Letterboxing in the Northwest and Giving up Stardom to Build ViolinsLetterboxing in the Northwest and Giving up Stardom to Build Violins
from Sound Focus Podcast
July 17, 2008

When Amanda Arkebauer was a kid, she devoured Nancy Drew novels. Now, she collects clues from the Internet to uncover hidden boxes all over the Northwest. It's a pastime called letterboxing. We also ask a former vocalist from the band Velvet Underground why building violins in Ballard is more satisfying than being a rock star.

Filed under: Fandom, Home Entertainment, Cinematical Seven, Lists With Kit Kittredge: An American Girl finally opening in limited release on Wednesday, it seemed like a good time to take a look at other films girls in the same age demographic might also enjoy. As a mother of three daughters, I like to seek out films that have strong female characters. So many of the roles for females in Hollywood either fall into blatant stereotypes or position young girls and women as existing on this planet primarily for the pleasures of the male half of the species, and I don't want my girls growing up believing the images of women they're exposed to through the media. Of course, everything in life doesn't have to have a political agenda -- what fun would that be? So some of these are just films my own daughters very much enjoy, that the girl in your life might like also. Here are seven great films for fans of American Girl books and movies ... let me know what others I've missed that you like; with only seven slots to work with, I had to leave out a lot of films I otherwise would have included ... Blanche Mehaffey heads the cast as FBI agent Betty Mason. At the risk of her own neck, Betty pursues the kidnappers of a wealthy businessman. She also juggles the affection of her partner Morrison (Jack Mulhall) and the victim's son Scott (Grant Withers). After five yarn-provoking reels, the film finally roars into life with a truly exciting climactic shootout. Though Blanche Mehaffey had been in films since the silent days, she never quite attained stardom, and was still being referred to as an "unknown" by the 1938 trade papers. Despite the description, this is not a bad movie.

The lady of the title is author Dorinda Hatch (Joan Caulfield), who writes a scathing best-seller in which she trashes all men. Photographer Bill Shelby (David Niven) vows to make Dorinda eat her words, thereby proving the superiority of the male of the species. Suffice to say that he doesn't succeed--at least until the very, very end. The middle portion of The Lady Says No consists of a surrealistic dream sequence in which Dorinda realizes that she loves Bill despite his rampant chauvinism. This film is not a likely candidate for screening at the next N.O.W. meeting. Lady Says No was produced and directed by Frank Ross, who at the time was married to star Joan Caulfield. A Boy and His Dog is a short story by Harlan Ellison which was also the basis of a 1974 post-apocalyptic science fiction film of the same name directed by L. Q. Jones. The story was first published in 1969. A revised and expanded version was printed in Ellison's 1976 story collection The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, and Ellison continued the story in the graphic novel Vic and Blood. The film version is often cited as an inspiration for George Miller's Mad Max though Miller has said he didn't view Jones' film until after he had completed his own [citation needed]. The movie was also distributed after the initial run under the name, "Psycho Boy and His Killer Dog" among other titles. This description is from Wikipedia Click here to download The Movie Store
