Wimbledon 2008 - Top 10 Moments
from YouTube :: Tag // Wimbledon July 08, 2008
The 122nd Championships came to the most magnificent of conclusions in near-darkness on Centre Court as Spain's Rafael Nadal brought the five-time champion Roger Federer crashing to earth in the longest, and quite possibly the finest, men's final in the history of The All England Club. Nadal's 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 victory took 4 hours and 48 minutes of actual playing time but occupied all of the afternoon and most of the evening because of two rain delays. It was the 22-year-old Nadal, rather than Federer, who fell prone on the turf as flash bulbs went off in the gloom, in joyous celebration of capturing the title he has always said means more to him than any other. Nadal is only the second Spaniard, after Manolo Santana in 1966, to become Wimbledon's Gentlemen's Singles Champion, and it was fitting that Santana should witness this historic occasion from the Royal Box. Rafael Nadal Wins Wimbledon 2008 Mens Final!!!
from YouTube :: Tag // lost July 08, 2008
Rafael Nadal Wins Wimbledon 2008 Mens Final!!! Rafael Nadal held off an incredible fightback from Roger Federer to win his first Wimbledon title and end the Swiss star's reign at the All England Club. The Spaniard missed two championship points in the fourth set but recovered to win a dramatic rain-interrupted match 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (8-10) 9-7. The final shot was struck in near darkness on Centre Court at 2115 BST. Nadal, 22, is the the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win back-to-back the French Open and Wimbledon titles. Asked about the moment of victory, Nadal told BBC Sport: "It's impossible to explain what I felt in that moment but I'm very, very happy. "It is a dream to play on this court, my favourite tournament, but to win I never imagined." Federer, who made just one of 14 break points, said: "I tried everything, got a little late, but look, Rafa is a deserving champion, he just played fantastic. "The rain didn't make it easier but you have to expect the worst and he's the worst opponent on the best court. It's a pity I couldn't win it but I'll be back next year." Federer, 26, had been trying to become only the second man to win six consecutive Wimbledon titles, and so surpass Borg to match Willie Renshaw, who played in the 1880s. The defeat brought to an end his unbeaten run of 65 matches on grass, and arguably his reign as the undisputed king of tennis. On sealing victory, a tearful Nadal climbed through the stands to celebrate with his family and supporters before heading to the royal box to speak to members of the Spanish royal family. Federer, meanwhile, suffered the unpleasant experience of watching, dejected, from his chair as he came to terms with finishing runner-up for the first time. It may be little consolation but he played his part in one of the great finals. The pre-match billing had it down as tennis's version of a world heavyweight title fight and it lived up to the hype, Nadal finally winning the longest Wimbledon men's singles final after four hours, 48 minutes. He now adds the Wimbledon crown to the four French Open titles he has won, while Federer will look to defend his one remaining Grand Slam title at the US Open next month. Nadal went into the match as the favourite in some people's eyes, having thrashed Federer in last month's Roland Garros final and with an 11-6 head-to-head record against the Swiss. After a half-hour delay to the start because of rain, the Majorcan made the better start with a break in game three, saving three break points on his way to the first set. The momentum shifted at the start of the second as Federer raced to a 4-1 lead, whipping a vicious cross-court forehand for a winner to finally convert a break point in game two, but Nadal came roaring back with five straight games for a two-set lead. With dark clouds gathering overhead, Federer looked ready to be put out of his misery at 3-3, 0-40, in the third but the champion roused himself superbly, reeling off five straight points and holding serve to lead 5-4 when rain stopped play after two hours and 14 minutes. Play resumed following a break of 80 minutes and when it came down to a tie-break, rejuvenated Federer dominated with some huge forehands and unstoppable serving, sealing it with an ace. The fourth set saw the two players inspired and by the closing stages the enthralled Centre Court crowd were chanting the names of both men. Another tie-break was required to separate the pair - and it was an all-time classic. Federer recovered from 5-2 down only to miss a set point with a wayward forehand. Nadal then lost his first championship point at 7-6 when Federer hit a winning serve, and the Swiss saved a second match point with an outrageous backhand winner. The match was destined for a fifth set, and Federer obliged with a service winner to the delight of an enraptured 15,000 spectators. When the rain returned at 1933 BST with the score at 2-2 in the decider it seemed likely that everyone would be back on Monday, but the shower passed after 50 minutes and battle was rejoined. Despite the gathering gloom, the final set was simply breathtaking. Federer earned a break point in game eight, Nadal two in game 11, but both players remained rock solid under the pressure until they were locked at 7-7. Three more break points were saved by Federer but the champion was rocking, and Nadal finally landed the knockout blow when the world number one was forced into a forehand error. All that remained was for Nadal to serve out for the title and, after Federer saved championship point number three with a rasping backhand, the Spaniard sealed it when the Swiss netted a forehand. Wached by his parents, and coach and uncle, Toni, the 22-year-old fell to the floor before beginning his journey through the stands to celebrate. Rafael Nadal Wins Wimbledon & A-Rod Cheating With Madonna?!? - Sports News On Getthedaily.com
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 07, 2008
getthedaily.com We start today with an update on President Bush s decision to attend the upcoming Olympics opening ceremony. While some European leaders have opted to boycott next month s event, Bush said Sunday that he did not need to miss the Beijing ceremony to show his opinion on religious freedom and human rights in China. Bush also stated that if he were to boycott the Olympics event, it would be more difficult to have talks with the Chinese government. Japan s Prime Minister also said he would attend the opening ceremony. And Wimbledon came to a close Sunday evening. In the final game, the number-2-ranked Rafael Nadal won over the number-1 Roger Federer. 26-year-old Federer was going for a record 6th consecutive championship at the England club since the 1880s, until the 22-year-old Nadal took the victory which marked Spain s first one since 1966. The match was sprinkled with about 2-hours of delays due to rain, and this 4-hour and 48-minute final game was the longest men s final in Wimbledon history. According to several media outlets, Alex Rodriguez s wife plans to file for divorce this week. The reports state that Cynthia Rodriquez wants to separate from the New York Yankees player due to extramarital affairs. This latest divorce news comes days after A-Rod was rumored to have been linked to Madonna as well as the alleged connection between C-Rod and Lenny Kravitz.

Wimbledon 2008 Final - Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
from Most Viewed July 06, 2008
Sorry for the shitty quality, there's no better options. 6/July/2008. This is by FAR the best game of tennis I've ever watched, and one of the best sports matches EVER. The significance of winning the most important Grand Slam wasn't all of it, as Federer was aiming to break Borg's record of 5 straight championships in the All England Club, as well as tying Renshaw's 6 straight championships (though those were easier to get back in the 1800's). Nadal in the other hand was aiming to win his first Grand Slam outside of Roland Garros, and start solidifying as the greatest thing in tennis right now. First set: Nadal starts controlling Federer and breaks him early to hold on 6-4. Second set: Federer breaks Nadal early and finds himself 4-2 on top, but Nadal fights back and breaks Federer twice to take the set 6-4. Third set: All the pressure was now on Federer, who had never recovered from a two-set deficit in Wimbledon. At 5-4 in favor of Federer, the game was delayed more than an hour because of rain, and after returning, Federer won a tiebreaker to make it 7-6 in the third. Fourth set: Nadal was starting to feel the pressure, and again, in a tiebreaker, Federer fought off after falling 5-2 to win 10-8, one of the craziest tiebreakers I've ever seen. Fifth set: Everything seemed like Federer would get his sixth straight crown, and at 2-2 the rain delayed the game again. Coming back, they continued to defend their service with ease, and went on to 7-7. Nadal finally broke Federer's service and after adding a little suspense with a deuce in the next game, he managed to pull it out and win 9-7 the fifth set and the match. So in the end the score was 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7. This was the longest Wimbledon final ever, taking 4 hours and 48 minutes to finish, plus more than two hours of rain delays, taking into account the delay before the game, for a total of over 7 hours of intrigue. Nadal is now the champion, and first since Borg in 1980 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. Now there's an open road ahead for Nadal to become number one, a new seed has been planted at Wimbledon's sacred grass....

9-7: Greatest Ever Triumph (Nadal Beats Federer, Wimbledon)
from Top Rated July 06, 2008
He's still the number one. He's still the best. He's still the five-time champion here. Right now I have just one -- Rafael Nadal on beating Roger Federer, 9-7 in the fifth, at Wimbledon on Sunday July 6, 2008. What he considers to be his greatest ever triumph, many commentators and former titleholders alike are comfortably describing as the greatest tennis match in history. This is dedicated to one of the most outstanding sportsmen in history, and to his honorable victory 22 years in the making. Music: Cinque's Theme by John Williams, from the movie Amistad (2000). Quotes: I have just witnessed the greatest match I have ever seen. The drama, the quality and the way it ended when it seemed as though no more tennis could possibly be played was remarkable, to put it mildly. - John McEnroe, former world number one It was the best match I've ever seen. I know John McEnroe said that, and I have to agree with him. - Rod Laver, former world number one Nadal's win is the best match I've ever seen. - Tim Henman, former British number one This was the greatest tennis match of all time. - Hugh MacDonald, chief sportswriter for The Herald It was the greatest match I have personally ever seen in 30 odd years of reporting tennis around this wonderful world. - Gerry Williams, sportswriter for Sky News It's not for me to say whether it was the greatest match played at Wimbledon or anywhere else ... but I will say that I was proud to play in such a match and that Rafa played so well. - Federer, current world number one It's my most emotional win and probably the best [that I've ever played]. - Nadal, future world number one HONORS FOR THIS VIDEO #6 - Most Discussed (Today) - Sports - Australia #48 - Most Discussed (This Week) - Sports - Australia #72 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Germany #49 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Australia #59 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Canada #48 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - United Kingdom #30 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Ireland #31 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - India #84 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - New Zealand #59 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Global #39 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Spain #73 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - France #80 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Italy #79 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - South Korea #60 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Netherlands #47 - Most Viewed (Today) - Sports - Hong Kong #11 - Top Favorites (Today) - Australia #2 - Top Favorites (Today) - Sports - Australia #46 - Top Favorites (Today) - Sports - Global #30 - Top Favorites (This Week) - Sports - Australia #20 - Top Rated (Today) - Australia #1 - Top Rated (Today) - Sports - Australia #29 - Top Rated (Today) - Sports - Global #2 - Top Rated (This Week) - Sports - Australia #80 - Top Rated (This Month) - Sports - Australia
