER SONG - AS FLIPPER WOULD SAY !!,,,and I can't believe that the music industry or the devil or who ever the fuck it is wants to keep fucking with me ?? You would have thought that Kurt Cobain laying dead in THAT GREENHOUSE woulda' got the fuckin' message into their heads by now...DON'T FUCKING USE CLARK'S IDEAS !! ANYMORE !! YOU FUCKS !!
