Don't put your lives in the hands of the KMTDon't put your lives in the hands of the KMT

July 20, 2008

Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) (Chinese Nationalist Party [KMT]) has been Taiwan's president since May 20, 2008, and he's making the so-called "incompetence" of his predecessor Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) look like OMNIpotence. In the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi (卡玫基颱風), the Ma administration put a half-page ad in the China Times (中國時報) and United Daily News (聯合報) listing phone numbers that people could call if they needed help. The ad said 「你馬上打來,我們馬上救你」 ("if you call right away, you'll be rescued right away"). A reporter from SET News (三立新聞) found that some of these numbers just rang and rang, others led to recordings saying to "call back during regular office hours," and still others were busy and couldnt be accessed even after dialing for half an hour. After the recent earthquake in Sichuan Province, China (a whole other country!), Ma and his wife operated the phones in order to raise donations for the victims of that disaster. After Kalmaegi, dedicated phone lines should have been set up to handle the *domestic* emergencies, but people who needed help were left to fend for themselves. People have fallen through damaged bridges, been washed away by raging rivers, been buried in mudslides, and have suffered many more tragedies. Ma's biggest campaign slogans were 「馬上就會好」 ("Things will get better right away when Ma becomes president") and 「我們準備好了!」 ("We are ready!"), so his more recent ironic statements about 「苦民所苦」 ("I feel the people's pain") should fall on deaf ears as once again, the words of Ma and his administration have been proven to be utter bullshit. The Saturday, July 19, 2008 edition of Talking Show (大話新聞) told viewers about the latest madness from the mis-administration of "Mr." Ma Ying-jeou. Don't fall for the KMT's empty promises, and don't put your lives in their hands. Subscribe My Videos. Most of us have seen, or at least heard of, that HBO documentary on Little Rock's gang problem. Believe it or not, it was nearly 10 years ago when that documentary aired. It was a time when the city's rival gangs were literally at war. A lot has happened in the past ten years. Some of the gangsters featured in the special are dead. Some of them are in prison. But one of them took his experience as a gang leader and turned his life around. Now, to the surprise of many, he's paying back his community and influencing scores of young lives. This time, for the better. During the last half of the 1994 HBO documentary Bangin' In Little Rock, focus turned to a man named O.G.Jackson. O.G., which stands for original gangster, was responsible for a large faction of local crips. Crips are one of a handful of gangs documented in the HBO special. O.G. also ran one of the state's largest drug rings. Just after the documentary aired, he spent nearly a decade in prison. He got out of prison in November of 2000. Today, he is living proof that there is life after gangs. "Some people are led wrong, and they do wrong, and they just don't understand." Today, he no longer answers to O.G., but to Mister Leifel, his real first name. His message is not one of retaliation, but one of peace, love and hope. His followers now aren't gangsters, but at-risk youth at Our Club in North Little Rock. Kids who need structure, love and support. "I used to be one of the most feared gang members in this whole state." Mister Leifel has the full attention of the young children he works with. "What happens if you have a brother, uncle in gangs that don't believe they can get out, what would you tell them now?" he asks. "I would tell them that there is a way to get out and it's not just by losing your life or going to jail. It's a different way to get out so don't believe that you can't get out." one small child answers. Leifel says he's not proud of what he did when he was a gangster. "I would go to shoot someone, steal something, take something from someone from another community. That was all part of getting some stripes." He says shooting someone was just a part of the life he lived back then. He says it's something he has to deal with everyday. But he also says he believes things happen for a reason, and that reason is for him now to be here with his kids and the kids in his program. He believes he went through all he did, so he could now help steer kids away from a life of drugs and gangs. Leifel says even before he went to prison, his life started coming down around him. "I was realizing that I really had no power. That the drugs that I was selling I was selling to the people I professed that I loved. So I guess I was Killing the people I loved." That's when he traded his bandana for freedom and a life of helping others, especially the children whose eyes and ears hold this former gangster to the truest test. In 1994 there was a war raging in Little Rock Arkansas, a town where the homicide rate was higher than in both New York and Los Angeles. Chronicles the lives of rival Gang Members. Allowed unprecedented access to this culture, the Producers of Gang War offer an unflinching look at big city gangs like the Bloods, Crips, Folk, Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples coming to middle America.
