From New Home Source (http://www.newhomesource.com/): We recently visited the International Builders' Show in Orlando, Florida and talked to the experts about the new NAHB National Green Building Program, the importance of the green building movement, and the impact it's having on the industry. Don Carr, Quality Program Manager, NAHB Research Center: Green building is really an emerging definition of the right way to build. It's a way to build that is properly sensitive to the environment, proper use of good materials, incorporates many of the things that customers want, like energy-efficiency, water-efficiency, low-maintenance, livability, a lot of those kind of features. And so, there's really not a separate distinction between the right way to build and green building, and I think one of the best definitions of that is National Green Building program, which is what NAHB's rolling out. Bill Lurz, Senior Editor, Housing Giants/Professional Builder: Green building is important. It's a way for new home builders to differentiate their product from existing homes. Building green can do that. There are two aspects of that that I think are important. One is energy-efficiency, because the price of oil is going up, and the price of heating and cooling homes is rising. And the other one is indoor air quality. Because a lot of families are concerned about allergy situations with their kids, they're looking to put their kids in an environment that's more advantageous to their health and well-being. Indoor air quality can do that. Brian Binash, President, Wilshire Homes: We think it's the right thing to do. What we have always believed in is that an entire home payment is not just principle, interest, taxes, and insurance, but it's also your utilities. So, if we can save you $50, $100, $200 on your utility bills each and every month, that's real money back in your pocket. Even if you pay off your home, you're still gonna have those utility payments. So being energy-efficient, being utility- and resource-efficient, all has its benefits. Certainly, indoor air quality speaks for itself. As homes become more energy-efficient, they become tighter. We need to be a little more concerned about what the quality of the air is that's inside the home. And obviously being recyclable and resource-efficient and sustainable, we're concerned about the effect that we have on the environment. So, being able to use products in the home that are recycled, for instance, is certainly better for the environment. And it's not just builders. Manufacturers play a major role in the green building process. JB Hoyt, Director, Regulatory Affairs & State Government Relations, Whirlpool: I like to say that Whirlpool's been green before being green was cool. We've been engaged with the energy- and water-efficiency efforts for over 30 years. We were involved in setting the original energy standards in this country. We've been very involved in the Energy Star program, and have been a leader in this field for over 30 years. Whirlpool has over 700 models of Energy Star-qualified products. These are both energy- and water efficient products across all product lines, and the changes in energy efficiency of the years has been pretty dramatic. For example, today's front-load clothes washers use only about 1/4 of the energy and water of the traditional top-loader. Today's dishwashers use about 1/3 of the energy of the dishwashers they would be replacing. And a refrigerator uses no more energy than a 60-watt lightbulb. So it's been some pretty dramatic changes in efficiency over the last several years. Brian Binash, President, Wilshire Homes: If I were a consumer in the marketplace today, certainly I'd be very interested in looking for a new home. I mean, if you look at all the facts such as they are, and you really sit down and you analyze it, there's no better time than to buy right now. And if you're going to buy a home, make sure buy one that's energy-efficient and resource-efficient -- Green.
