Today, let's talk about Nintendo, shall we? My childhood was based around Nintendo and their games. I loved them. Sega and Sony stood no chance of taking me away from them, as I was too big a fan of Zelda and Mario and all those franchises Nintendo had. I played Donkey Kong Country and it's sequels so many times, it's ridiculous. That and Super Mario RPG, StarFox 64, Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie... The list goes on. I was always excited when they announced a new game because I knew it would be great when I bought it. However... Something started to... change within Nintendo after the N64. The Gamecube launch title was Luigi's Mansion, which wasn't quite as good as Super Mario World or Super Mario 64. I figured this was just a little bump in the road, and for the most part, I was right. We had some great games for a few years. Then, Nintendo did something strange and unexpected: The sold RareWare to Microsoft. This was a big shock to me, as I was a huge Rare fan at the time and the future of the DK and B-K series looked bleak. I just couldn't understand why they would sell their biggest developer on a whim. But, I still trusted their judgment. After a few years, the Gamecube started getting less and less games. To the point that I stopped playing games completely for months. But, like a shining beacon in the darkness, the Nintendo Revolution was announced. It was going to be amazing: backwards compatibility with all Nintendo consoles, new original ideas were rumored to be in the works, and we were promised the best console ever. I was so happy. After months of waiting, we were finally introduced to the name 'Wii'. I was kind of shocked. I surely didn't like the name, but I didn't really mind. A few months later, however, we finally got to see the Wii's controller... It was a remote control with a nunchuk attached. I was very upset about this. I thought that Nintendo had lost their minds, making this monstrosity. It seemed like we Nintendo fans were going to have to find a new system to buy, because Nintendo had lost it. But, they told us about how truly innovative the controls could be by showing us demos of new, beautiful Mario and Metroid games. I was sold. It seemed Nintendo had hundreds of great games lined up. Sadly, none of these games were quite the same. Using the Wii Remote instead of the Gamecube controller was more of a gimmicky hindrance than a new way to play. While swinging a remote may be more akin to swinging a sword than pressing a button, the loss of precision in the process made the controls a convoluted mess. Many fans were disappointed in this new setup and begged for Gamecube controller support for these games, but were ignored. Needless to say, I was starting to feel less entertained by the Wii than any other Nintendo console. Yet the Wii was and remains the top-selling console in the world. How can this possibly be? Nintendo hasn't made an experience on Wii worth buying, yet it sells more than any other system. It's the casual game market. Recently at E3 2008, Shigeru Miyamoto, mastermind behind Mario and Zelda announced how Zelda needs to be MORE focused on a casual audience than what Twilight Princess was. The same Twilight Princess that felt awkward and broken because of the forced 'appeal' to the casual audience. This is what has started the end of video games as we know them. Nintendo doesn't NEED to make new, truly innovative ideas anymore. Not when they can make a minigame collection like Wii Sports and make triple the income. The recent sucess of 'casual' games has made it's way to other consoles now as well, soon to fill their libraries with minigame shovelware which will outsell the actual GAMES of the systems. Just look at the Fall '08 Xbox Dashboard update. It's the Wii Menu with these oh-so-original 'avatars'. No gamer liked the Miis on Wii. Why would we want them on the 360? Sony's HOME is very similar as well, just not as cartoonish. I no longer support Nintendo by buying their minigames and neither should any person who likes video games. I do support them in spirit, however, because I know deep-down, they want to make real games again someday. I just hope that day comes before it's too late for the industry... and my childhood friends, Mario and Link.
